Preview: West Bromwich Albion V Liverpool 26 September
« on: September 19, 2012, 03:07:24 pm »
I know, we only played them the other day. Nonetheless, here we are, and in a different competition this time, the newly monikered League Cup. Other more conventional media may be contractually obliged to call it by the sponsor name but we’re not them so screw that.

The last game was best forgotten about and this will be an opportunity for the two clubs to see how their respective new managers will treat this competition, the less attractive sister of the English Football Family. Last year with Swansea in the second round, Brendan Rodgers made nine changes to his line up and went down 3 1 to League Two side Shrewsbury on a night he described as his “most disappointing in football”. Glad he got that out of the way.

Our more fresh faced fans may not realise this but West Brom are one of the heavyweights of English football. One of the founder members of the League, they have five FA Cup wins as well as a League and many other trinkets. They have also spawned some greats of the game, including England Uber Captain Bryan Robson and cult hero Jeff Astle.

But I want to tell you all the story of a trailblazer named Laurie Cunningham.

Laurie was a Londoner, the son of a Jamaican jockey, and a tricky, diminutive winger cum striker who kicked off his career with Leyton Orient (after Arsenal rejected him). There he caught the eye of Johnny Giles, then manager of WBA, culminating in a move. Black players (and Laurie was one) did not have an easy time of it then, but Laurie had company at West Brom, with Cyrille Regis and Brendan Batson. When Fat Ron Atkinson took over the following year, he named the trio The Three Degrees (after the all black/female hitmakers). Fat Ron, eh? Here’s a quote.

Quote
"At that time, for a short spell I reckon we were the best team in Europe," Atkinson told BBC Sport.
"We didn't put any restrictions on Laurie - I just told him to get the ball at his feet and go and do damage with it.

"I had Bryan Robson for years and at Atletico Madrid I had Paulo Futre, who was a European footballer of the year, but Laurie could live with any of those."

Cyrille Regis on Laurie.

Quote
Regis still takes great pride in what they did together at West Brom, silencing the racist crowds that were commonplace in English football in the 1970s.

"Players like Justin Fashanu, Luther Blissett and Garth Crooks were coming through at that time but what happened at West Brom was radical, three black guys in one side was incredible," he told BBC Sport. "There were lots of stereotypes then about black players - that we couldn't handle the cold weather, that we were all flair and didn't have the right temperament - and when you've been brought up in London in that time, as we were, you certainly know you're different. "We couldn't do a Cantona and jump into the crowd, so instead you thought 'I'll hurt you with my ability'.

"There was a massive sea change among managers too, people like Graham Taylor, David Pleat and John Bond. They said 'these black guys can play'."

Laurie’s time at West Brom was a distinct success, and in April 1977 he became the first black player to play for England at any level, against Scotland in an Under 21 international. Two years later, he became the first black player to play in a senior competitive game for England, against Wales. Viv Anderson, the elegant Forest right back, had cracked the mould six months beforehand, but in a friendly.

The story goes that Laurie did so well for West Brom against Valencia that year that Real Madrid started sniffing around.

Quote
"That was the game that everyone remembers," said Regis.

"He was electric, it was 90 minutes of sheer class. Everything went well - that performance captured whoever was looking for Real Madrid and sold him to the club."

In fact, another version has it that Laurie fetched up at the Bernabeu that summer and said, well what about it? They bit and the protracted negotiations took place at Fat Ron's house, I shit you not, the Madrid representatives all piled into Fat Ron's shag pile carpet and faux walnut drinks cabinet living room. Nobody spoke anyone else's language and they had one interpreter, so they ended up writing numbers on bits of paper. At one point, Ron's dog barked and Ron said to the Madrid boys, ya see? Even the dog thinks your offer is mad!

Anyway, a deal was done and Laurie became the first ever English footballer to play for Real Madrid. He had a successful first season, including an away win at Barcelona, where he apparently got a standing ovation from the socios, and won La Liga and Spanish Cup medals.

The following year, he was one of only two non Spaniards (the other was Uli Stielike) in the Real Madrid side who lost the European Cup Final to a certain Merseyside outfit captained by one P. Thompson. Interestingly, one of Liverpool’s first black players, Howard Gayle, was on the bench that night.

Laurie’s career after that was a peripatetic one, taking in loan spells at Man Utd and Gijon, as well as moves to Marseille, Leicester, Rayo Vallecano, Charleroi and Wimbledon.

