April 25th

1914 - We played in our first FA Cup Final, but lost to Burnley in the last ever Final staged at Crystal Palace. Tom Miller had a strike disallowed for offside for the reds before ex-Evertonian Bertie Freeman volleyed the only goal of the game, one of his nine against us. King George V that day became the first reigning monarch to attend an FA Cup Final.

1973 - We suffered our first ever defeat in the UEFA Cup, 2-1 at holders Tottenham Hotspur in our sixth meeting of the season. However, Steve Heighway’s strike took us through to the Final on the away goals rule despite Martin Peters’ brace, two of his fourteen strikes against the reds.

1978 - Tommy Smith played his 638th and final reds game as we beat Arsenal at Anfield in the League. David Fairclough grabbed the only goal of the game as we secured the points to ensure our sixteenth consecutive season of European football.

1981 - Winger Howard Gayle scored his only reds goal, on his full debut, as we held Tottenham Hotspur to a 1-1 draw at White Hart Lane, with Glenn Hoddle netting one of his four goals past us for the home side.

1984 - An Ian Rush brace booked our place in a fourth European Cup Final, as we won 2-1 at Dinamo Bucureşti, to go through 3-1 on aggregate. Rush reached forty goals for the season in a match played in a fiery atmosphere after Graeme Souness had broken Lica Movilă’s jaw in the first leg at Anfield

1987 - Blues old boy Steve McMahon put us ahead against Everton at Anfield. Kevin Sheedy equalised with a free-kick past Mike Hooper, before flicking the V’s to the Kop. Ian Rush added two more to equal Dixie Dean’s derby scoring record of nineteen, as we won 3-1. However, our neighbours still went on to reclaim the League title.

1994 - Ashley Neal struck from the penalty spot in our 3-2 reserves defeat by Nottingham Forest at Anfield. This was the final reds goal scored in front of the standing Kop, two weeks after Julian  Dicks famed spot-kick at the same end of the ground, and six days before Jeremy Goss’s historic strike.

1998 - Rob Jones made the last of his 243 reds appearances in our 4-1 defeat at Chelsea. Karlheinz Riedle nabbed our consolation that day.

2001 - The official club website liverpoolfc.tv was launched.

2007 – Future red Joe Cole bagged the only goal of our Champions League Semi-final first leg defeat at Chelsea, as the Blues were unable to get past Pepe Reina a second time, despite an under-par reds performance. Jamie Carragher played his 89th European game, equalling Ian Callaghan’s club record. This was the first time we had faced the same team in European competition three consecutive seasons, as well as being the third round in a row in which Bolo Zenden had come up against a former employer, following ties with Barcelona and PSV Eindhoven.

2009 – Dirk Kuyt played his hundredth League game for the reds as we won at Hull City. Xabi Alonso bagged his nineteenth and final reds goal to open the scoring just before the break, pouncing on his own rebounded free kick. Caleb Folan was sent off for the home side before Kuyt headed in. Geovanni pulled one back with Kuyt then making it 3-1.

2010 – Future red James Milner was voted the PFA Young Player of the Year after scoring twelve times in 49 games for Aston Villa that season. He was also named in the Team of the Year.

2010 – Maxi Rodríguez bagged his first reds goal as we won 4-0 at Burnley, following seven away fixtures without victory. Steven Gerrard bagged a brace early in the second half to open the scoring, with David N’Gog also netting in injury time.

2015 - Fabio Borini made his 38th and last reds appearance as we were held to a goalless draw at West Brom

His confidence is shot unfortunately. I havent played football but i have played Tennis and anytime you lose confidence, you are hitting it down the centre of the court with as much pace as possible.

The chance wasnt hard, he was close to the centre of the goal, no defender ahead of him just Pickford, who himself was rooted to the spot and with a huge gap to his right to aim at.

Second half as well we just didnt involve him at all.

It was shit, we were pretty shite, Boss is leaving soon - which is uber shite. It's just a bit shit.

Dissect, disseminate, stats, blah blah blah. We just haven`t been quite good enough this season.  The announcement probably has played a small part, but there is no good time to do that and to some extent it would have been out of our control.

