I decided to junk loads of cassettes last year during  a 'nostalgia purge' ....plus I knew the quality would be shite if converted a lot was radio to tape and I have to admit a lot of JP stuff

yes it does and to be honest its took my eye of the ball converting vinyl , its brilliant 100's of stations..Reggae straight from JA!  loads to recommended :WFMU-FM 91.1/Jersey City, NJ; 90.1/Hudson for one

so whats your fave  party tunes then?....Come on Eillien? Agadoo?  or maybe a Leonard Cohen Mix seeing your turning 40 ( the worse Bday ever btw ...you will never be able to say your age with confidence and sound youthfull ever again like a thirtysomething can   :P )

I take it you'll pm the invites!!

I'm a big fan of WFMU which is why I was asking.  Also if you want some interesting music only background then try erika.net and also Radio Guanaca from San Salvador is great if you like latin stuff.  We are digressing dangerously from the vinyl though I guess

popsike.com is a good site for getting a decent guage on how much your vinyl might cost to buy or sell.

Top collection VdM... would love to finger it. Remember the Vinyl Justice sections on the Adam & Joe show? Loved that. "Now what are you doing with that sir?"

I'm currently putting my house back together after a nightmarish session of floor sanding (45m2 of it), including an hilarious screw thru a water pipe weekender, and I thought i'd count my records just for fun before I rehoused them in honour of this thread, but realised by the time I got to Abba that it wasn't going to be much fun at all. I too go in for alphabetical. Sorting it by genre would cause all sorts of debates. So it's Abba to Zip Code Rapists for me. All LP's too, must have 4 or 5 12" or something, and I hunt first issues tho I'm not an A1/B1 Matrix type obsessive, tho it does titillate me.

I flirted with the idea of buying one of those Ł100 turntable to MP3 type machines but didn't want to suffer the ignominy of finding out that it was actually better than the turntable I've got. I have vinyl that's heavier than the plate it spins on. It's a mid 80's Sony midi system that plays records at 34 and 1/4 rpm I'm sure. Everytime I hear a well known track on youtube or on the radio etc I'm going, 'It sounds far better on my system...'. The CD part of it died ages back (obviously), the twin tape deck bit died soon after (due to the fact that the covers broke off early doors), the radio bit is shagged, and the left speaker kicks in only after I give it a few slaps. The lead from the 'amp' to the turntable is as thick as your average iPod headphone. It's amazing that it still works after 25 years. The Grauniad was offering an all in one wooden gramophone/DAB radio/mp3 thingy recently for Ł149. Waste of money. I'd need to hire someone to transfer it - it would take a lifetime of pain.

I used to have an iPod. An 80G one, and almost had it half full. I gorged on downloading, CD transferring, bootlegging... the lot. I'd collect individual songs to make up full LP's that I'd got or didn't have. I had a noticeboard on the wall listing tracks I needed to complete an LP... I filled in all the details... I got a bit obsessed. I'd download whole albums illegally and never got round to sorting them properly, and then the Mac went tits up and I thought I'd lost dozens of LP's that I hadn't got onto my iPod and then two days after my son was born, the iPod was stolen from the back room while we were doing his nappy upstairs (we think) along with an iPhone that was given as a gift and bang... the lot has gone. Two years! We've managed to rescue a huge amount from the harddrive but much is missing and all of the titles are 'CHY%%$Ł' etc or some other shite. I just can't go thru it again. But nobody's gonna run off with my record collection in their pocket are they!? c*nts.

By the way - you can buy software (and I'm sure you know this) that actually puts the pops and crackles onto your digital formats for you - bringing the vinyl experience right at your door! I still laugh about that one - talk about full circle.

Christ... how weird is that? Only two days ago you posted that! If only I had Ł3m. No... 4 million, I'd keep 1 back to build a room for it. He needs to spend a good Ł500k on a good agent - that collection needs a good home. Or... set up a mother of a record fair... 3 for Ł10, keeping a good few thousand back for auction.

ps... 'That's from 1831... how can something that old not be worth alot?'

well, take your greasy burger fingers off the grooves young man!

Ah yes! Haha  ;D Has he still not sold it then?

A million LP's and a million and a half 7" ain't gonna be worth Ł50m - this is my guess anyway. There will be a rack of Phil Collins, a rack of Glen Campbell... etc etc... there will be thousands upon thousands of LP's that are, whether we like it or not, worth a pound at best. I go into charity shops and I see a duff Fleetwood Mac LP with a split down the spine, a scribble on the back and it's not looking that great on the vinyl itself and they're having a laugh at Ł3. I'll give you a pound for that sunshine and you should be delighted. That's what many LP's are worth. I'm sure he'll have Please Please Me on Black and Gold Parlaphone Mono and thousands of other collectable treasures but I bet you 80% is charity shop.

OK, so he's probably got Phil Collins's All Against Odds and the entire oeuvre of Luther Vandross in Mint/Ex condition but he won't be averaging Ł30+ for each LP. Not even my collection averages out at that, :P. What he needs to do is cull it. What's that old gardening phrase? Can't remember it now but it's akin to treat 'em mean, keep it keen... basically... hack it back. Get rid of the (luther Van) dross, and sell the rest en mass. I'd gladly do it for him and I'd gladly be paid Ł30,000 for the years work involved if he's out there listening.

Bet he hasn't got any 'Top of the Pops' Lp's or the complete Zoo Label singles like me!! pah!!...anyhoo!...given the choice, if Im gonna walk through a vast record collection gently carressing the Lp spines with my finger tips it would be John Peels....maybe his wasn't valude at Ł50m...but it would be worth more!.....

Have to plunge my head in the sand... Na Na Na Na...

3 LP's won on eBay recently... Jelly Roll Morton in the middle. The Zappa LP arrived with an added black felt tip fill in of the scuff under the 'Z'. Not happy.

