Just saw this trailer last night, it's concept looks very, very interesting. The trailer is excellent as well, you think it's going to be some typical boring documentary about the UN and then BAM! You see 'it' and your whole perplexion of the film changes.

One of the best trailers I've seen in ages (on par with Cloverfield), film has looks to have great potential and Peter Jackson is lending his name to it so that can only be good. Doubt he has any actual input into it mind you!

Site is also very interesting, there's even YouTube videos with people protesting Alien rights.

Alien Apartheid with massive ships hovering over Jo'burg and big robots catching RPG's in mid-flight.

This looks incredible!

Looks amazing, although I must say, so did Cloverfield and that didn't turn out to be as brilliant as I hoped.
Although with Peter Jackson having a word in, and from what i've seen so far, has loads of potential.

Could be a very interesting film, if they do it right. Trailer looks good, but I'm worried that it'll all go tits up and be shit. I'd really like someone to put out a good movie at some point this year

Very obivous idea, to show all the worlds prejudices without fear of libel retribution or offending anyone by targeting a fictional race, but at the same time making it in your face obvious who it's aimed at, it's taking the disclaimer "Any resemblance to actual persons or events is purely coincidental." to a new extreme.

The way I see this failing is it becoming a poster boy for the PC brigade (love thy neighbour bullshit) and losing it's horror/sci fi edge.

So you haven't see the movie, don't know what its about, but managed to construe that its about something you don't say exactly what, but end up blaming any anticipated failing if it doesn't suck the balls of your theory of what it means on a pre-determined in your head metaphor on some mythical and cliched 'PC brigade' bullshit. Great stuff.

Anyway, all that aside, this has had some stellar reviews, looking forward to it for sure.

Remember a movie called Alien Nation about aliens who come to earth as refugees? Similar kind of idea perhaps.

Really like the shantytown, slum, favela stylings.

So you are saying the PC brigade don't exist?

But not my point, I wasn't writing the film off, I was merely voicing my fears that it has the potential to become a good film but also harbours the potential to come over all soft because of it's angle that's all.

"but managed to construe that its about something you don't say exactly what"

Well from anything I've seen on the film/short it appears portraying our treatment of refugees/immigrants in 'real life', only instead of people it's aliens that are getting the shit end of the stick and shows that everyone is in on the game; Blacks, Whites and Asians just to make sure no one race is seen as the sole perpetrator.

Now if you can't see that as some reflection of our society in a fictional setting and an opportunity to have some interracial love-in then you must've been watching a different clip than me or you are slow.  That's why I believe this has the potential to turn into sentimental muck.

Someone gobbing off about the 'PC Brigade' over a theory of what a movie that he's never seen means is a sign of an absence of thought, a strawman the size of a Mount Everest, a cliche, and a boring load of knee-jerk ideology and prejudice with a silly political agenda ("inter-racial love in" he sneers when you don't even know what you're talking about - and even if it is about that I reckon South Africa has enough of a history to reflect on those themes - so fuckin' what) and that strangles all that is decent and good in art and cinema with its dogma and silly strawmen. Especially a film that is getting great reviews like this.

Can't wait to see this movie. It'll probably dissapoint you because its good  :thumbup

Fuck me, can't you read? You're sounding like a Apple Fan Boi, creaming over a film that YOU know fuck all about and shitting on anyone who may not agree (although I have not said in one of my posts that I don't like the look of this film), let me guess a Peter Jackson fan Perhaps? Oh he's got his name on it. Quick! Get the tissues, he made LOTR you know.

Sorry if I'm not allowed to speculate that the film has a huge potential to be watered down tripe, I must be crazy thinking I can have an opinion and leave myself open to get barraged with your fucking patronising analogies. Plus what the fuck has South Africa got to do with it? It's just a fucking location. This film's story could be set anywhere, Jesus bring it to Northern Ireland sure, we're big on our racism/bigotry these days and we have enough of a history to reflect on these themes.

Let me recap my thoughts on what this film could potentially be, I've provided it in list form for you, perhaps it will be easier to follow. (Sorry if I sound patronising).

1. Great Science Fiction (I never used Sci-Fi in case it's too Cliche) movie with an original 'angle (Cliche?)' in it's genre.

2. A big pile of steaming shite a-la Independence day, a whole "Hi-five" and "yeah man we're great" storyline with a slight undercurrent of "we are the world, we are the people".

3. I hope it's good.

Alright. Calm down lad. I don't even know what an Apple Fan Boi is. It sounds like something you spend a lot of time worrying over. Anyway, it wasn't what the movie is about that I was pricking, it was the daft strawman you were drawing around it.

This moronic strawman called 'PC Brigade' who you reckon conspire to make movies about aliens who come to earth which are actually about promoting sly and pernicious ideologies like 'inter racial love' and 'love thy neighbour shite'. What a load of crap.  Forget about you knowing all this without even seeing the movie.

Based on the short film - Alive in Joburg.

Shot in South Africa, Directed by South African. South African cast, South African movie but the Cherry on the top is that the rest of the world gets to see it before it gets released here in South Africa - oh good times.) :)

The short was very cool - the film should be very interesting.

I've read a review saying the special effects look better than than those in Avatar, considering this only cost £30mil that's quite an achievement.

I saw this movie last night and I liked it a lot.

Spoiler
It has many of the normal sci-fi themes except for the aliens not attacking until attacked. It also borrows from a few video games. One of them is really easy to see and I won't give it away. The story is compelling and for a sci-fi movie, save a couple moments, is believable. The worst is one where something needs to be retrieved from a building in downtown and it cuts from the characters in District 9 (outskirts of the city) to the building with out explaining how they got there.

I wonder how the government and the country of Nigeria is going to react to this movie. They are not shown in a good light at all.

[close]
I would recommend that you see this movie in the theaters. The visuals and the sound really deserve a theater setting.

Saw it last night and thought it was fucking brilliant. So much better having this type of thing set somewhere else other than America and watch them save the day...again.

The whole thing from start to finish is superbly made, the performance from Sharlto Copley is absolutely immense and will no doubt launch his career. He gives just the right amount of comedic value to the role, and couples that with an array of emotions when things start to 'go wrong'.

Effects are astounding, direction is superb, the pace is perfect, and I'm going to have to see this a few more times at least. Wonderful, wonderful movie.

That's about too. Just rename the .srt file to the same as the movie, stick them both in a folder, play folder in VLC media player.

The version I have is fantastic. Up there with my favourite science fiction movies have to say, absolutely loved it from beginning to end. Some incredibly disturbing and sad scenes. One in particular has been stuck in my head. I don't know how to do spoilers on this though so won't bother to explain which one.

Have to say i really really enjoyed it. Don't really want to comment on it yet, as i really want to go see it in Cinema again.

One slight thing that bugged me a bit, was all the 'News' and Documentary style bits, think grand, by doing it the way they did, it set-up the movie brilliantly, but once things started to happen and the action got going, i could have done without it.

Kept smiling to myself everything he said "Fuck", which was often, because he says it how a big dirty Irish culchie farmer would say it. ;D
