Harry Must Play
« on: May 22, 2007, 12:33:59 am »
I am not lucky enough to be on my way to Athens to see the final chapter in Liverpool Football Club's Champions League adventure, and so I have been shopping for the exact same tins of lager as I was drinking almost two years ago. Back then my daughter was only fifteen months old and fast asleep in her bedroom immediately above the television. As a result of this I defected to the garden shed for the final, knowing full well that were I to remain in the house, my poor daughter would stand no chance of sleeping should The Reds triumph. It turned out to be a wise course of action.

So with superstition paramount, it will be back to the shed once more on Wednesday night with the aforementioned beer not forgetting the same fold out camping chair. It reminds me of watching our first ever victory in the competition back in 1977. Back then I watched the final from Rome on a black and white portable TV in my bedroom. Don’t get me wrong, I am not about to reel off some hard luck story of poverty and hardship, in fact my dad was watching the same game downstairs in full colour. I’m not sure why I watched it on my own in black and white when colour was available, it can only have been the novelty of our recently purchased portable telly. But the thought of Rome ’77 on the said portable was what I clung to as embarrassment loomed at half time in Istanbul.

Back then there was no real debate as to the make up of the Liverpool team. The formation was even more certain. As the build up to the Olympic Stadium showdown continues, no one really knows exactly who will make the starting eleven or what the master tactician Benitez has in store.

Will we line up with a four, four two formation? I suspect it may be five in midfield that is preferred. Benitez will no doubt, quite rightly, be wary of the Milan midfield and perhaps most significantly that Kaka tends to run from deeper areas. With that in mind I feel the Spaniard will err on the cautious side. The make up of the midfield is open for debate of course, unlike the back five which will surely be Reina, Finnan, Carragher, Agger and Riise.

We will, I believe, see Mascherano at the heart of things for Liverpool. At such a young age, he has to be Benitez’s most shrewd buy to date and will easily be up to the standard of quality for such a big game. The same is also true of all of the other options available to commence battle alongside the Argentinean. Alonso, Sissoko and of course Gerrard all have the pedigree. Not my choice, but we could see all four of these midfielders with Stevie G out on the right; able to drift where he pleases provided the shape is maintained when defending. I would prefer to see Pennant out on the right and think he has done enough lately to convince us that he can be effective in the final. That would leave Gerrard free to drift, but in a more damaging central position where it will be easier for him to have an influence. Alonso would be my choice to sit alongside Mascherano. He has a cooler head and his use of the ball is better than Momo Sissoko’s. This will be a game like all European games where possession is vital.

My next selection may be slightly controversial and probably even more unpopular. Harry Kewell is not everyone’s favourite, but is a must for this game. In his time at Anfield I think we have seen very little of a truly fit Kewell. It is then that we see the real contribution he can make. Too many have judged the Aussie on his performances when only 70 or 80 percent fit and as my father has always, and quite rightly told me, you cannot give an honest account of yourself if you are not fully fit. Kewell finally came back into the reckoning for The Reds with only three games to go and looks leaner than ever in a Liverpool shirt. Zenden is reportedly injured and let’s be honest; Gonzalez has failed to look confident against the likes of Watford. No disrespect to the relegated Hornets, but A.C. Milan they are not.

So all that remains is who we shall see up front? If Kewell and Pennant play, it has to be Crouch. If Gerrard is out wide perhaps Kuyt will be preferred as the two seem to have developed an understanding. Either way I think Bellamy must be saved for an appearance later on. Partly down to the fact that he has been somewhat disappointing this term, but also due to Benitez’s belief that substitutes should make an impact. Bellamy’s pace will be a factor later on against an ageing defence. If the manager goes with two up then Crouch and Kuyt it will be.

It would be great to see Liverpool go out to really attack Milan with four at the back, Kewell, Mascherano, Gerrard and Pennant in the middle and Crouch and Kuyt up front. Benitez though, as I have already mentioned, is cautious. We have to trust him as his European record so far is up there with the best. I hope we see Kewell and Pennant with Crouch in attack, then Alonso and Mascherano providing a foundation for Gerrard to get involved centrally. The line up I expect we will see is Reina, Finnan, Carragher, Agger, Riise, Kewell, Mascherano, Alonso, Gerrard, Pennant and Crouch or Kuyt.

I shall be off now to see what price Liverpool are to win on penalties and whilst I’m at it perhaps a double with the final, and therefore winning penalty to be scored by one Robert Bernard Fowler.

Come on you MIGHTY Reds!!

Good read, thanks for that.

I can't disagree with anything, other than HK's match sharpness. Being the cautionary, Rafa may be thinking of HK as an impact sub. A goal from the Hazzer would help his cause no end ;)

Wearing egg on my face is becoming a popular past time for me in recent years.
Every time I call Garcia, the bugger goes and scores a vital goal.
With Peter Crouch I always get hit with a six egg omelette.
I have been one of HK's biggest critics, but do you know what ?
I've got that old gut feeling the fellah is going to make me eat humble pie on Wednesday.
If he does play I sincerely hope he plays a blinder and perhaps it will teach me a lesson.

