He can play both wings? What are you gonna do with Heighway?

Play him on the right and move Brian Hall inside. Mike Marsh's best position was RB IMO.

BTW, you pick in front of me next.

Fantastic pick I have to say. He sounds like he was a genuine superstar of his time.

When Steve Heighway played amateur football he was a flying left winger for Skelmersdale United in the late 1960's. I was about 12-13 years old at the time and we used to watch Skem all the time. We used to stand up against the railings of that tight little ground watching Heighway tear the opposing full back to pieces, just a few feet away, and I mean pieces. He was lightning quick. Considering that he went from Skem practially into Liverpool's first team gives you an idea just how much he mullered to opposing defence.

Once, in 1969 I think it was, we went to watch Skem play in the Amateur Cup quarter finals away at Enfield in north London. We were losing 1-0 when Heighway picked the ball up in field and on a pitch deep in mud, hit one from about 25 yards which flew into the net. Shortly after they took him off and that was the last time he ever played for Skem. We went on to win the game 2-1.

One of the grat things about Heighway was his consistency. I was brought up on Peter Thompson who on his day was - well un-playable. But he did have his off days.

Not very many of those fron Steve.

Actually this is THE best thread I've ever seen on RAWK so top marks to Sarge and the others that have helped him with it. It's going to be a monster once the voting starts and the information for the younger supporters on our great players from the recent and distant past is a great way to educate people.

I take my hat of to you Sarge, a fantastic effort.

I'd probably say this is my favourite and most addictive thread of all time on RAWK. Nice timing sarge I've 2000 words to do for my dissertation by Wednesday morning :no

Cheers lads but i'm having a great time and i just hope RAWK joins in the voting now.

I'm not sure whether it was against NI or the republic but Peter Thompson had one of his un-stoppable days.

He totally skinned the RB.

They doubled up on him.

He totally skinned those two.

They sent another one over there.

There was so much space left elsewhere the rest of the team held a party.

This is true.

My mate owns the red number 7 shirt that Kenny wore when he scored the winner in the European Cup final in 1978 at Wembley. He won it in a raffle for a £5 ticket. It's kept in a safety deposit box in a bank and when he dies he's going to get buried in it. Apparently, once someone offered him £20,000 for it.

By the way, whats the plan for the voting Sarge?

Are we submitting our teams over on the main board for a poll vote?

OK, just picked... honest... I didn't see that post on here a while ago... ;D

We're moving fast now...

1st sub technically but possibly a first team pick, cos I hadn't looked into his background beforehand... not before the little 'extra' post on the chat thread an hour or two ago anyway. ;D

Donald Mackinlay

Quotes and info taken from here:
http://www.lfchistory.net/player_articles_view.asp?article_id=2237&player_id=899

He captained Liverpool for seven years, including the successive titles in 1922 and 1923, and was an uncompromising defender who could play in multiple positions.

But not only that. He scored goals. In all he scored 34 goals in 434 games, which is none too shabby, and handily he scored a lot of goals from free kicks around the box. Last but not least... he once scored an Alonso-style pearler from ten yards inside his own half against West Ham.

Quote
Leslie Edwards, the sports editor of the Liverpool Daily Post and Echo, saw the Liverpool greats first hand and he couldn't praise MacKinlay's abilities highly enough: "Don MacKinlay skippered Liverpool to their Championship in the 1920s. He appeared in half a dozen different positions but the thing I remember most was his skill with a free kick. If I was leaving with a message and Liverpool had been awarded a free kick, I would wait until it had been taken because I knew anything could happen. He hit the ball with terrific power but also had a remarkable touch."

Later, in 1922...

Quote
"In the matter of shooting nothing is more remarkable than the way Donald McKinlay continues to score goals. He has scored from outside left, right back, left back, and left half-back, but in later seasons he has figured at left-back, and he has this season piloted a lot of free kicks beyond the goalkeeper. It must be a record for a full back not taking penalty kicks to have scored so many goals in a season in the ordinary run of play."

All of which means he'll make the right back slot his own and relegate Dunlop to the bench... or possibly Ziege - I'm not sure - Mackinlay played several seasons at left back too (as well as several midfield positions. It looks like someone is going to have to make way for this fella.

He'd also be the kind of leader Roy's teams were crying out for to add steel and tactical nous to the fancy-dannery. Here's a quote from him.

Quote
"Generally today captains do not have sufficient reponsibility. It seems to me that all they do is to take the team out and toss the coin. There’s not enough directing and you hardly hear them shout instructions. In my day I had full control on the field and if there was any decision on changing of positions, I took it. I am speaking generally and not individually, but captains today are not what they used to be. I told my players: ‘If I have to say anything to you, answer me back and don’t start sulking’."

Last but not least, when asked to pick his World X1 after his career, he named one Bill Shankly in midfield (long before he took the manager's job at Anfield).

Bollocks. He was going to be my substitute  :-\

Anyways, I'd like to do like the others and thank you, Sarge, for a great job. It's been educational, challenging and entertaining.

My back up midfielder is

Danny Guthrie

Guthrie was released by Manchester United when he was at the tender age of 15. He made steady progress at Liverpool and finally was rewarded by a first team debut vs. Reading in the Carling Cup in October 2006. He is a good passer of the ball and a very attack minded player with an eye for goal.

Guthrie was loaned to Bolton in the 2007-2008 season and showed he was a Premier League player convincing Newcastle to buy him in the summer of 2008. The transfer, reported by Liverpool's website on 14th July, 2008 was believed to be for a fee of £2.25 million.

He only turns 22 in April and seems to improving steadily. Going to become a really good pro. Attack minded? - yes. But not afraid to get stuck in when required. Sad to see him go but he needed games. Seem to be saying that about a lot of youngsters.

Sarge - Could you add a pic for me. I wasn't aware of constraints on posting from History.Net.

Where do you get them from?
"Don't let your sense of morals prevent you from doing what's right."
"True knowledge exists in knowing that you know nothing."
"I have never met a man so ignorant that I couldn`t learn something from him."
"People who think they know everything are a great annoyance to those of us who do."

I wasn't gonna say it until the end of the whole thing, but yeah, it's been a distinct pleasure this. I've learned stuff I never even remotely knew about the club's history, and got a lot of nice memories along the way. I reckon it's also fertile ground for some great posts by the way - I'm definitely planning one on Warky for starters.

Cheers to you all and Sarge in particular :wave

I did mate, a quality read.

I have a load of old football annuals lying around the loft at my old dear's house and it's all Nat Lofthouse and Billy Wright. Liverpool never gets a look in.
