I watched the gatekeepers and a newsnight debate on the documentary right after, fantastic piece of work.

I saw the russian prison and CERN storyvilles this weekend on iplayer, great stuff.

Around the 105 minute mark and the bit where one of the head's of Bin Shet meets a Palestinian psychiatrist in London. "We've won", "Seeing you suffer, is victory..." the cycle of revenge, profound. Will try and find that Newsnight thing. That Russian doc had the feel of a Dostoevsky novel. Cern what humanity should be all about.

I hate not being able to watch iPlayer over here! Argh! :)

I have The Gatekeepers downloaded though. Might give it a whirl tonight.

My two most recent watches are:

Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer - really fascinating look at the first three arrests. I found the girls absolutely fascinating, and their eloquence and articulation of their situation in court was really impressive. I have so much respect for them.

After Tiller - generally just pretty depressing watching. Hard decisions being made by only a handful of people trained to perform third trimester abortions, and risking their lives to do so. Those who threatened, attacked and subsequently killed Dr Tiller are glorified by the religious right with no sense of irony. Horrible.
Try the ZenMate app for Chrome, and set to UK. Agree about Pussy Riot, got to admire their bravery.

Storyville -
2013-2014: 29. Russia's Toughest Prison: The Condemned
Storyville: Documentary which looks into the hidden world of one of Russia's most impenetrable and remote institutions - a maximum security prison exclusively for murderers.

I watched this. It was bloody brilliant. Some very candid interviews with the prisoners and staff.

I liked the line from the interview with prison warden near the end. He said something along the lines of: "I wish Russia would reintroduce the death penalty. Some people would not agree......but then they have never looked into the eyes of a killer."

I actually found that Russian prison doco a little disappointing. It didn't dig deep enough into their psychology, or how 20+years' confinement in a prison located in a forest the size of Germany really eats away at the soul. for me, a slightly wasted opportunity.

Now, don't laugh, but Channel 5 had quite an interesting documentary this week about the death of Marilyn Monroe.

http://www.channel5.com/shows/conspiracy-the-missing-evidence/episodes/episode-1-679

I've always had an interest in this, and knew a fair bit - that Bobby Kennedy was at her house the day she died, and always denied it; that she had threatened to go public with her affairs with both Kennedys shortly before she died, and that her housekeeper complained in the 1980s that she was fed up of covering up the truth.

But this C5 doc had some genuinely interesting testimony, to suggest that she was force-fed sleeping pills by Bobby Kennedy's men, then shortly afterwards her psychiatrist killed her with an injection to the heart, after brushing aside an ambulance crew - who had arrived and were in the process of reviving her. The psychiatrist, Greenson, was also one of her lovers, and was the most celebrated shrink in Hollywood. If Monroe had also blabbed about their affair he would probably have gone to prison for inappropriate relations with a client.

Seems like they were lining up to kill her.

In the 1980s, three of the five people who were with Monroe when she died (a senior cop and two ambulance crew) attested to Greenson sticking a needle into her heart, then placing her body on a bed, with a row of bottles of sleeping bills bedside (but, as the cop on the scene noted, no glass of water).

Also issues over a dodgy postmortem, and how the media were led to report her death within hours as suspected suicide. That verdict stands today, especially in the public mind, despite this evidence.

This isn't the most sophisticated documentary you'll ever see, but the eyewitness testimony gives it a lot of weight.

I'm not sure what it's called because Storyville have totally renamed it (something about magic and psychics...) but there was a James Randi documentary on BBC4 tonight - originally called An Honest Liar - and it's really good. Check it out on iPlayer.

Your not wrong. I caught 'Blackfish' again last night. For a film about cuddly cute killer whales it isn't half depressing.  One of the best holidays ever was a trip to Florida a few years back and a couple of glorious trips to seaworld was had.  So glad I didn't watch this before i went.