From “baggiesteve” on the Footymad WBA forum…

Quote
I have been attending the Hawthorns first team games since 1968 (I was a schoolboy) and up until the arrival of Laurie in 1977 had never seen a black player perform on our turf.

Cyrille and Brendan arrived the season afterwards.

Despite fierce intimidation, racist remarks and having bananas hurled at them which they ignored then they answered their critics with what they done on the pitch and were instrumental members of the best ever Albion team in my lifetime.

This went further than just the playing side, suddenly black faces started to appear on the terraces, black kids started to take an interest and joined school football teams whereby they only played cricket previously.

A top division black player was practically unheard of (however there had been a few earlier players, Clyde Best for example) but no team had ever had three playing the same side at the same time.

35 years on then approx 40% of Premiership players are black or of black origin.

England gave football to the world, West Bromwich Albion (a founder member) provided the impetus to give football to the people regardless of race or creed.

Those are two facts written in History which can never be denied or challenged and is a subject on which we the supporters, the club and the town are highly proud.

Laurie Cunningham died in a car crash in Spain in 1989. He was 33.

Really enjoyed that. Have to be honest being born in just 1981 a lot of the above was before my time. In fact it wasn´t until the early 90's that I understood racism in the world at all.

to be honest sounds like the lure of Real Madrid ruined him. 30plus years on and they are still signing talented players just to rot on the bench. Sahin would do well to force a move through to us if things go well for him this season. Real Madrid are more likely to sign whatever the next flavour of the month is than give him a real stint in the first team based on their past form.

Due to thin squad and injury scares we need to send the youngsters there and give them another chance to develop. Is Shelvey suspended for this game as well?
Make NextGen the NowGen for a day. Don't need players tired for Norwich, as we need our first win badly.

Very good piece. I did like the team 'Big Ron'(s) (Long leather) produced in the late 70s. Regis was a nightmare for centre backs and Cunningham was an excellent player too. Ron's good work for WBA got him the gig at Old Trafford too, for which we must also be eternally grateful.

Sure this won't be easy. Think we'll see Sahin and Assaidi again. Would like to see Morgan in his preferred position and Yesil get some game time.

The John terry thing will have calmed down come this game so the media will obviously try to heap pressure on Brend and the team if we get eliminated from this comp

Not too sure what to expect from WBA in terms of personel, will they rest many, just a few, or maybe none? Think we know the answer our selection, similar to that of Young Boys away i reckon, experienced players like carragher, downing and reina, mixed with youth.

Like the Europe League i see it as an opportunity to do well but also give the fringe and younger players opportunities.

Good read about Cunningham and West Brom's role in giving a chance to those players. While it may be known  to many as part of the history of the game, it's always worth highlighting the bravery of these players as well as the darker side of the 70s and 80s. It's a good contrast to all the fooball was better in my day, fans were proper fans, sky tv bellends yada yada yada that some tend to come out with. Some things are certainly better now.

Want to see more of Wisdom, Robinson, Sahin, Pacheco, Suso, Wilson, Assaidi. The youngsters are far more receptive towards the manager's methods anyway, although the first team have shown good progress in the game v Utd.

Probably our lowest priority competition, so treat it like the early Europa League games. The injuries to Kelly and (probably) Agger have complicated things with picking a defence.
Jones in goal, although Reina is giving me worries with his performances, so does he need games?
I expect Johnson back at RB, with Enrique on the left for Premier league, along with Skrtel and either Carra/Coates, so for Europa league and League cup games - probably Flanagan and Robinson as fullbacks with maybe Carra and Coates in the middle. Although Wisom had a good game last week.
In midfield, rest Gerrard and Allen to give Henderson, Sahin and Coady games.
Up front - rest Suarez, Borini (if he may have an injury) and Sterling and give games to Downing, Cole, Pacheco, Suso, Morgan, Ngoo, Assaidi and Yesil

Against Yeovil we played:

13 Myhill
18 Jara
25 Dawson
28 Jones
30 Tamas
10 El Ghanassy
11 Brunt
15 Thorne
22 Gera
08 Rosenberg
09 Long

Reckon we'll play a similar side to that.

I think the only 'regulars' in that line up are Jones, Brunt, Long and maybe Gera.

I hope and expect Rodgers to rotate again pretty much the entire first eleven. Their is simply no other way and choice to go.

The sunday showed to positive effect of fresh players, in our situation it´s even more important in order to start getting wins.
One thing does need to be said: in the post-Benitez era, there was media-led clamour (but also some politicking going on at the club) to make the club more English; the idea being that the club had lost the very essence of what it means to be ‘Liverpool’. Guillem Ballague 18/11/10

My first ever game was us against West Brom, we won 3-0!