Not to sure about your Kewell selection - you've really based your judgements on him from 3 games.. :/

I think you make a good point with this, and I have to say - I pretty much agree with it.

I hope Harry plays some part.  He deserves it.  If Carragher had the same injury problems and left the field in 2005, people would think he is a hero coming back, being so brave after everything he has gone through.

It seems very fashionable to slate Kewell.

I love reading about the daft routines and habits we follow in the run up to the match. I have a lucky scarf from the 77 win which has to accompany me to the big European matches. I forgot it for Benfica and look what happened...

Gattusso needs to be worked, the more pace and menace the better, I'd start Bellamy wide on the left and have Kewell on the bench.   On the right, I think a true wide man like Pennant should start. The middle is a dilemma, Sissoko on his day would be invaluable, if he could do the job on Kaka, and I think he is physically capable, I'd start him.   I would rather Alonso than  Mascherano, who I think has yet to prove his temperament and fitness at this level.  I'd much rather have Kuyt start up front, knowing he'll work hard, then he and Crouch if the need arises for a goal late in the game.

Lovely piece, Jim, these are the routines, superstitions and beliefs that bind me tightly to my club more than any player or manager will ever do.

This morning I was packing my stuff together for Athens. The first thing I packed? The scarf I've worn since I was a little boy, the scarf that I had tied around my wrist in 1977 as we sat in our pyjamas on the settee, it's the scarf I took to Istanbul. It's got my love of Liverpool ingrained in every fibre.

My Team

                            Reina

Finnan    Carragher      Agger      Riise

               Alonso     Mascherano

Pennant            Gerrard              Kewell

                         Crouch

On the Kewell slating point, I admit I've given him loads of stick but only because for about three and a half of the four years he's been at the club he hasn't been fit.

There used to be a name for this type of player: A CROCK. That said he's still the best left winger we've got and why I'd start him.
Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.

Weird story that--but a good one--shows im not the only nutter around. I too just bought a new mobile phone and plan to programme it during the game like last time. (Started it at 3-0 and refused to stop when we were coming back) Im sure with all my new numbers --it should take 90 mins so were laughing.
Also i have the same shirt and everything laid out ready--and ive also ran 3 miles every day since the weekend. Apparently God came to me in my sleep and said "run 3 miles a day up till Weds and Liverpool would win". Sounds stupid i know --but im not gonna not fkin do it and then always think it was my fault if the unthinkable happens. Just to let you know --i havent ran 3 miles for years so im blowing out my arse after 10 mins--and i always seem to wanna stop for a shit!--but were all in this together and i put in the same effort i expect from the reds.
No beer either till after the game --dunno why i never drank last time --but i never so thats the rule now.
As for the game i have a real sense of calm now (too knackered from the running to have anything else) I honestly think we will win in 90 mins --which seems strange as it just doesnt seem the Liverpool way, i expect Kewell, Pennant, Xabi, Crouch and Craig Douglas Bellamy to all play their part though im not sure who will play from the start. Selfishly id love to see Robbie just involved, but im not sure he will be --almost want Zenden to stay injured to help his chance, but then he deserves it too --so im torn--only thing i know is i dont care if Gerrard plays in the middle, right or in goal--i just want to win. I dont care if they scored 6 goals that are given wrongly offside and we win 1-0 with a blatently offside goal--i just want to win.

And we will cause ill be programming my phone, running (whilst touching cloth) and not drinking---you can all thank me, Rushian and the rest of us weird fuckers later. Youll find us hammered in the shed, running shoes on, shit stains in the pants watching the portable, enjoying the replays!!!!!

My Team

                            Reina

Finnan    Carragher      Agger      Riise

               Alonso     Mascherano

Pennant            Gerrard              Kewell

                         Crouch

On the Kewell slating point, I admit I've given him loads of stick but only because for about three and a half of the four years he's been at the club he hasn't been fit.

There used to be a name for this type of player: A CROCK. That said he's still the best left winger we've got and why I'd start him.

I agree with this and the original post.  I think he may play Arbeloa instead of Riise just because I think he is a little quicker.

Play your best player in the position most likely to cause problems. This is Stevie in a free role.  This is basically what happened second half in Instanbul.  For me our best performance this year was at home against Arsenal and this was with plenty of width, attacking full backs delivering quality balls to Crouchy.  He is unplayable if this happens, and the exactly what European sides are not used to.  It is no coincidence that Crouch has scored a lot in Europe.  He is something European defenders just don't play against week in week out.

The other key is to stop their best player playing.  Alonso needs Masch there to stop Kaka.

It gives Gerrard more free reign to get forward and Alonso has less of the tackling work.

I'm with Lone Wolf and Lard. Would use the same team. On the routines, I was up in my local on Sunday evening and pointed out the stool/spot I expected to be kept for me! It is the same place I was 2 years ago. Hopefully I won't be banging the back of my head of the wall for the first 45minutes, but will be happy to be coming home with the large lump on the top of my head. Picked this up as I jumped up from the said stool as Dudek saved the last peno and collided with a large concrete beam. Funny didn't really notice it until the next morning.
