There in lies the problem, it isnt soil, i dont have a lawn it is about 3 inches of gravel. Short of bringing in a mini digger i cant see another way around it.

Boiling water for small areas, there are steam machines out there but only professional outfits have them.

My chilli plants are looking good - loads of flowers on them - but when the flowers die off before the chilli's can form the little stalk they're on goes yellow, dies and they drop off

I've just started giving them some tomato food, and water little and often, the soil doesn't/hasn't dried out at all and they're south faciing - i'm hoping the feeding helps but if anyone has any ideas why they're probably been dropping off please say

oh I had a small pointed mushroom like thing popping out of the soil on one - god knows what that was, pulled it up and chucked it away incase it was poisionous and my kids got it

Thanks for the pointer, i've seen loads of organic weed control ideas since you said that. I have a pond too so i wouldnt want any of those chemicals in there.

They're probably not getting pollinated if they're in the house which is why the flowers drop off without fruits forming. Get a very soft, small paint brush and hand-pollinate the flowers.

Haha you really are RAWK's resident Alan Titchmarsh :)

To be fair I did look at the pictures of the gardens on bbc website and that one James May made was pretty impressive.

If I had not covered my garden with wooden decking I might be asking you for tips. I am just too damn lazy to spend my free time gardening.

I hope it stops raining and we get a bit of sunshine soon! I want my beetroots to get a good start!

And bloody slugs are eating my courgettes, so I put some slug pellets around the pot, but I think one managed to do a mission impossible and climb down the bamboo stakes next to the pot and land on my plant :no

Heard that before but you can use orange or lemon peel and if you leave bits of peel around the driveway this should deter them.

Been told that you can kill both slugs & snail with salt don't know how true this is don't have a garden! also that garlic keeps greenfly off your roses.

The salt burns their bottom/underpart whatever its called but washes away in a downpour so you'll need a fair bit of salt.

Garlic on Roses not heard of that one?

Only joking ..  about the plant and herbs etc talk { would leave that part to the other half.. but she wouldn't have any interest  with plants to be honest }... but the landscaping .. definitely would be into that .. Fair play looks great .. did you do the all of it yourself ?
Mate does all that { builder} . Mate said a lot of people who have had decking are geting rid and going for slabs all over instead as decking can be a fucker to keep clean etc plus can be very slippy at times for kids.

I did it all with help from my brother. Yes the decking can be quite slippy but alot of people are not arsed putting a protective coathing on it. Slabs all over is quite boring and regimental as i go for Decking, Patio and Shurbery.

Said the same about the slabs to my mate .... but he said theirs lots of new options  out now.
People going for decking type of wood around the walls of their garden at different heights and decking posting and rails but going for slabs on the floor .. looks very well he said and low maintenance.