Just need to be philosophical about it, as hard as that is.

So if we tried that first half then it’s a clear foul as we couldn’t go near them without them falling over.

Hopper was ignoring Klopp on sideline who was clearly questioning why the officiating was so inconsistent.

It’s also just cliched bullshit about ‘wanting it’. We should have been leading at HT if our strikers didn’t snatch at chances.

How do you explain the same issues in the Atalanta game then? Because we lost a shit load of duels all night that night too and it wasn't the same ref as far as I'm aware

I can’t believe hit it straight at Pickford when a simple side foot into corner brings us level.

What was clearly visible last night, and this probably lies at the heart of our recent disintegration, is that up until the point our strikers had a flurry of missed sitters - we were playing well and pinning them in ruthlessly. As soon as they failed to convert those chances, or at least fucking one of them, our heads dropped and tempo fizzled out. We never really recovered. It's strange to look back at this season, where for the longest time it seemed like we had the most varied and potent attack out of all contenders - and say we lost it all because of attack. But we did. Football is about goals. We lost goals. Inability to convert clear chances not only dented, but literally corroded our confidence and dulled our sharpness. There are obvious defensive 'asleep at the wheel' issues - but considering attack is more closely linked to our identity and approach to football - for me this is what ruined the season.

In retrospect, we probably should have used Danns more. Boy was riding high and he could have at least been our finisher sub in absence of Jota. But we didn't. Klopp was loyal - one last time. And one last time his loyalty to players has come with a heavy price. It's who Jurgen is, we get that. I do hope they all feel like shit this morning. I don't think they will. They'll giggle their way into breakfast and training, just another working day I suppose. Maybe make some cry-emoji social media posts and move on with their pampered lives. But I hope some at least feel the pang of guilt. Because when the moment came around, they weren't present. They didn't see it as the moment to be there, to be counted. They let it slip.

Absolutely spot on.

It's fair and correct for people to say that several players through the lineup (Ibou, Szobo, Jones, Endo) have also had their levels tail off badly. But no matter how much of a cliche it is, you can't ever understate the importance of goals changing games and changing the mood.

The same thing happened in the second leg vs Atalanta - Salah missed what was for him a really scorable chance and the mood and hope plummeted from there. Same thing last night. Once Darwin and Diaz missed those chances, we mentally gave in. If Salah's goes in vs Atalanta, and we get to the break 2-0 up, then I think we get another one or two in the second half. If Darwin scores his biggest chance last night, I think we go on to win in the second half.

Collectively the players should've done better recently, but to me, the goalscorers in the team are the most culpable. They have absolutely killed us the past 6 weeks. Darwin in my opinion will never be a guy we could count on - he is what he is. Salah's disintegration is pretty incredible to me though. I still can't think of a worse example in elite sports where the superstar of a team completely and utterly shrank and disappeared for an extended period when in the decisive part of the season.

People are overstating the pace thing. Salah hasn't been rapid for a couple of years at least. He had found a way to compensate for that and still be a really good attacker.

What we're seeing since his return from injury is something else entirely. He seems completely shorn of all confidence, is getting physically bullied in most games, honestly doesn't have any spark whatsoever. Our one decent performance in the past six weeks came when he was benched.

I don't think I've ever seen such a drop off, especially for such an extended period and at such an important time. Pace is only a small factor.

Of all the numerous opinions on Salah, I actually agree with this the most. His pace has gone off, but he's been clever in being able to adapt to allow for that in the last couple of seasons. But his confidence seems blown away at the moment, and that's the concern. It's also hard with how you deal with it, leave him on the bench and it gets no better. Play him and he is still struggling anyway, I don't know what the best solution is at the moment. Salah like all players will have their own fears about their futures as well, it will be an unsettling time for the players as well, as to where they fit in going forward.

You can say Everton were winning their duels but when they clattered our players nothing was given and when we challenged their players a foul was given almost every time. The ref gave Everton the licence to attack our goal with set piece after set piece.

I'm sorry but that just isn't a reflection of the full game at all. Quansahs tackle in the second half where he left a bit on (I think) docoure was the first time I saw someone putting something in that looked like they fucking meant it all game