I dont think we have any choice but to play a very young team. However, an injury crisis such as this could be the making of several young players

Coates
Wilson
Enrique

Henderson
Sahin
Shelvey

There really isn't.  I think a lot of us, even our own have started doubting it. It's time to rise up. And take what is rightfully ours. It's a big mountain, but what is the point in achieving something, which everyone can?

Fate has given us a mountain too big. We have to rise. We have to believe.

My team would be Reina - Wisdom, Skrtel, Coates, Enrique - Hendo, Suso, Sahin - Downing, Yesil, Assaidi.

I would play the strongest defense we can muster; WBA will probably play their best line up and it won't be pretty if we stick in a team like that against Young Boys. Skrtel has shown earlier that he can play a lot of matches and I am sure he can handle this and Norwich (and get rested against Udinese).

There is a chance of Suarez starting but seeing as he is our only remaining forward Rodgers may be cautious.

I have a feeling that we may end up fielding a decent side. The Young Boys was a special case as it involved a long journey and was not a knockout match.
Would love the 19th more and more trophies; but would love even more to see a fan owned LFC.

A reminder and polite request. Please read the article, digest and then post. I can't understand the mindset of someone who'd read an excellent, thought provoking piece like this and rush to post a bloody team lineup and nothing else. So I can only assume some aren't reading it.

The writers of this site are making a concerted effort to post new content and it's pretty insulting to them if people are just seeing the word 'preview' and treating it like any old preview topic.

If you must post formations, try to add a little explanation and summary.

Thanks :wave

The memory is a weird thing Corkboy. I'd actually forgotten about the tragic death of the wonderful Laurie Cunningham, but one of my faintest, faintest football memories as a kid is (beside hating Man U before I was 6) is WBA beating a cracking Everton side in the 1968 cup final.

As for Bryan Robson, I doubt a better player will ever grace their shirt again.

How similar is Sterling to Cunningham? Will Sterling soon grow to as good a player as Cunningham undoubtedly was?

In terms of the match itself, I am excited to see how our youth, who performed so well against Young Boys shape up against another English side. Lots of intrigue surrounding this game, and I am starting to find the lesser competitions more exciting to watch simply because we get an extended look at the younger players in a high pressure environment.

Thing to remember for me is that the West Brom game was our first step. The team v Manchester United has already come a long way since then.

The question is what team does Rodgers put out? Our Europa League side or our Premier League side, or some amalgamation of them both? I´ll be honest, if Carragher plays, Long and/or Lukaku will maul us all night long. It won´t be pretty. It might be "Sama time" (I´m already pushing that as our song for him right now!). I think Sama has all the physical attributes to match up well against Lukaku and would love to see how he handled him. I think we´ll see a midfield of Henderson, Sahin and Shelvey for sure with him being suspended. I´m expecting to see Assaidi continue to build first team fitness and either Suso or (if Suso is earmarked for the first team at the weekend) Downing on the flanks. I would play Yesil in the central attacking role.... just to see what comes of it.
My first article on Anfield Index on Shaqiri. Enjoy. bit.ly/2mAq3Qd

RAWK needs to have a post number limit, like 100 a month or something. Once you guys recognize someone posts good articles, waive that limit. This self restraint expected from posters isnt really possible. Or make a sub-forum that is like summer transfer where people can post crap.

A post limit is actually a good idea. That way people would think first before they write crap as they have a limited number of posts. Hopefully it will also herald the end of stupid one liners or worse, one word posts. And if they still write stupid one liners, hey, at least they can only inflict a limited number of posts so you don't get pissed off too much.

OP was a good read, nice effort. Would love to twat Steve Clarke and his boys, but I imagine they'll put out a fairly quality side. As to how serious Brendan takes the 'Capital One Cup' we'll have to wait and see, but to be honest we can't put our heart and soul into it. With EL, prem and this there's no way Suarez and co (Skrtel, Allen, Sterling) can play everything. We knew as much in the transfer window but there's nowt we can do about it now
Fuck it, I'm taking me dog for a walk. The pair of us are completely bollocksed and take turns a piece dragging one another along. We look a bit like one of Roy's midfield pairings, but with a wee bit more guile and panache. Well, on the dog's side, anyway

Time for the young lads to get stuck in. We risk Luis or Raheem and we are up shit creek. Same again from the young lads, chance for Danni to shine.