There's been a few emails sent back and forth and then yesterday, I walk into a newly opened bric-a-brac/faux chic retro place nearby with a big vinyl 4 for Ł10 offer on and lo and behold, standing infront of me is the exact same LP, but this time on offer for 2.50 if I bought 4. Vinyl and labels not as good as the Ł12 I forked out beforehand but I bunged in Tubeway Army's debut LP, Johnny Cash at Falsom Prison on CBS and Leonard Cohen's 'Songs From A Room' on the same. Wife was delighted. Rang her up and she put the phone down - I went there looking for cupboards.

Got this today on vinyl. Utterly hopeless and depressing but at the same time, so so beautiful.

Just got a nice vinyl player at xmas, so I haven't got a lot of records at the moment, trying to pick up at least a couple a week.

Neil Young - Freedom and Harvest
Crosby Stills and Nash debut
Walker Brothers best of - some lovely tunes on there
American Dream - CSNY

Turns out that a copy of the Johnny Cash LP I bought (CBS Orange/ A1/B2 Matrix, sticker on the back, thin spine, glossy front - exactly like this one) went for 70 quid a few years back but hits the 30 quid mark alot. The Cohen LP hits the 20 quid mark in similar condition to mine.

Today I spotted an LP by Weather Report for Ł2.50 amongst a small box of rubbish - got a good feeling about it and yep... Ł10/15 I reckon. I'll be back there tomorrow.

Just been playing an old Shack 45, 'Byrds Turn To Stone', (from the corking album Here's Tom With The Weather) the funny thing is is that the A side is at 45rpm like normal, but the B side needs to be played 33rpm! Anyone else come across this oddity on any other discs?

When I first bought Aphex Twin's 'Druqks' 4xLP, I put the first 2 slabs on and really enjoyed it, but the next 2 I liked and everything, but didn't enjoy that much. I think I might have given them another go and still thought... nah... this is nothing this is. Turns out that vinyls 3+4 were supposed to be played on different speeds. Something like that anyway.

Got dragged into a charidee shop a couple of weeks back and there was a box of vinyl. Ł1,99 a record, but Synchronicity was 4 pounds!!? In honour of this thread tho, I parted with Ł5 in purchasing 3 LP's of the charidee shop classic artist, Neil Diamond. I even saw 'Stagger Lee' as a track on an album of his so bought that one... hello Stagger Lee :wave. There were 8 of his LP's in there. But listened to one side of a 1974 LP and haven't played the rest. Awful. I should have bought the Leo Sayer LP. He's OK is Leo Sayer by the way.

I have a fairly big record collection. We sold a lot of it off before Christmas to fund presents etc. but we've ordered a couple hundred in the past couple of weeks, it's all hardcore punk so I'm not sure many people here would be interested. Mainly we get our records from the record labels or from small record distro's (we're starting our own soon :D), occasionally we use ebay because you never know what bargains you can get. I always end up putting tons on my watch list and missing it all because I forgot though.
Enemy, at that time, and now, I cant think of anything good to say about her. She's still being a c*nt

ahh... vinyl is the best. i have about 700 albums at the moment but i'm guilty of selling quite a lot over the years too (y'know, you lose your job and it's either sell the mega rare Cure 300 copies in existence single or starve!)

my latest purchases were yesterday. Missed out on a lovely copy of Fela Kuti's 'Expensive Shit'. the other day )on ebay). it was hanging around the 30 quid mark for days and bunged in a 46 right at the end but lost out a second later - by 50,p! Arse! Such a pretty LP, it almost made me weep.

New deck sounds beautiful.

What do guys use to clean vinyls - some crackles pissing me off.

Good skills on rediscovering vinyl! Cleaning is annoying but makes a hell of a difference. Wash hands, get rid of any big bits of shite off the vinyl. Use a new sponge scouring pad, sponge side (otherwise you might cry!) with fairy liquid, cleaning in a circle round the vinyl, rinse with cold water. If you're still be able to hear tiny crackles, that'll be the vinyl scratched. Does make a difference though - but make sure all the fiary liquid is off before playing!

Some you can live with but not ones throughout the whole album

Agree, spoils the whole thing. It's wierd going to other mates houses who've got the same piece of vinyl, I'm expecting jumps and pops and they don't happen, but then theirs jump in a cringeworthy place and it reminds you to go and get a new copy as it's does your head in. Very organic, expensive business if you get addicted, but a total buzz - hard to explain really. Love it.

Totally agree.

Got three Creedence Clearwater albums the others day and two are mint and one is so bad, it just ruins the listening experience.

But the annoying thing is the vinyl looked mint.

I have unearthed a load of old vinyl.

How do I go about pricing it? Is there a good site.
Estimates will do, or things I should look out for.

If you are selling it, whack a list on here. I would be keen. What sort of stuff?

Discogs is good to check prices.

If you have anything by The Ex (the dutch band), PM for god's sake!  :wave Vinyl only :)

I so want a new record player. Mine is at deaths door.

Will keep a very keen eye out for ya matey :D

Here's my little record/merch distro incase anyone likes hardcore/punk records. It's pretty niche and only just started so it's small but it keeps me busier than you'd imagine: http://www.upsidedownnoise.blogspot.com/
Enemy, at that time, and now, I cant think of anything good to say about her. She's still being a c*nt

I need some help with cleaning vinyls.

Bought a couple of Floyd records and were described as near mint on sleeve.

Looked fine but crackle like fuckers.

Any cleaning tips?

Nick... I use fairy liquid and warm water and a previously unused cloth . Natural sponge would also work fine I reckon, tho not the synthetic stuff. I also use a  blue 'microfibre'? cloth to finish, can't remember the make tho.
