Liverpool Gig Guide
« on: October 5, 2006, 11:56:44 pm »
Right. I love live music and in an effort to get you all out to gigs a bit more I'm going to try and keep this beast updated. So please post on here info on any upcoming gigs in Liverpool, early email newsletter/fanclub only links to tickets would obviously be welcome too  ;).  In order to try and keep this thing manageable I've limited it to national bands, so there are no DJ shows listed and no local bands playing at the "rat and ferret", although if someone wants to start a "Local bands to watch out for" thread I'd be an avid reader.

Liverpool Music Week - Nov 4th to 13th.  The big name gigs are in the listing but for all the free gigs in bars around town look for the special Liverpool Music Week posting further down the thread.

Venue Guide

Barfly
The Barfly specialises in small bands still making their mark, catch the right band at the right time and it'll be one of those gigs you always remember. Arctic Monkeys anyone? There are two main rooms where they put gigs on. The Loft is the most used and is fine as long as the gig is not a sell out, if it is then areas from which you can actually see the band will be rammed. If your listening Barfly, do us all a favour and knock that wall down  :).  The Theatre is a bit bigger with tiered standing making it one of the best places in Liverpool to see a band.  Bands also sometimes play in the downstairs bar, usually as part of club nights.
Carling Academy
The old L2 is Liverpool's premier gig venue, in terms of the number of gigs they put on, if not in lovability. It too has two main rooms, access to the bar is usually pretty good, partly as a result of the piss-take bar prices. The main room is a fairly characterless rectangle with a small balcony area at one end, the view and sound is normally OK though. The smaller room, normally listed as Carling Academy 2 is long and narrow and suffers from a low stage with a slightly raised dance floor in front of it which means your unlikely to Phil Collins, or any drummers at all for that matter.
Empire Theatre
Any band playing here as basically made it onto the post-rock cabaret circuit. It's a big Victorian theatre with good views, the Upper Circle is great for observing the hairloss of whichever ageing rocker is playing.
Korova
Tiny venue through the back of the Korova bar, would probably not merit a mention if it were not for the association with the EVOL guys from Ladytron who have managed to book some fine acts to play there in the last year or so.  The ceiling is low and the stage non-existent though so don't expect to see anything.
Philharmonic Hall
Art Deco concert hall with great acoustics puts on a reasonably interesting list of acts with a slight emphasis on World Music.
University
Or the Guild, or the Academy...  it's been rebranded so many times in the last few years that nobody is sure what it's called any more.  Consists of three venues. The biggest is the Mountford Hall (Acad/Guild 1) which looks kinda like a school gym and usually has nightmarish scrums of students trying to pay by Switch around the bar. The best is the Stanley Theatre (Acad/Guild 2) which is a cracking little place to see a gig. There are occasionally gigs in smaller back rooms (Guid/Acad 3 or 4) but these are normally as part of club nights.
Zanzibar
Club venue that mainly puts on local bands, often as part of club nights.  You normally get a pretty good view and you can watch the bands while getting served at the bar, which is always a bonus.

VdM - can we incorporate this into the RAWK Guide to Liverpool for Visitors? The gig section there needs updating (as do the theatre and a couple of other sections) and I was going to ask for volunteers for the various sections this week as I launch into the overhaul ... just needs a copy and paste - I'll do the requisite if you give the nod.
If you're going to sign up on Betfair and fancy getting a free £25 on sign-up then use my refer code 749DCNQGK and I'll also get a £25 bonus ;)

Gutted that the New York Dolls gig falls on the Carling Cup game V Reading. In cases like this, the reds triumph over all.

So going to see The Complete Stone Roses at the Academy.

Strange, saw them in Liverpool a few months back and it was a stroming gig with plenty of interaction starting with them parading, marching band stylee, through the crowd to get to the stage.

First off, a recommendation.  I went to see, the excellent, Howling Bells last night and the first support were a duo from Sheffield called Slow Club playing what I have, probably rather irritatingly, dubbed alt.skiffle.  Anyway they had tunes to burn and had a kind of off-kilter charm.  I got talking to one of them at the bar and he said they had two more gigs coming up in Liverpool.

Nov 15th  Supporting Tiny Dancers at the Barfly
Nov 11th  At the Zanzibar as part of Liverpool Music Week

Get down there and say hello, after all it's not every week that you'll see a woman playing a kitchen chair.

I'll add the LMW gigs to the guide this weekend.  :wave

Hi, biased I know, but mates of mine are playing the Zanzibar tomorrow night.  They've been playing under various guises in Liverpool for a couple of years now and soon expect to feature on BBC NI on ATL TV so they are eventually making headway.  You can get a preview here on their myspace site.
