Tsar Kastik, where are you getting all of these photo's from?

There's many that I've never even seen before.

I mean. The likes of the one of the Custom House is a pearler.

Richie,  I just mooch around and save any pics that I find I like, they don't take up much room. A lot of them can be a bit samey but i find myself copying them anyway.

Tsar, I was trying to see if any remnant of that Knotty Ash tram sign was still around, for some reason I had a vague memory of something like that from when I was tiny but I think I must be wrong as I'm guessing it's East Prescott well before it was turned dual carriageway, as the tramline ran down the middle along a green lane.
There's a little video here of a tram in later years along there here..http://oldswan.piczo.com/prescotroad?cr=5&linkvar=000044 together with many many more photos of the area.

On another thing from earlier in the thread, I've found this here ..http://liverpoolhistorysocietyquestions.blogspot.com/2009/08/united-states-rest-camp-at-knotty-ash.html about US troops in Knotty Ash during the 1st world war. I never knew that.

Just a point Johnsouthwales, do watch out for copyright infringement if you're lifting pictures from some of these sites. If the site says they have copyright you should really ask for permission before posting anything containing them on youtube just in case they get stroppy. I know we (or certainly I) don't bother sometimes on here, but generally we try provide the main website link somewhere along the line from where we've got them as well as posting the picture(s) up.

I was just doing a little bit of reserch on the mersey tunnel photo's, and specifically the opening ceremony etc.

I was going to ask some of you elder statesmen, when the big black obelisk/lighting tower was removed from the front of the Queensway tunnel, and where it was moved to, or what happened to it.

The thing I'm talking about is in the photo below, as there was originaly two of them. One at each end of the tunnel.

But having discovered this site, below, which is all about Birkenhead, I've just discovered that:

When it opened, the Queensway had two of these pylons. As well as being decorative features, they were placed in the toll plazas. It's actually a giant light column, designed to be big enough to illuminate the whole tunnel mouth. Birkenhead's pylon was moved here when the new toll plaza was built; Liverpool's was tragically dismantled and sent to landfill in the 1960s.

Another bit of 'criminal' damage from our so called 'forward thinking' town planners of the 1960s, and 70s.

I meant to say the other week when I saw this.
My daughter lives where that first building used to be on the far corner.

John, that was taken in 1934 - less than a fortnight after the tunnel was opened apparently.

GS - fine bit of video there, they could move at a fine pace those trams.

Re the copywrite issue - you're dead right. I always tried to attribute the pics I put up, but I've probably turned into the biggest culprit now.
I will say that quite a lot of photos now are out there on Google and these same photos are themselves 2nd. or 3rd. or more hand and not attributed to the copywrite holder.
Some photographers out there are quite happy for you to use their pics freely - others are a bit more precious about their stuff.
The water-marked ones I won't knowingly post - water-marked by an individual that is. If it's a newspaper? ...well I find myself less sympathetic.

I know its not the oldest picture going, but theres just something about this building that sticks in my head.

My grandad worked in there, going back 30 odd years (i think, not sure if its just one of them things that has worked its way into my head and since became fact)   and I cant go past it on a bus or anything without thinking about him.

Might be totally wrong here, but wasn't the "fireproof" depository set on fire in the riots of 81?

It's a place that intrigues me, it just seems to sit there untouched after all these years - is it still used?..who owns it?..are there any plans for it?..and I'd love some of these Urban Explorer fellas to get in and give us a look see.

just hoping it will actually upload - that's the next trick. well, it does say in youtube videos up to 15 mins in length. it takes a long time to upload 120mb. about 45mins

yeah, i asked someone in flickr if i could borrow some pics.. which in turn, turns out that he has his pics n display in the new liverpool museum when it opens  :P
he was good about it as long as i gave him a credit.

some people can be funny about using their pics i agree. as long as it's not for some commercial activities or financial benefit.  if peope were that arsey about pics on the net, they shouldn't put them up then or has some sort of download disablement, as it's obvious someone's going to download them at some point whatever it is.
besides that, i can't remember where i got the others from now.  the only problem i could get with copyright issue is the soddin music.. then again, they ought to be honoured that the music was chosen in the first place.

talking of copyright, the YNWA vid i did the other week - did u know there are copyright issues in some parts of the world with the tune. could swear it's banned in certain countries lol

according to youtube, the YNWA vid is disabled for viewers in.....germany

i had an email form youtube saying that its picked up some copyright infringements but it hasn't been removed....yet. funny they didn't email me about the ynwa vid which is still up.

'glad you enjoyed it. i don't think i have long enough music left to cover the 50s but i'll think of something. i have something in mind....and no, it's not the beatles.

working out the transitions, about 6 seconds is just about ok. anything shorter is blink and you miss it. 10 seconds maybe too long and of course, less pics overall. id say 7 secs is ideal

i just noticed something in the pic. i haven't got that up have i?

anyway. i was chatting to someone last year, and it left me puzzling...how come i hadn't seen it before? i can't remember it and i do not recall anybody mentioning it to me at all. and when i saw pics of it on the net, left me scratching my head.

to be honest, i remember walking around the liver building around 1989. 'can hardly miss it. other times were at the albert dock in 94 and 98

Here's a more convincing one - still before the new Tower Buildings was up, and once again from the LRO.    Should be 1908 not 1910.....and the word 'before' should be spelled 'after'

that pic looks like it was taken from where the titanic memorial monument is now - or there abouts. maybe to the right a bit. in line with the ferry booth road??

That pub behind with the old fellow leaning on the window

is possibly here

I could be wrong but I think what may have thown you is that you may be assuming that Burlington Street is sloping up towards Scottie Rd.  In actual fact Burlington Street rise both ways either side of Vauxhall Rd.  Up to Scottie Road and on the other side up and over the Burlington Street Bridge.  It is possible the building in the photograph was diagonally opposite where William Hills now stands.

Yes, you're more than likely correct.
It would certainly make the slight differences in the windows more understandable.

Any one got any of the old shops in Old Swan where the new Tesco is. Tesco hasn't been there that long but those shops are a distant memory.
