Looking for recommendations for 4 people for a Tapas Restaurant in city centre, preferrably with a bit of atmosphere and that can book in advance.

Salt House Tapas, Neon Jamon Berry St are the two I am aware of.

Any preference in terms of the above? Or any other places recommended?

Thanks :wave

What burger did you go for? I had Chilli v3.1 (or summit like that). Pepperoni on a burger....who knew! ;D

Went to Neon Jamon on Berry Street, wasn't overly impressed compared to previous occasions. Croqeuetas were tiny, mainly tasteless and hence way overpriced, you get double for half the price in Spain. Mushroom sourdough was very nice and cheese plate was half decent. Either i had a bad night or people are easily impressed. Also out of various drinks which isn't great.

Been the Peruvian place on Bold Street twice in the past week. Preferred the cheaper lunch menu over the options I got on the main menu. Ribs on the lunch menu were the best I've ever had. Lunch menu was cheap, evening menu had us paying £75 quid for 7 plates, 2 desserts and a bottle of wine. As I typed that I realised the evening price might not had been that bad for what we ordered  ::)

Ta mate.

+ 1 for the lasagne bites.

Had a great meal with my cousin at Italian club fish a few weeks back.

I had calamari and prawns and fish bruschetta. Cousin had olives and some squid ink pasta.

Just a great meal in a great setting. Would certainly go back.

Earlier in the day we'd eaten lunch at tea house on lark lane. Great little spot.

What's Cooking? in the Albert Dock.

Fantastic food with a great atmosphere, highly recommend it.

Cheap aswell compared to some places in the dock. 4 glasses of coke, 2 milkshakes, a steak meal and a burger meal came to £54 for two people.

Noticed on Renshaw Street a shop was getting fitted out and had adverts for Yukti on it, they have a restaurant in Old Swan. Supposed to be one of the best Indian restaurants in the city.

Yeah the Yukti in Old Swan is ace, they'll take some business off those other curry houses on Renshaw St without too much trouble.

Went to Bakchick on Bold St earlier in the week. Lovely food and great value. Had the farrouj Meshari for mains( full chicken option) and shared a Mezze platter for starters, Mrs LS had the Lamb shawarma, all top notch.

No booze, but  plenty of options.

Where do people recommend eating in St. Helens?

I've been going to Havana in the centre of town but the service is getting worse.

There's only really The Sefton, Wetherspoons and that Hudson Smokehouse I've not tried yet.

ba buursi is run by the people who had the one on the lancs that has recently closed. Surprisingly good quality for st helens i thought. Owners were nice blokes. Said because their old place had shut they didnt have the money to decorate yet so don't expect anything fancy but its a good curry. Come to think of it can you even mess up an indian curry? Off to yukti next week. Got a deal on I believe £20 for 2 people in May

Just going slightly off topic here but does anyone use any of the few online food services where your ingredients come pre packed . I got offered a free week trial through my niece with one called " hello fresh " and have had it now pretty much every week for the last few months .
https://www.hellofresh.co.uk/tasty/

I opted for the 5 meals a week box which can feed up to three as there quite generous portions most of the time , after my initial trial box I was a bit sceptical about the price of £49 per week but it does have lots of good advantages . The first is because my main meals are delivered I'm certainly going the supermarket a lot less and with that theres less temptation for crisps , biscuits , offers etc so it seems I spend less now . It gets delivered on a Sunday in a one hour time slot and all the meat , fish , cheese comes wrapped in packaging wrapped in ice , the individual meal comes colour coded for each particular meal and all the ingredients are inside the only thing you need are salt , pepper , olive oil and water . It comes with 5 menus which are easy to follow and have had some really stunning dishes .
This week they've sent me three vouchers to dish out with a code on for anyone to try so if anyone on here fancies a free week trial ( 3 dishes are free for 5 I think it's an extra £5 ) then pm me , you can stop it or pause it anytime you like and theres no obligation after your free week . I'd certainy recommend it if you enjoy a decent meal at home

Yeah, i knew that about the Lancs one. The previous owners ( Nabis) was probably even better, but they run into money problems and were ripped off when they opened in warrington. The ba buursi site in the town centre  used to be Le frog, which was also decent in its day.

