http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/family-convinced-liverpool-university-student-1282998The family of a student who vanished on holiday seven years ago are convinced he is still alive.
Steve Cook, 20, failed to return after a bar crawl with pals in Malia, on the party island of Crete.
He was last seen asking for directions back to his hotel on August 31, 2005.
His family are clinging to the theory he suffered a loss of memory – probably after a fall or attack – that has left him unsure of who he is.
Parents Norman and Pat have received garbled or silent phone calls they think could have been their son pleading for help.
One was traced to Dusseldorf, others to Libya.
The family, from Sandbach, Cheshire, have also been given hope by a van driver who gave a lift to a hitch-hiker said to have looked like the popular Liverpool University student.
Brother Chris said: “The driver said he looked a lot like Steve and even described a mole on his face which is not on any of the posters we’ve had handed round on the island.
“We couldn’t take this lead any further unfortunately. But we really do believe he is out there somewhere.”
He said if Steve had died, the body would have been found after seven years.
And he said the volcanic ground of Crete would make disposing of someone there “almost impossible.”
Police here released a photograph using computer technology to show what Steve would look like at the age of 27.
Ex-pats in Crete still hand out pictures of the Liverpool football fan in the hope of finding him.
