He had everything, but the one thing for me was his willingness to put that 'everything' on the line when it mattered to win the match. It's tricky for me to find the words, maybe that equaliser against West Ham sums it up. Most players pass that ball, but Gerrard knows we have to get the goal, he doesn't want to lose, he knows he can hit it better than everyone else, and he actively wants to be the hero, he's dreamt of that every night of his life, and as he connects with the ball he summons up every bit of knowledge from every shot he's ever hit in his life from Huyton to Melwood to Anfield to every other ground he's played at and the ball rockets into the back of the net and makes FA Cup history like something from the days of black-and-white. My point probably is, that most of the time that shot flies over the bar, even for the world's best players, and the game's over. Gerrard was prepared to take it on, all-or-nothing. Not many do that.
That's it for me. I apologise for the long sentence, but I hope something understandable can be gleaned from it. If not, who cares? Just remember the goal, that's the important thing.
Thanks for everything, Steven.
