Liverpool will target big signings in summer - Ian Ayre

Liverpool will hand manager Brendan Rodgers a significant summer transfer kitty as the club seek to build on qualification for the Champions League.

The Reds, favourites to win Premier League, believe Europe's elite competition will help them attract top talent and are willing to pay for it.

"It will cost what it costs when we decide who the manager wants to buy," said managing director Ian Ayre.

“We always expected that the squad we need for next season will be very different to the squad for this year”

Ian Ayre Liverpool chief

Liverpool's small squad have benefited from not playing in Europe this season.

After finishing seventh last term, their target for the current campaign was to finish in the top four.

However, they have exceeded all expectations and are now assured of at least third place, avoiding a qualifying play-off to reach the Champions League proper.

With three games left, they top the Premier League table and need seven points to be crowned champions.

"It has always been tougher in the transfer market when you are not competing at the highest level," said Ayre.

"We have always been fortunate to be able to bring great players here despite that, but there is no question it opens up a few doors for us and makes it a little bit easier.

"There is no question we always expected that the squad we need for next season will be very different to the squad that we have needed for this year when we were not playing in Europe."

It is likely that Liverpool's main focus will be on defensive reinforcements.

Defensive reinforcements would be good. Imagine how good we'd be with a properly solid defense. Both full back positions need upgrading massively.

"It will cost what it costs when WE decide who the MANAGER wants to buy," said managing director Ian Ayre.

Oh my lord, I wish Ian Ayre would keep his grid shut. That sentence doesn't even make sense!

We need to focus on the here and now of winning the league, no distractions so there is no need to discuss potential signings at the moment.

Can someone gag that bloke and lock him in a cupboard until the end of the season, preferably longer.... :-X

Agreed. Why make players worry about their positions with just three games to go? There's no benefit to us from this statement other than to give the fans the idea that he's doing a good job.

In before Luke Shaw seen on a the train and this turns into a transfer thread that gets locked.

In all seriousness I think it's a tad daft, we all know what he's saying. Was there a need to say it?

The only reason I could think of that would benefit us, is if it's to say to a player(s) who are maybe looking at deals being shown to them by other clubs.

There is a sort of myth in Premiership football that Liverpool hasnt done well in the transfer market over the last 3 or 4 years. We clearly have done well or we wouldnt be standing at the top of the table currently.

Heard this all before, although now players may want to come here given CL and hopefully being champions.

If we could pinch Lloris and Eriksen from spurs, I'd be happy with that for starters.

Why not wait until the end of the season for this sort of chat from Ayre?  Why say it at all even after the season ends?  If there's a sizeable amount available bragging about it will potentially add an extra 10%+ or so to any deal

He doesn't say an amount, or even say a lot, just it costs what it costs, which is about as vague as you can get.

Do it. Don't talk about it.
That should be mirror-tattooed onto Ayre's forehead.

The irony is that the biggest signing required is a proper MD/CEO. Especially now. God knows the sight of Parry's ties at those televised draws in Nyon was bad enough, but Ayre takes cringeworthy to a whole new level.

Not defending Ayre here, but when has he let us down on transfers?

The only deals that fell through last year was because the cost of the player exceeded what we were prepared to pay for them or an owner refused to sign the release documents, neither of which are Ayre's fault.

Agreed the timing is crazy, let's back the current squad and not make them wonder about the future right now.

The time for this is after the season is over.  And at that stage the first signing to be made is surely to get Brendan onto a much longer contract?

"It will cost what it costs..." said managing director Ian Ayre.

His quotes always seem confused and lacking thought.
