Great bands from the Southern Hemisphere...
« on: March 12, 2010, 03:45:10 am »
The obvious one for me is Crowded house.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=82JZh3VyE2M
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1pyvnw9Sko&feature=PlayList&p=771F9AEA9196C216&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=2

But there have been some great bands from "down under" like Men at work. Colin Hay has done some tremendous stuff with them. Apart from the obvious they did some great stuff like this..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swQi4CAzmrA
and this..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lcu7OCIqlqE

Been years since I heard of the 3D's - I bought that Fits LP when it first came out - that was a long time ago now. Pretty sure Down in Splendour was the first track of it.

Edit: it is indeed a brilliant track.

Speaking of which...  :wave .. I've got a few LP's by two related New Zealand bands, Dead C and Gate . Dead C are great... got Eusa Kills, Clyma est Mort and The White House - the first two come highly recommended, The White House is a slightly tougher listen. Also got a CD of theirs, World Peace Hope et Al which is one for grandma.. ha. Sonic Youth brought them over here for an ATP some years back.

Talking of the Go-Bees, mate of mine saw Robert Forster the other day playing at a museum of all places. Forster would have to be the campest stage presence I've ever seen live....

....and one of the best live Aussie acts - Dave Graney. I saw Graney play when he was busting out with this single

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/WJG6LtwgNZk" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/WJG6LtwgNZk</a>

and it was a cracking evening. Half the crowd was on acid, as was Dave and the band (the Coral Snakes). Graney repeatedly freaked out the audience by busting out with these Elvis kung fu moves, a lot of which were done in slow motion while he gave them a fish-eye stare. I had sore ribs the next day from laughing so hard.

Off the cricket field, on which they are all utter c*nts without question, and given a guitar, the Aussies make some great music. Echoing my homie VdM, my favourite band of all time bar none was The Go-Betweens and my favourite songwriter Grant Mclennan. The Triffids are in my top 10. They have also produced Nick Cave/The Birthday Party, Ed Kuepper/The Saints/The Laughing Clowns, Died Pretty, The Dirty Three, The Church, Crime and the City Solution, The Hummingbirds, The Necks, The Blackeyed Susans, Dave Graney/The Moodists, The Cruel Sea, The Apartments and The Reels. A staggering hit rate for a country full of snaggletoothed soap dodgers.

NZ has punched ahead of its weight - both it and Oz have produced as much memorable music as we have in recent times. The aforementioned Clean and Straitjacket Fits, but also The Chills, Verlaines, Look Blue Go Purple, Bailterspace, The Able Tasmans, Snapper, Chris Knox and the massively, massively underrated (in the northern hemisphere any way) Mutton Birds. Almost enough for me to forgive them Ian 'Smuth' Smith. Almost.
Looks like I chose the wrong day to feed the pigeons...

For me it's the Screaming Jets a band that I always thought would make it big, but it was'nt to be.

Saw them years ago they were a support band I can't remember who they supported now, but they blew me away nothing like FRC live.

Come on

We saw them supporting Thunder, can't remember when though.  Must have been the early '90's.  Grant Walmsley one of their guitarists used to freak me out, as he would just stare at the audience, and Dave Gleeson was a mad fucker!