Anyway, back on track to Liverpool, had a great brekkie in the Tavern on Smithdown last weekend.

I did this last year on the 3 day menu. The food is really good but we'd just had a baby and thought it was a good idea to get decent food but didnt factor in the prepartion time its not just a lash it in the oven - really nice food though just have to get used to ordering on time and not getting stuck with the meals on a week when your busy or out but there are options to freeze weeks if you dont need it and its easy to cancel which we did after a few weeks

Something I wrote about a recent trip to the second Mowgli, the one on Water St. Photos in the link.
http://theplatelickedclean.blogspot.co.uk/2017/04/mowgli-street-food-water-st-liverpool.html

Mowgli Street Food, Water St, Liverpool

I've been following the career of Nisha Katona with interest for some time now. The 'barrister to "curry evangelist", broadcaster and restaurateur' path isn't an especially well-worn trajectory and Mowgli Water Street is the second instalment of her rapidly expanding vision. Manchester followed soon after, Birmingham is imminent. Others are planned: she is clearly a woman on a mission.

This building, a former bank, is an impressive refurb: a bright, airy space overlooked by a mezzanine, period fixtures picked out winningly. It's an immediately attractive marriage of the old and the new.

It's a savvy menu with more than one eye on current needs and trends. There's a generous selection for vegetarians, plenty of scope for vegans and a whole page of gluten-free options. Rotis, naans and the like are found in a 'Carbs' section, making them easy to avoid for those depriving themselves of the good stuff. In short, this is Indian street food brought bang up to date.

My friend Mark, a regular at the Bold St branch, tips me off about Himalayan cheese on toast (£4.75). It's not something I'd have gone for, usually, but it's good advice: a bold cheddar further bolstered by coriander and chilli and sour lime pickle elevates this from your quick snack staple to a real treat, something to kickstart the taste buds. It is at once something comfortingly familiar yet spikily new. it spoils you for anything else, and makes your typical example look a little drab and dog-eared by comparison.

This kind of menu stands or falls by its zip. Leave it hanging around and it is, inevitably, diminished. But even when Mowgli is at capacity, the dishes emerge quickly, punchy with freshness.

Gunpowder chicken (£5.95) doesn't bring the explosion of sheer heat the name might suggest.

It's far more layered than that, battered bite-size pieces of meat laced with chilli and tamarind for a rich sweet-tart treat which is the kind of thing my NHS will prescribe when I assume power.

Children aren't patronished with bland guff here, either. My three year old daughter's dish is a scaled-down pot of their curry and rice, a Keralan-influenced concoction of mustard seed, curry leaf and coconut milk.

Maa's Lamb Chops (£7.95) serves up giner and garlic-scented meat- they hit that sweet spot of balancing charred fat and tender meat, too- on top of crisp turmeric potatoes. If they weren't Tayyabs-beaters, they were at least worthy of mention in that standard-setting company.

A red cabbage coleslaw (£1.95) is zingy and light, cut through with red chilli heat and tempered mustard seeds. It's a lovely thing, the sort of thing you could eat by the spadeful.

Chickpeas (£4.95) are along the same moreish lines, just right for mopping up with the excellent roti which arrives soft and scorched by the bars of a grill.

Agra Chicken (£6.50) is all about sweetness and subtle heat, the bright bite of ginger rather than the warmth of chillies coming through most tellingly.

It all makes for a remarkably satisfying, but surprisingly light, lunch.

It's easy to see why Mowgli has been so successful, already following local heroes Lunya in making the brief journey down the M62 to Manchester. There's an audible buzz to the place, an infectious atmosphere of people enjoying preparing food for people who enjoy eating it.

Nisha Katona has developed a winning formula with Mowgli. And if she ever reads this, can I suggest something along these lines?

M62, M6, M5, M50, A449, M4. That should see you right to Cardiff.
