Liverpool FC to march at Liverpool Pride 2012
« on: July 8, 2012, 12:38:36 pm »
Quote
Liverpool FC has agreed to being officially represented at Liverpool Pride 2012. As the first football club to support a Pride event, LFC will provide a banner featuring the club crest with LFC staff and LFC Ladies FC (the women's team) marching together with LFC LGBT and other supporters at Liverpool Pride.

LFC will also have a stall at the market place selling various LFC merchandise on the day at the Pier Head.

Other football supporters are also welcome on the march and Liverpool Pride may register other team's supporters if you don't want to march behind an LFC banner.

The march musters at William Brown Street from 11am, setting off at midday. We're registered in the march and Liverpool Pride Stewards will be able to direct you to the right part of the muster.

https://www.facebook.com/events/383162768404966/

This is something I spoke to Paul Amman of the Supporter's Committee about a couple months back, and I'm made up that the club have agreed to officially be a part of the celebrations. For a club of our stature to agree to be a part of it is huge. I realise that it's not the biggest commitment in the world from the club, but compared to what most top football clubs are doing for equality and really making an effort to include LGBT supporters, this is brilliant, and a credit to the club and to the city (who incidentally provide the largest free Pride event in the UK, outside of London).

Anyone who wants to join the march is more than welcome - LGBT or non-LGBT! It's going to be a really good day out.
“Above all, I would like to be remembered as a man who was selfless, who strove and worried so that others could share the glory, and who built up a family of people who could hold their heads up high and say 'We're Liverpool'.” - Bill Shankly

With debates about gay marriage in the church this could be deemed very bold and political of LFC by some.

Great to see the club making a statement that we are a truly inclusive club. I think too many people who love football feel they will be teased and sniggered at if they support the LGBT cause. Same old backward mentality in football and it needs to be squashed. We are all humans and nobody should ever feel excluded. Well done LFC.

Why is it only the womens team though?

Because unfortunately there is a huge amount of fear within football surrounding homosexuality, probably for various reasons.

While an openly gay footballer may be accepted by his team-mates he would be open to widespread ridicule from opposition fans, even if there is a general 'we don't tolerate....' statements from all clubs.

The media too would have field day and the player would undoubtedly be hounded by press trying to grab the latest pic of him and his latest beau.  It would take a brave man to put himself in that situation and maintain his on field levels of performance.

While this is a brilliant step by the club, I imagine that many gay footballers remember only too well all the hype and criticism that surrounded Justin Fashinau when he came out, and few would want to repeat that experience.

Fortunately for the women they don't hold the same level of interest for either public or press and so it is easier for them to make their support for this public.

I think things have changed a lot for the better since Justin Fashanu's day. He came out in 1990, when even Freddie Mercury wasn't publicly admitting to being gay. A high-profile gay footballer will come out in the next two years, I'd put money on it. (Not that I'm claiming to know anything!)

I don't think it would be a problem for first team players to offer support publicly, or join in the parade. Surely that wouldn't make them targets? I agree though we are still a long way to go for male players to come out while playing without fearing the consequences. Hopefully it will change soon though.

Don't think supporting the parade would be a problem for the players. Think the problem would more be that if they actually took part, there'd be tons of people wanting pictures and things signed, which might disrupt the march.

Not if they were on a float...

That said, it could then look like football trying to hijack the pride event, which might not go down well.

I think the day of a current player publicly coming out is a few years off yet.

Undoubtedly, who ever that player is, they will always get stick from opposing fans, as thats just how fans are. they will do almost anything to wind up the opposition.

It will take someone with a very strong will, though, as the barracking will unmerciful in some quarters, regardless if the clubs involved have a zero tolerance policy, or as it has and will become more excepted by widespread football society, and the numbsculls are shouted down.

I'm of the opinion though that it would be a lot easier if it's a player who is more widely respected by football fans of all clubs, than one who is just loved by his own club.

Fans will always have hate figures from other clubs, and players that they have more respect for.  If someone like a Gerrard came out, as apposed to a Suarez, or a Lampard instead of a Terry, it would be a lot easier for a player of that calibre, than of a player who is a hate figure, or an undesirable anyway.

It's going to take a player with some balls to be the first to openly come out though (and no pun intended).

I think the FA/PL would just have to announce a zero tolerance policy with penalty of point deductions and banning supporters from travelling. Then the crowd would police itself. The first player would be in the headlines for a couple of weeks, but it would blow over very quickly, and there would probably then be a spate of them.

More likely that a player at the end of his career might come out just as his autobiography hits the shelves...

Never going to happen, zero tolerance policy or not.

The authorities still can't stop individuals throwing objects, using racially abusive chants, or inflamatory chants and songs such as Hillsborough, Heysel, or even the likes of Millwall fans having a pop ot Spurs fans and using chants about the Holocaust etc.

If they can't fully police that kind of shit now, what makes you think they'll do any better policing homophobia.

On a wider note, why should there be banning orders and points deductions for homophobia when there isn't for the other gobsh*te behaviour?

The footballing authorities have it within them to deal with all such things, but there doesn't seem to be the political will within the sport to do so.  They will pay it lip-service and make an example of, every now and then, when there's a high profile incident or two, but once it dies down, it's very mutch put on the back burner.
