Calling All Writers
« on: April 26, 2012, 08:26:33 am »
GESET (Greatest European Story Ever Told) is fast approaching it's time for update (10 years) which will also coincide with our 50th Anniversary of playing Euro Football.
The Original Story Which covers our games and fans recollections of same between 1964-2003 is in my possession and I will be adding editing amending stories for new print.
As the work was always a collaboration of many writers, we will be looking for other writers to submit their stories of trips to Europe between 2003 onward.
If you are interested in submitting stories to be included, please leave your name below.
I will leave a list of games between those dates shortly for you to select matches attended.
As last time, all funds generated will be going to charities (if we can find a publisher)

Karl
Living descendant of Sir Thomas Brodrick, Vice Admiral of the Red in the 18th Century

They both went in high, that's factually correct, both tried to play the ball at height.  Doku with his foot, Mac Allister with his chest.

Cheers Terry, keep the pics for now, it will depend on space.

As this project will take over 12 months I've asked for a sticky.
Post Stories below and I'll file them at home and assemble as I go. Original was 120 pages looking to reach at least 200 with revisions and additions.

You may get hundreds of these but I have my story (already written) about Barca away (Riise and Bellamy).  You are more than welcome to have a look if you let me know how to get it to you.  Other than Istanbul, my only Euro away game and how fate followed me all of the way from Christmas present to the Nou Camp.

As for the publishing, there are loads of sites such as blurb.com who publish as few or many as you want.

Anyway, let me know.

Inter Milan away 2008 was a great but ultimately hugely expensive trip for me and a few mates. Also have a great one from 2008 at Emirates Stadium where my mate's foot was stood on by a horse trying to get in through the turnstiles resulting in us missing both goals, oh yeh and the semi at home to Chelsea in 2008 where I was so tired after working a night shift and then spending the day with no sleep with my mates that I fell asleep standing up in the Kop and missed JAR's own goal. Bet there's a few who are jealous of that. Also, Athens 2007, what a trip to and from there via Ancona in Italy, a 25 hour boat trip, a 5 hour train with an American mad man screaming at me and an incident in a bar after the match involving a bet gone wrong. Would be a pleasure to recount the events of those trips for you.

I went to pretty much all of those games from 2004 onwards although the memories are a bit hazy, I was pissed most of the time!

There are much better writers than me on here so I'm sure you'll get a lot of good stories, but once you've allocated games if there are any less popular ones where you've received nothing then I'd be happy to knock something up.

Might be an idea to have a nose through the Euro Away threads as well - plenty of gems in there.
I think we'd have won the league if we'd sold Keane to Man United.

Great response so far from here and some of my old contacts on facebook.

Sarah ; cheers babe yer a star. Timescale 12-14 months so no panic. Criteria must be humour based and not match report based. I've always been more interested in build up and after match antics.
Writers should remember the match is only 90 minutes long, the travel, build up and after match jolly can last 3 days.
caught up with Andy Roper is USA he has agreed to come out of retirement.
sadly one or two other old favourites have said they are too busy.

Michael Pheeny Jon ; If you lot cannot come up with more than one I'll be gobsmacked. I know you're like me regarding the match v jolly percentage. If I cannot get seasoned travellers to join in i'll be in trouble.

Kev ; quality contribution that would make mate, many thanks

18 carra ; there is no limit to how many stories per match are told, humourous stories will always have a place. I'm obviously expecting loads from Istanbul and that may be more of a chapter than a single story.

Love the game ; Submit your favourite, submit them all, the more the merrier. I will not be the only one selecting what is considered for inclusion, this is a JOINT effort. I only act as compiler and "Polyfiller" filling all the gaps.

I keep reading that people cannot write. I DO NOT BELIEVE that. Everybody has a story inside them. Worries are mainly a confidence problem. remember this NO ONE CRITISISES EFFORT.

OK I'll start penning a few - the ones that stick out are Galatasaray, Inter, Eindhoven, Madrid and Marseilles Aways.

Just a quick question - what are the legal ramifications if a mate of yours possibly may have allegedly done something slightly naughty?! ;)

That is what makes (GESET) unique it contains our Naughty antics, however
I always check that mates have no objections to article and often change names to offer anonymity where necessary.  Trips to Amsterdam are a classic example.

We will be using articles from RAWK, but we do need permission from OP's to use them.
If writers offer their posts, they will be included in first draft.

There will come a time when we (The writers & all who help) will have to hold a discussion on what we would like to do with any funds raised. Obviously what we choose will be based on how much we achieve.
I have been doing some thinking on the matter and I am in conversation with several people.
I will obviously have to talk to the club at some point to make sure they agree with any proposal, but at this stage that is some way off.

Yesterday I approached TOM MURPHY (The man who made the Bill Shankly statue) and asked him for a 'ball park figure' to produce a likesize (8') Statue of Bob Paisley to stand alongside Bill.
Here is my request and his response.

Dear Tom
I am currently compiling a book with a view to generating enough money for a monument at Anfield.
Although at this stage I have no idea how much will be raised, I'm curious how much money would be needed for ;
A likesize statue of Bob Paisley to stand next to Bill,
or a bronze plaque to commemorate the 50th anniversary of our first ever European game.
I appreciate its like asking how long is a piece of string, but a ball park figure would do at this time.

many thanks
Karl
Wooltonian

Dear Karl
It would cost in the region of 60k to make a statue of a similar size as the Shankly. The are other options such as a low relief  bronze plaques depicting his achievements or a bust .I know the is a lot of people that would like to see Bob Honered in this way .Fund raising is very hard.If you would like to phone me I can explain all the options.
Best wishes
Tom

To be honest I was gobsmacked at the figure of £60,000
I do not expect the book alone could achieve this figure, but surely this could be achieved by this and other possible events ie Auctions of memorabilia and sponsored events, run by this site and other LFC sites.

Before I contact others, I'd like to know YOUR feelings on this.
Would it not be a great achievement for Fans (like us) to succeed in raising a Statue to Bob ?

I've written a couple (maybe more?) that were put on the front page here. Istanbul, and Olympiakos in 2004 I can remember. Happy for them to be used. They are far from technically perfect mind - I could look at tidying them up a bit if you want.

Karl,

I think it is a brilliant idea and I think RAWK would be totally behind it, as I'm sure would loads of other sites.  Your best publicity though is always that first blast so I reckon it might be best to consult with the club first and check that they would be OK with the statue and then get something setup on JustGiving or similar so people can donate.

Get all that lined up for May 25th to commemorate the first of his legendary hat-trick and lets go for it.

Ive been writing for Red All Over The Land for several years now. One of my first published articles was how me and a mate won tickets for Istanbul.

If you can use it you can have it, I suspect everyone has a story about that game.

Best of luck with the project.