Jones - Perfect game to give him some playing time

Wisdom - Performed well against Young Boys and a good chance to give him experience vs a Premier League opponent
Carragher - Captain and leader for a young team
Coates - Picks himself
Robinson - Promising youngster and now our #2 left back with Kelly's injury & Johnson likely to revert to right back

Sahin - Experience in the midfield and needs playing time
Henderson - Did well against Young Boys
Suso - The more game time he gets the better he will be

Assaidi - Fitness and playing time
Downing - Needs a game?
Yesil - With Borini's injury he becomes even closer to the first team, needs to start playing

In terms of what sort of squad will be selected I think there is no real option but to select a weakened team.

While a loss would be a negative and would generate some flack, I think with the situation in the league and the the state of the squad, there is no real option but to select a weakest possible team. It's vital for our season that our first-teamers are kept fit for the next three league games.

Injured/Suspended
Shelvey
Kelly
Lucas
Agger
Borini
Cole

In terms of injuries it's hard to see either Agger or Borini featuring given the reported state of the injuries. I presume Cole is still not fit. So that leaves us with the following fit players to select from.

GK
Reina
Jones
Gulacsi

DEF
Skrtel
Coates
Carragher
Enrique
Wilson
Wisdom
Sama
Flanagan

MID
Gerrard
Allen
Henderson
Sahin
Coady

FW
Suarez
Sterling
Assaidi
Suso
Pacheco
Yesil
Morgan
Downing

Things become somewhat less complex if we rest those who it would be a disaster if they got injured.

So the following wouldn't be named in the squad.

Reina
Skrtel
Johnson
Allen
Gerrard
Suarez
Sterling

So I think the likely team will be as follows

---------------------Jones------------------------
--Wisdom--Coates--Carragher--Robinson--
-------------Sahin-------Henderson------------
---------------------Pacheco----------------------
------Downing-----Yesil------------Assaidi-----

Subs : Gulacsi, Enrique, Wilson, Flanagan, Coady, Suso, Morgan

There is the possibility that it might be Gulacsi in goals and Jones on the bench. However I'd be a bit surprised if that happened.

Coates will be given a run in preparation for the Norwich game.

Carra will probably be alongside him but after the Young Boys game he has to know he is on thin ice. I'm assuming Wilson will be on the bench but a wildcard pick might be Sama there. However given the situation I think Wilson is likelier given his relative greater level of experience.

In terms of right-back the options are either Johnson or Wisdom. Given it would be a disaster if Johnson got injured and on the back of Wisdom's performance against Young Boys I think he will get the nod.

The left-back one is a bit more interesting but I think it will be Robinson's chance to start. There is a chance that Enrique will feature as an older head but with the injury situation to Kelly I think it makes more sense to give Robinson a start. Outside possibility of Downing starting here but a bit remote.

I really don't think Allen can be risked (if he picked up an injury it would be an utter disaster) I also think Gerrard will be rested.

I think Henderson and Sahin will start as the central midfield two with either Suso or Pacheco ahead of them.

I'd lean towards Pacheco myself but it might be that Suso is higher in the pecking order.

Pacheco wasn't great against Young Boys but I never fancied the idea of him leading the line. I think he needs game time.

I think Assaidi is a cert to start on the left to improve his fitness further.

Up front I think the big gamble will be Yesil.

It's very much a gamble but I don't Suarez can be risked and with Borini's injury he is too much of a gamble.

If things arent going well for Yesil bring on Morgan at 60 mins.

I think Downing might start on the right to add some experience.

There is the possibility of him maybe switching to left-back if Robinson goes off rather than bringing Enrique on (depending on how the game is going) but I think its a little unlikely.

Whichever of Suso/Pacheco loses out is a good bet to be involved in the form of a substitute.

Coady is in the squad as cover for Henderson and might get a run late on.

Flanagan is a bit unlucky but he is coming back from injury and hasnt played since he got injured.

There wouldnt be a whole lot of experience in the starting line up I listed with Yesil debuting, Wisdom starting his second game, Robinson his 7th appearance.

It would be Assaidi's second Liverpool appearance and Sahin's third.

If we managed a win with this side it would be a massive result. However if we lost with this side and performed well, it wouldn't be a complete disaster as it would most likely be a good learning experience and it would make managing the squad for the rest of the year somewhat easier.

Edit : I spent so long typing this that I DID NOT See Wonderboy's post (Had to post seeing as he picked pretty much the same starting 11  well 10 - Suso v Pacheco)
