I was in the glaziers on Penny Lane this week and they've got some wonderful old pics of Liverpool, most of which have been on here. But there was one of Sefton Park lake with a tall boat hut by the old landing stage. I've never seen it before and was simply amazed by it - if anyone ever locates it please post it on here. Cheers.

That Standish street fire one, looks like that area has all been razed now beyond recognition.

I'm looking at an old street map from the early 60's and Standish Rd ran onto North St but on streetview it no longer does.

The mounted Police escorting a convoy one on 'Dock Road', I can't position at all. It looks like that's the LOH on the right hand side, I can even see a signal box further down, in which case it's not 'Dock road' at all.

Perhaps it's actually Regent road?

Bring back straw boaters I say! :)

Gulley, I think the mounted police one is Sefton St. looking towards Dingle, with Stanhope St. just out of shot on the left.

I've found the armoured car one.

Can't quite line up streetview but it's outside here in Hatton Garden

There's a bit of a history in here
The arrow I think marks the arch that is behind the vehicle in the original.

Tsar Kastik. Surely the last photo of the marchers with the trade union banners has got to be St Georges hall/plateau ?

If you look at those neo classical columns in the background, I can only think of maybe three of four  building in Liverpool(two now gone) that have that design of column, and in such grand dimensions.

Maybe someone else knows more, from historical photo's

St.Georges.
The museum/Library/Walker Art Gallery etc.
The old Cotton exchange(old hall St)
And possibly the old customs house down on the strand.

Edit: Just looked at old photo's of the custom house, and the custom house had smooth coulmns, and not fluted like in the photo.

If you look into the background between those columns, you see a square door.

Here's a picture that I snapped earlier this year on St.Georges plateau, and I reccon that those two photo's are probbably taken from maybe about 20 - 30 yards apart.

In fact, if you think of it, the cenotaph wasn't built untill post WW1, so the actuall photogropher is probably standing on one of the Lion statues on Lime St in order to get a bit of height to take the crowd picture.

Great photos of the strike Tsar Kastic, enjoyed that. Good detective work to find those locations too! I'm drawing a blank as to where the others are from tho', not much to go on.

If you look at the two photo's of the armoured car, I can only deduce that:

On leaving Hatton Garden it's turning left, up towards Tithbarn St, if it was to go around the block, it may well return along Dale st, so at the moment I'm trying to match up an old photo or two with streets in this area.

Can anyone with better eyesight than me pick out the name of the shop in the background of the armoured car and soldiers/armed police pic.

The shop in the background on the left says    ...........TON & Co Liverpool. Or something similar.
You can certainly pick out Liverpool with a column in front of the doorway obscuring the 'IV' in Liverpool.

If you can pick out the name, then do a streets directory again as above, then we may pin it down.

I say!  There's some good old fashioned detective work going on in this here thread, Dr Watson!

Tsar Kastik, where did you get the image of the page of the business directory from ?

The reason I ask is that the top pic of the person burning something in the street, the building in the background looks like it's called Bents stores ?

See if you can pin that one down.

I'm having no luck at all with that.

Here's a really good background to the events in the photo's (these were all taken by a guy called Carbonara)

http://www.btinternet.com/~m.royden/mrlhp/students/transportstrike/transportstrike.htm

Detachments of police and military arrived in the city on 10 August from Leeds, Birmingham, 200 officers from the Royal Irish Constabulary, together with 400 troops from the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, and were greeted with boos and catcalls outside Lime Street Station by thousands of strikers congregated on St. George’s plateau.19 The Lord Mayor asked for additional Police and troops in a telegram to Home Secretary Winston Churchill, and within days extra Police had arrived from Lancashire and Bradford. In addition to the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, extra troops from the Scots Greys, Hussars and The Yorkshire Regiment arrived in the city and were stationed at Seaforth barracks or billeted at Sefton Park.20 In total, an extra 2,400 police and 5,000 troops were in the city.21

Here's another photo of that unrest from Google cache

http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:6XunZEti4nwJ:www.myliverpoolforum.org/viewtopic.php%3Ff%3D38%26t%3D2604%26start%3D0+1911+strike+liverpool+Carbonara&cd=3&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=uk

The poster says it's Church street with Hanover on the left, but I'm really not too convinced.

And here's another of the St Georges hall meeting on the Sunday.

On a slightly different tack, does anyone remember some of these being in shiny polished aluminium/silver, I think we called them Coronations, as they had the royal coat of arms on the side and I think had been specials to mark the Queens Coronation. They also had better upholstery than the normal green ones. Don't think there were many, possibly only a couple, they certainly seemed rare, but I do remember them appearing a few times on the school run back in about 61/62

In my trawlings I've found another site that might be of interest, especially for those of you bought up in Bootle. Don't think it's been posted here yet.

http://www.bootlehistory.co.uk/forum/viewforum.php?f=8

Many, many photo's.

Gulley, just had a quick look in the 1911 directory and at first glance it looks like that !st. one is Church St.
99 Hanover St. was occupied by a company named J.W. Wardle and Co and that looks like what it says over the shop with the sun blinds down.
99 Hanover St. would be around that area (Boots corner).

Don't know why but I think this photo is great, Carter boys of Edge Hill during the 1911 Transport strike, all of them smiling away. I imagine many of them probably got called up by 1917 and that was that.

from here

There some more photo's here

Brilliant shot from I suspect a signal box on the LOHR. If you look under the gantry you can just make out one of the old MD&HB 'Pugs' on the line below.
Also note the 'hardhats' on the LOHR trackmens heads. :)

No. More like exactly.

Those 2 shops just around the corner from Hanover St. - names of 'The Ladies Realm' (named on the sun-blind) and 'Fullers' are on this bit of the 1911 directory Nos. 62 and 60.

Here's a good little snippet of information that I discovered whilst doing a bit of research.

It's a street directory of why certain streets are named or who they are named after.

It's worth a gander.

I'm trying to position this one....

It looks like it says ****** DOCK STATION on the building to the left, right at the top of the picture.

At first I thought it might be Canada, and be the old goods station, but I've checked pictures of that and it looks nothing like it.

I'm wondering if it's further along from the other photo from earlier below, perhaps from the signal box in the distance on the LOHR?

Gawd. How frustrating is that. Other than the final scenes with the police on horses and the column of horse coming around the corner, It's mostly just of people on the streets.

Yes, it is a bit.
It appears that it is just a clip from a much longer sequence but you have to buy it from Pathe.
I'm not sure how much of the other footage will be about Liverpool though.

I think I know where this is now.

I now reckon it is 'Canada Dock Station' on the left hand side.

There were actually two next to each other on that side, the LNWR 'Canada Dock' and the L&Y 'Bankfield & Canada Dock' station slightly further along, both primarily for goods traffic. You can make out the tail end of LNWR ie 'estern Railway' on the hoarding on the wall at the left.

The LOHR also had a Canada Dock station almost opposite these, which I now think is where the photograph was taken from.

So this would be Regent Road.

It also wouldn't make sense for Carbonari to trek to a signal box as I first thought, he would need a permit, but he could go up and walk to the end of the platform.

That whole area was totally flattened during the Blitz when the SS Malakand blew up in Huskisson dock, so there is little to guess where the picture might actually be now other than by the remains of the track beds of the LNWR and L&Y.

Watched the Brian Epstein Stoty on BBC2 last night (might be on the I Player ffor those that missed it)

Some snippets of footage relating to the Kop in 1964 singing Beatles / Cilla Black songs, also some brief footage of the overhead railway.
