Older places that have gone/changed in Liverpool
« on: December 1, 2015, 12:31:09 pm »
Not sure if we've got an 'older places that have gone/changed in Liverpool' kind of thread..?

Anyway, I'll start the ball rolling with some places of yesteryear..

Secrets in Bootle/Seaforth - used to be off its head. Dancing girls, mad acts.. Great place!
The Kingsman (Southport) - I know it's in Southport, but so many people from Liverpool were there.. Massive club on a few floors. Top place!
Leggs of Mann - brutally kicked down in its prime by the Liverpool Empire :(
Pickwicks - What can you say about this place (Now a car park) - massive, two pubs within the place and loads of dancefloors - mad place. Used to be great.
The Continental - wowzers - great place again.
The State - it was a state as well :)
Sullies in Bootle - where I met my missus (Not the small Sullies one with the upstairs restaurant - the one they built over and beyond the original when it burned down - think it's closed again now..)
Streets - when it used to be proper Streets was a great venue
Chaucers - used to have some great nights in there
Chauffers - round the corner - used to be a laugh
Plummers - what a place that used to be!

Any more for any more?

The Montrose, Whitefield Road
The Grafton, West Derby Road
The Bourne Arms, Boaler Street (pre Grafton stop off)
The Buzz, Skelhorn Street (avoided like the plague)
Cains, Victoria Street (now The Beaconsfield) - used to be a boss pub, not no more!  :(

The Moonstone and the Sportsmen were two pubs in St John's precinct, the Moonstone was a sort of heavy metal place, one thing I can remember about the Sportsman was they had a racing car attached to the ceiling and many a pissed customer would try and get into it. Remember Snobs as well was a decent club in its day and you would see LFC players in there regularly. It was also the club where Souness got filled in by a local hard case and it was in the papers as a "training accident".

What's the pub at the top of Low Hill?  Every time I've gone past there it's always been some half-arsed demolished ruin.
Half of the big houses on Edge Lane as well.

If we're not sticking specifically to pubs, I'd throw in:

The Ace Place.
Hobbies model shop.
194 Radio City. (Stanley Street.)
Las Vegas.
Blacklers.
Woolworths.
The 'Bubbles' bust stops. Roe Street.

All from my childhood, or school days.  ;)

Was the Ace Place the joke shop on Dale Street? I remember that still being around when I was a kid.

The ultimate one for any 90s kids like me is of course Pleasure Island.

Yep I remember it, got taken over by JJB in the end I think. Jack Sharp who founded it was one of those boss old sportsmen who played for Everton and also played for Lancashire at cricket.

The Moonstone and the Sportsmen were two pubs in St John's precinct...

Good grief, I'd forgotten about the Moonstone. My mam was a barmaid there and every Saturday morning, as an 8 year old, I'd go along and sort out the empty bottles into crates. Loads of crisps and lemo, and Don (the manager) would give me enough money to buy an Airfix from Beatties! I'd forgot all about that  :)

that's top of Islington? My Nan and Grandad lived on West Derby Road...Perth St, spent loads of time there, d'y know every street along that section from Islington to Ogdens had a pub on the corner apart from Perth.

When it was all demolished my nans house still stood ( stands!) and they built a Petrol Station ( now gone ) between Perth and the Clock pub...workman saw may grandad ( in his 80's ) walking across the works every day for his pint, so they built him a special path and steps across the station so he wouldn't have to walk around it when open...isn't that great!?

And the furniture shop on West Derby Road that's still standing since the dawn of time!!

Different place the aladdins den , that's j.Wildridges on the corner of lower breck road next to the newsham pub , now sadly closed . The furniture shop was called Brunswick furniture if I recall right owned by a father and son and only just closed dowm .
