We all recoil at the thought of a young sportsman or woman cut down in their prime. But a whole team of them? It hardly bears thinking about. One of sport's great tragedies. RIP lads.

I'm 35 and obviously wasn't even a glint in my dad's eye.

But in the years before he died he showed me that before anything else we are human beings.

Tragedies, whoever they affect directly should affect us all.

As I always have known and believed, top quality respect and top class recognition from the REAL football fans who support - and with much justification - our greatest club rivals in the English game. A very much appreciated Thank-you from this long-time United follower.
There is nothing wrong with striving to win, so long as you don't set the prize above the game. There can be no dishonour in defeat nor any conceit in victory. What matters above all is that the team plays in the right spirit, with skill, courage, fair play,no favour and the result accepted without bitterness. Sir Matt Busby CBE KCSG 1909-1994

Don't mention it Johnno. Football rivalry doesn't even come into it when the loss of human life is involved.

I know this mate but still, it always is nice to see pure decency and humanity surface above tribal rivalries. We both of us know this is not very sadly, always the case.

Thank you all for your kind words

There are some other things that happened over Munich that fans of both clubs would do well to remember

After the crash Liverpool were the first ones to ask us "What can we do to help?" In fact you offered us the pick of your reserve team

Bill Shankly, who was at Huddersfield at the time went to Munich to visit Matt Busby in hospital, apart from his immediate family Shanks was the only one to do so

That's why you will never hear us older United fans put you down, we'll laugh and take the Micheal when you lose to us, or accept it when you win, but deep down there is a fond memory and respect for you,

But again thank you - somethings are bigger than rivalry

I must have missed your post mate - when I joined RAWK. Just browsing and doing a Feb 6th catch-up. Very nice and simple thank-you posting mate. From one old United fan to another, all credit to you for making it.

Fantastic piece to read, that.

I didn't know largely anything about the facts involved in the munich disaster.

Both Liverpool and Manchester have many similarities in both the city, the people and its football. Maybe it's the similarities that breed the hatred. Hopefully one day, we can get past all the stupidity and appreciate each other and show respect where/when necessary.

Aye bloody hell, can't hardly believe it is 58 years ago. I was just 12 and a bit (New Year's Eve 1945 born) and on my way home from school when I saw the scrawled headlines on little billboards (that used to be outside newspaper shops back then) saying our lads plane had crashed at Munich.

I certainly will never forget Thursday 6th Feb 1958 - burned into my soul.

Sleep in peace all the lost lads - you're remembered for all time.

I wasn't born when it happened, but have seen and read about that awful day. It's beyond the stuff of nightmares, horrendous.
I vividly recall reading of the heroics of Harry Gregg the goalkeeper who pulled survivors from the burning aircraft.

Rivalry goes out the window when we stand together remembering what happened in Munich all those years ago. No real fan, no decent human being can mock such a tragic accident.