The first time I watched it I must have missed the 2006 footage of a whale called Kasatka grabbing a Seaworld trainers foot and pulling him deep under 2 or 3 times during a live show. The guy was a trained and experienced scuba diver and only survived due to his diving training.  The look of relief on his face when the whale finally let go of his foot and they got him to the side of the pool.  Fucking terrifying stuff.

Just finished watching 9 episodes of 'The Men who killed Kennedy' on You tube, really compelling stuff, didn't know about some of the stuff on thee - Some of the episodes were broadcast back in the 80's and later added to

Shame that it's a load of shite.

*edit - to expand a little. The original programmes were lambasted for their inaccuracies - all the men named had alibis. The company who made them, Central Television, carried out their own investigation and determined the programmes were total nonsense. Central Television were censured and almost lost their license over the debacle. A third programme was made as a response to the inaccuracies in the first two programmes.

The 2003 episodes made by the History channel was roundly criticised and the History Channel assembled their own panel of experts to review the programmes (the LBJ programme in particular). They found it to be utter shite (my words) and issued the following statement:

"The History Channel recognizes that 'The Guilty Men' failed to offer viewers context and perspective, and fell short of the high standards that the network sets for itself. The History Channel apologized to its viewers and to Mrs. Johnson and her family for airing the show."

The channel said it would not show the episode again.

There are some excellent documentaries on Youtube, there is also a lot of garbage. The Kennedy assassination has been proved beyond reasonable doubt to have been carried out by Lee Harvey Oswald. Yet these 'documentaries' float around the internet uncontested and feed into the public consciousness. It's quite scary.

Have you seen Rush to Judgment, Al? If so, be interested to hear what you made of that.

Agree with those lauding Blackfish - excellent doc.

I hadn't watched it but I'm watching it now. It really is shockingly bad. It's clearly where most of the standard Kennedy conspiracy tropes started but most have been categorically debunked (the bullet hitting Kennedy and Connelly) or are unreliable anecdote or testimony. The signalling supervisor is clearly a hopes witness. He said the third shot 'flips the president over and leaves him on his stomach with his foot hanging over the side of the car...'  Lane them shows a picture of the presidents foot over the side of the car. That photo was much later suggesting the signalling supervisor was matching his testimony to the photo. He also claims to have seen a 'puff of smoke' under the trees by the picket fence after the third shot. Rifles don't leave a puff of smoke.

There's a brilliant bit of nonsense about three cars driving in and out of a car park and 'casing the joint' on the day of the shooting. The cars apparently had out of town number plates and matching political stickers...  And that is relevant how?

Lane leads the interviewees and makes selective quotes out of context.

Delgado is another anecdotal witness. Where is the supporting evidence to show that he's telling the truth.

I think the problem is that Lane is acting as defence counsel. He's not trying to find out the truth. He's trying to 'get Oswald acquitted' posthumously by raising doubts.

I'll be interested to see if Lane produces any credible theory but the problem is that the ballistic evidence, physics and the principal facts point to three shots fired from the Book Depository and the most likely shooter, with motive, opportunity, means and evidence of subsequent actions (killing Tippet) is Oswald.

I'll finish and follow up.

Dunno if you've seen this Al. Last year someone on reddit posted a stabilised gif of the Zupruder film. Its quite clear, you can see the final shot comes from behind him.

I don't know whether to post this. It is by very its subject nature incredibly shocking. Even though we have all seen it a million times. Seeing it so clearly makes it all the more shocking and visceral.

Be warned, its upsetting.

On topic.

Watched Whitey United States of America v James J Bulger the other day. Its a fascinating story. The Departed was in part based on him.

