The obvious one for me is Crowded house.

But there have been some great bands from "down under" like Men at work.

Still think it's strange that when it comes to Down Under bands some people immediately think of Crowded House and Men At Work when neither sold anything like the number of records that AC/DC shipped.

I don't think sales are necessarily a good measure of 'quality' for me. By that measure you'd have mention Jason Donovan, Kylie, Savage Garden, Delta Goodrum, Rolf, etc.

I'm not saying ACDC aren't a great band, just that more sales don't always equal 'great', but you are right that Angus and co are often over looked.

Personally I liked Split Enz - which partly feeds into Crowded House and then Finn, etc.
Yanks, but new Yanks.  Cautiously optimistic.

Was going to post Eddy Current Suppression Ring who for me are absolutely brilliant and The Drones as well.  Gareth is a class songwriter.  Sharkfin blues is different class.
Quote from: Dion Fanning

The chants for Kenny Dalglish that were heard again on Wednesday do not necessarily mean that the fans see him as the saviour. This is not Newcastle, longing for the return of Kevin Keegan. Simply, Dalglish represents everything Hodgson is not and, in fairness, everything Hodgson could or would not hope to be.

I'm from India, I've seen them live.  Pentagram are a decent live band and they a few decent songs but I suppose its not my style really.  Parikrama are fucking dreadful.  They've been going on the back of that song called "but it rained" for god knows how long now.  A bunch of dinosaurs.  You would think they are a very average 70's hair metal band on a reunion tour.

You lived there in the 90s? Same familiar names when I was there.

Yeah I'm that old. Went there in '96. Went to the Livid Festival in Brisbane that year, was my first experience of a lot of those Aussie bands. Also saw Weezer there, still one of the best live performances I've seen.

There's some great disco and jazz influenced stuff coming out of Melbourne right now.

First up, Krakatau with a two song album they released last year. They look like a thrash metal band, but sound like "Summer Madness" era Kool and The Gang!

Next some live disco loveliness from Harvey Sutherland:

When I lived in Australia I was listening to bands like You Am I, Regurgitator, Spiderbait, Jebediah etc was a very good live scene.

Any mention of Fat Freddys Drop in here?

I'll tell you one thing for sure... I wouldn't trust no words written down on no piece of paper, especially from no Dickenson out in the town of Machine.

I'm not a big festival guy, but I've gotten lucky with few I've gone to.  First one was Livid in 98 which had Public Enemy, Pulp, Sonic Youth, Regurgitator, The Living End, The Dandy Warhols, Money Mark, The Whitlams, Grinspoon, Jebediah, Custard + the rest.

Some excellent names up there:

Also worth noting:

Machine Fellatio, The Hard Ons, You Am I, Dave Graney & The Coral Snakes, The Naked & Famous, The Go-Betweens, Cut Copy, Pnau, The Presets, Flume, The Angels, Hoodoo Gurus
And all the world is football shaped, It's just for me to kick in space. And I can see, hear, smell, touch, taste.

DMA's are like an early 90s mix between Oasis and Stone Roses, they're pretty good.
