I see that Cameron is right on the edge tonight (in the debate) in his positioning and Miliband is bang centre. Now i'm likely to vote labour, but i want to see Cameron front and centre, getting it from all sides. Not sure if it was planned or the positioning balls in the bag were hot, but i get the feeling Miliband will be targeted tonight. Seems like it could be make or break for Milliband to a lot of people, especially the swing or non committed voters.
The Conservatives are really quite annoyed at the way the draw came out. Cameron is peripheral on all wide shots, and has to crane his neck to his right all the time to listen to the others or look disengaged and haughty. (He's also on the far right as the viewer sits, which will have a subliminal effect in reinforcing people's beliefs about the Tories, especially as Bennett of the Greens is on the far left). The sitting Prime Minister can only lose in debates like this, which is why he didn't want to do them.
Whereas Miliband is in the 'prime' position and can engage or ignore without looking like he's billy no-mates. Obviously, the spotlight is on him but this is exactly what you want if you are the challenger. Of course he will be targeted - he should
want to be targeted. Miliband needs as much screen time as possible to dispel the media image of him. If he screws up, then it won't matter where he is in the positioning, but if he does well, Cameron will look like a hanger on.
It's a really bad draw for Cameron.