The blurb -

United States of America v. James J. Bulger captures the sensational trial of infamous gangster James ‘Whitey’ Bulger, using the legal proceedings as a springboard to explore allegations of corruption within the highest levels of law enforcement. Embedded for months with Federal Prosecutors, retired FBI and State Police, victims, lawyers, gangsters and journalists, Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Joe Berlinger examines Bulger’s relationship with the FBI and Department of Justice that allowed him to reign over a criminal empire in Boston for decades. Pulling back the curtain on long-held Bulger mythology, the film challenges conventional wisdom by detailing shocking, new allegations. With unprecedented access, Berlinger’s latest crime documentary offers a universal tale of human frailty, opportunism, deception, and the often elusive nature of truth and justice.

I've seen that footage and how Dan Rather subsequently went on national TV and said the head rocked forward, he even gave a demonstration, when it clearly did not. That footage was subsequently taken away by the CIA. You have to ask why? It could be the ricochet argument. Or maybe two people were involved. Don Delilo's Libra is the best thing I've read on the assassination, a work of fiction but I have no doubts Oswald was being 'run' by the CIA. Mailer's classic Oswald's Tale alludes to the same thing. I've always thought Oswald and who else?

Ok - I shouldn't have got dragged in. I've seen the stabilised Zapruder film which has been knocking around for a while. I drafted a final response but lost internet momentarily.

That 'documentary' is a stinking dog turd and is clearly the starting point for so many of the conspiracy theories. The witnesses are contradictory and some appear to be fantasists who claim to have seen things that clearly never happened - a puff of smoke from a sniper rifle?... Really?... Witnesses saying all the shots came from the picket fence and some saying one, or four.

Ten minutes or more on Ruby providing free drinks to 600 or more police officers on a regular basis in return for staying open a little bit late. Even if a bar owner knew a few policemen (quite likely) that proves nothing.

A load of time on Acqulia Clemons who away certainly didn't see the killing of Tippett and nothing from the witnesses who did.

It's a defence case cobbled together from little it nothing. It hangs everything on all three shots coming from the side which is plain wrong.

We're not getting this anymore. Move on.

Conspiracy theories are very much the modern day equivalent of religion. They explain things, they are comforting. It feels better to know there is a plan, that someone is in charge. Even if things are bad, there is someone to blame, someone in control. Its not a god, it replaces a deity, but its still a mythical all seeing presence directing and steering the world.
Its kinda terrifying to admit the truth. We're alone in the darkness of space, spinning out of control at 24 thousand miles a second and no one, not a soul is in charge or control and knows what the fuck we are doing.

They are incredibly entertaining at times though.

This is one of the funniest weirdo things I have ever seen. Its called Room 237. Its about Kubrick's The Shining and the various interpretations a bunch of nutcase obsessives have about it.

Its glorious, they range from things they feel Kubrick is actually saying with the film, to clues he might have put in about other things. For instance that its about the massacre of the native Americans. That there are clues Kubrick has put in stating that he had a hand in faking the moon landings. They are all without a doubt crazy, but it is hilarious and entertaining as a result.

Truth is its the people themselves that are actually the subject of the film, its not about giving their ideas credence. Rather that there are people out there who believe this stuff and take it to such extremes. Its fascinating, funny and weird all at the same time.

Its also interesting if you know the film, as they do highlight some production stuff you may not have noticed before. Whether or not you subscribe to the theories and significance they give them is up to you. Is it accident or design, some of it might be with Kubrick, but just as likely the process of production and coincidence.

Can watch it online here - http://www.putlocker.tw/watch-room-237-online-free-putlocker.html

Will no doubt need to have adblockers enabled on your browser on this kinda site.

Watched the Jodorowsky's Dune documentary. Someone has written an excellent in-depth review in one of the other threads, can only concur excellent and damn, what a film even if technically impossible at the time it would have been. Tempted to read all the books again. They also made the Afghanistan connection which was going on when Dune was written.

I've always thought Oswald and who else.

Yeah the JFK shooting is incredibly dodgy.
Oswald was definitely set up but we'll never know the truth.
So many insane theories that just discredit any serious attempt to look at the case, but then I guess that's the point.
