'No connections available' Laptop Problem
« on: December 28, 2012, 09:43:56 pm »
2 days ago my wifi Internet connection disappeared along with all the other wifi networks around me that were available. All that it says now is 'no connections available' with a little red cross next to it. I tried a wired Internet connection but nothing, still the same message in the bottom right corner when I tried to connect to a network, there just aren't any there at all. I have a Sony Vaio, the networks switch is on and there is another laptop and 2/3 other phones connected to the wireless we have and all working fine so it must be my laptop. Anyone have any ideas?

My Computer>Device Manager
Select and unistall the network card, then restart the machine

Tried this, when I restart the laptop it still says no connections available. O should probably mention I rang Sony Vaio tech support who also got me to do this but after this they wanted me to back up all my files and restore the laptop to its original settings. Surely there are a few more things I can try before that ?

Doesn't 'no connections available' tell you something about how much your mates want to see you?

Wireless zero config? Admittedly I've only ever seen XP devices have problems with it, but it's possible that it could happen to a 7 device.

Just going to add that WinsockFix actually brings up a pop up box saying repair complete, please reboot now but when i click ok another one pops up straight after saying run time error '53'. Tried rebooting of course and still the same unfortunately.

I've used command line before when following step by step instructions from online. If you told me to go do something on it now I would have to google how its done rather than just do it myself.

Done all this. Should I try Winsock again? 'No Connections Available' has not changed.

Appreciate you helping me out by the way. Especially this late, don't let me stop you from going sleep though  ;D

It's not a silly question! I'm the only tech supporting a school of 600 devices and the amount of time teachers insist they've checked all the basics only for me to get to their room and turn the wireless on on their laptop...

Sometimes you can overthink the problem and it turns out to be something ridiculous (last week I was trying to install LAN drivers and going entirely on the systray icon for success, 5 minutes later realised I didn't have an ethernet cable plugged in - I blame the fact it was the last day of term entirely!)

i would try the command line version... (it will reset all to original)... you cant break it doing this....

start (bottom left) all programs-accessories-command prompt
netsh winsock reset catalog - press enter
netsh int ip reset reset.log hit - press enter

reboot laptop....

without having the laptop in my hands .... it's really hard to diagnose ...

I've downloaded that batch that automatically does the commands for you. Rebooted the computer and tried Winsock again. Still the same outcome as before. Am I doing something wrong?

And I agree not a silly question at all, I actually accidentally switched wireless off the other day and thought what the hell is going on. I realised quite quickly though and got it back on, which is how i know it isnt the problem here.

Go to command prompt and type in ipconfig /all

Does it display all your adapters with either 0.0.0.0 or 169.254 addresses?

I have done that but no adapters come up just host name, primary DNA suffix, node type which is hybrid, ip routing enabled which says no and wins proxy enabled which says no also.

Is it possible someone else has taken an IP that is static on your device?

Also, type services.msc in run and check the service for DHCP.

DHCP is started, automatic and a local service. I'm really not sure about the IP thing. The only networks I use is my home virgin one and my uni one which is a wired connection in my room.

Is it possible that there is something actually wrong inside the laptop? The LAN port or something? I'm going to take it to a repair shop tomorrow and see if they can see what's up with it.

i actually haven't as I have had bad experiences with system restore in the past on previous laptops. Might give it a try though. There is no 'wireless zero configuration' in my services aswell don't know much about that but I've been trying to reset the services to default settings and just spotted that.

If you go into control panel then network and sharing center what does the little picture show? Does it show public network, private network or unidentified network?

It shows this but without the 'wireless networks are available' bit under it. Under mine it says you are currently not connected to any networks. This is obviously not my screen but thats what the picture looks like.

https://images.freeola.co.uk/knowledge-base/network-and-sharing.jpg

If I go into change adapter settings literally nothing shows up. Just a blank page.

What network adaptors are showing up in Device Manager, and do they have any question marks, warning triangles or red crosses over the icon for them?

Fixed!!! Took it to a repair shop where they sorted it in 2/3 hours for £10. Said it was a driver issue and when I asked what was wrong with it he said you haven't got one. Apparently something I maybe updated or just a software malfunction removed the main driver I need for the internet. Took him a while to sort it he said because its a Sony laptop. Just glad I've finally got it back. Thanks everyone who tried to help ;D
