As we enter the business end of the season, we end off Ianuarii horribilis with a match against the Log Leaders. Every scouser will be hoping that we turn them over, by hook or by crook, since that will allow us to see the positives rather than the negatives.

That said, win or lose tonight, it's time to rediscover the spirit that buoyed us over most of the first half of the season.

We've got the right manager to drive us forward and may well have to step back before surging forward.

Good hunting to the lads in red tonight.

0' - Kickoff by the reds after a rousing rendition of YNWA. Klopp with a huge smile on his face.

Liverpool move the ball foward, play some head ping pong and start working the ball. Goes to the back and comes back across to the right.

Within the first 2 minutes we're passing it around among the back three.

We move it forward into the Chelsea final third. Clyne unfortunately loses the ball but it's worked forward again for a corner.

3' - Coutinho took it short and Lallana floated it over - lands on a Chelsea head and cleared.

4' - Can with a through ball to Firmino along the left, but it's just too heavy.

Alonso gets an inadvertent elbow in the face from Gini. No harm done.

6' - Lovely little backheel from Phil to Milner and the ball is floated into the box. It's just behind Firmino and he lays it back.

Nothing comes of it but it was nice to see nonetheless.

8' - The lads are looking nice and sharp. Chelsea are very definitely playing to a plan and sit tight and deep.

Matip pushes a good ball forward to the edge of the box. Luiz reads it well and clears.

We have the ball again - Henderson and Milner with good interchanges in the box but the defense holds firm.

11' - Stunning takedown by Lallana, loses it, then recovers it again and lays it back to Gini who takes a shot and forces a save - an easy save but that was definitely on target.

12' - Costa goes down in the box claiming a push from Matip - ref has none of it and waves play on.

Replay confirms the ref made the correct call.

14' - Two throw-ins in quick succession and we press the ball off Chelsea on the second one.

Chelsea get the ball and push up - danger ball well read by Gini and we clear.

15' - Good quick passing the ball from back to front is somewhat undone as we give the ball to Chelsea in front of their box.

Ref goes over to chat to Conte - dunno what happened there but it ended with Klopp and Conte shaking hands and grinning at each other.

17' - Matip puts a tiny foot in on Costa who does down as if shot. Ref chats to Matip but nothing further.

Costa changes his injured boot and 'hobbles' back on.

Matip with sloppy pass resulting in a corner for Chelsea.

Corner is dealt with and Cahill caught offside.

21' - Moses gets the better of Milner but the cover defense cuts the pass out and it's a throw in to Chelsea.

22' - Phil a touch slow getting back and is caught offside - another yard forward and we might have been in business.

Hazard goes down 15 yards outside our box.

0-1 - David Luiz scores from the dead ball. Kicks it over the small wall and just inside the post.

Auxillary commies would like to know where the whistle was to restart play - TV comms don't seem to have noticed that.

Webb has apparently commented on that but no one else appears to have picked it up.

28' - Chelsea with another FK slightly further away.

Henderson is giving Clattenburg an earful and the commentators speak about the lack of a whistle.

Good kick but Luiz can't get on the end of it and Simon parries it away for a corner.

We break fast and then slow down again - Firmino loses the ball, they drive back but Mignolet is sharp and clears. Costa falls over with Matip close by but the ref is having none of it.

We press hard and Clyne puts a good ball into the box. Azpi gets to the ball first.

Meantime Luiz has gone down and looks to be subbed.

32' - Great delivery from the corner but Courtois gets hands to it in the traffic and hits it clear. Comes back in but to no avail.

We continue to press hard.

Luiz has stayed on but is moving rather gingerly

35' - Moses runs at us from the left and squeezes the ball across the box but Matip is there to clear.

40' - We continue to press hard and the crowd continue to keep up the support.

Coutinho delivers a good corner but Firmino can't get his head onto it. It's cleared and comes back in - offside.

That slowmo of the FK that Chelsea scored from clearly shows that Simon was not yet in place by the time the kick was taken.

No doubt that he was waiting for the whistle [edit: which the ultra slowmo shows the ref did blow it - he didn't look to see if Simon was ready, but that's not his job is it?]

46' - Courtois with a poor clearance the ball is worked into the box twice within a minute. No shot on goal though.

48' - huge chance gone abegging - the ball is moved forward really quickly and Clyne passes the ball across the face of the goal but Firmino shins it high - he really had time to take a touch and bury that.

Lallana had kicked the ball into a Chelsea player on the end of the box. Henderson picked up the rebound and dinked it to Milner in the box. Milner then got it across to Gini who headed it in from 7 yards or so

58' - The crowd absolutely erupted.

Milner goes into the book for a late tackle on Moses.

62' - FK 35 yards out on the left is passed to (I think) Firmino. Ball comes back and is lofted to Can on the far right - he takes a touch to put it on his left but kicks it into traffic.

He was offside anyway.

63' - We're working the ball into the box regularly. Milner goes down on the edge of the box - ref waves on and rightly so - that said, some reckon that Moses put his elbow into Milners back...

66' - Kante with good work in the middle of the park - gets the ball back twice after being dispossessed and eventually gets the ball to Willian in the box. He crosses it but it's hit too hard and a sliding Costa can't get to it.

69' - Game has opened up considerably - Henderson with good lofted pass which Coutinho brings under control - the Chelsea defense eventually snuff out the threat.

Minute later Can is in the box, onside, but can't bring the ball under control.

72' - Costa blown up - Milner delivers a good kick into the box but can't get a red head onto it.
