What is the rumored price then?

Even phones costing around 300/400 are usually free or under £100 on contract?

This is the iPhone though ;D

If you look at the prices in the US, it shows it's going to be even worse over here.

I think it's 500 or 600 bucks on a 2 year contract in the states isn't it?

Something stupid, wasn't sure on the situation with mobiles over their, I thought they were all like that but obviously a little cheaper

If you look at their prices and relate it to England, you will be looking at around £300-400 quid on say an 18month contract. Carn't see many people welcoming that with open arms

it's just a crazy amount for that. You are getting a video iPod, so I guess some people will buy it as an all in one justifying it because they are not paying for an ipod.

They did say they are only aiming at 1% of the market.

24months x $119 = $2856 + $600 =

$3456.00

Sounds reasonable.

Sorry, music can't be used as a ringtone

Fucking brilliant. Well done Apple.

That's me sold right there.

There is no bigger fucking blight on the world today than being forced to listen repeatedly to snippts of shite music, through a 1cm speaker, which people think makes them look cool and individual.

If I was in government, I would make a law that all phones must come with 1 ringtone - "ring ring", you know, like a phone is meant to do.

Er... is it only me who thinks this is shit?

And no, Nidge, it's not cos it's made by Apple, I just find these claims from Jobs absolute bollocks, and as Matt says, Microsoft have been doing those smartphones for a while, and I wouldn't have one of theirs either.

They've re-invented fuck all, just crammed things into one device, something that other companies have been doing for a while, and then put a touchscreen it... ooh, I'm so... unimpressed.

The phone I have now does most of those things, and it's not a smartphone nor did it cost a fortune.

Anyone who pays the ridiculous premium to own one of these not-so-'revolutionary devices' is a fucking idiot.

Excellent post.

I prefer having multiple devices which do specific jobs really well than having one device which does multiple things to a limited degree. It's also cheaper this way.

its good though that apple still package old technology with a silly interface and charge a fortune for it

lets be honest, nothing in the iphone bar the OS is worth having, much like all Apple products, its full of old technology and hugely overpriced (i include the touch screen shite as part of the OS)

What it doesn't have:
• Support for all iPod accessories—doesn't support all car adapters for playing back, only charging
• An easy way to transfer phone numbers, via AT&T, from an existing phone
• Copy and paste support
• MP3/iTunes music ringtones
• Built-in game support
• Flash support anywhere (including browser)
• Instant Messaging
• Picture messaging (MMS)
• Video recording
• Voice recognition or voice dialing
• Wireless Bluetooth Stereo Streaming (A2DP support)
• One-size-fits-all headset jack (May have to buy an adapter for certain headphones)
• 3G (EV-DO/HSDPA)
• A hardware keyboard
• GPS
• Removable battery
• Expandable Storage
• Direct iTunes Music Store Access (Over Wi-Fi or EDGE)
• BlackBerry support
• Flash or zoom on the camera
• Windows Media support

Known Problems:
• Can get a little warm after use
• Battery will need to be replaced by Apple after 300-400 charges
• Levy had problems with one of his email accounts, due to his ISP blocking port 25. Apple's engineers "suggested a fix and said that this was something that would probably be addressed in an update."
• EDGE data is very slow
• AT&T's signal is lousy
• No hardware playback buttons (on the phone itself) make you go back to the iPod app to change songs or stop music
• Takes more taps to reach the phone interface than other smartphones
• Getting your contacts onto here from your old phone may be a hassle
• No real-time navigation
• The few web-app programs Mossberg tried weren't' impressive
• Camera is only good with ample light and no motion
• Only 200 text messages included on any calling plan
• Playing back music through an iPod dock may cause interference, so the iPhone "offered to switch to airplane mode". Doing so means you get no calls.

FUCK OFF

WRONG

Cheapest price plan is $59.99 (or approx 30 quid in our money), and it is a decent price for what you get compared to what is available over here because it includes unlimited data.

2 year contracts are common place in the states, but would prob be an 18-month over here. Also the starting price for the handset is the same price that the RAZR was released at over there, as they don't really discount the handsets as much as the UK networks do.

For example, the SE W810i is being sold for $169.99 on the at&t website (cingular), and that is WITH a 2-year contract. Over here, they are giving you a free xbox / ps3 to take one. Completely different markets.

agreed, although they can add a fair bit such as MMS / video capture via software as the hardware is already there

the iPhone2 (or euro-iPhone) wish list would have to have...

decent 3MP camera with flash
GPS (to make the googlemaps app worthwhile)
3G data

then it would be pretty comparable to today's smartphones (n95 class), but with the apple-ness and top quality iPod also built in

By all accounts, it seems a decent piece of kit. It certainly blows the direct competition out of the water.

The way I see it, it's basically a business phone (Exchange, ActiveSync, VPN support) that also has a huge appeal to consumers because it's the sexiest mobile ever made.

Depending on how it's sold, I can definitely see it replacing every Blackberry in the companies I work at. It's basically ideal for me in my job, because I'm often on the road and the always-on Internet would be a huge help.

I'm going to leave this too. I'm an Apple fan as much as the next guy (unless I'm standing next to Smiff or Mudface), but a decent camera has become essential on phone for me now.

I'm waiting for the Samsung F700 instead. Samsung are taking the piss though announcing when it will be released.

I'll get one, but not for about 12 months.

It will hopefully be more fully featured by then (sat nav, etc) and my ipod and phone will both be due replacing then, so an all in one would suit me.

All it'll be to me IS an ipod, phone, email / internet device (and possibly sat nav) so I don't give a shit what other crap it cant do.

unless they add 3g support it will never be a viable email/internet device

the vpn functionality named above is utterly pointless, if you are in wifi range you will simply use a laptop and you are never going to access a vpn on GPRS speeds, or 2.5g edge or whatever its callled, you'd die of old age waiting on it

can it even do VPN?

sure you cant add anything to the iphone yourself, another reason it will never succeed as a business phone,  you have to wait for apple to update the machine if you want anything new on it

As you and mudface like to point out, though, apple are constantly releasing updates to things, so improvements will be a constant ongoing thing.
