Windows Vista - Acer Laptop - HELP PLEASE
« on: January 3, 2017, 11:43:22 pm »
Ok so I've got some really important stuff on my laptop and today when i loaded it up it came back with this error message below:

Quote
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer
2. Check the language settings, and then click next
3. Click repair your computer

If you do not have this disc, contact your system admin or computer manufacturer for assistance.

File: \Windows\System32\Config|System
Status: 0xc00000e9

Info: Windows failed to load because the system registry file is missing, or corrupt

Now i dont have a windows vista or acer recovery disc (i've had the laptop for over 6 years)

I really really need to get some file off there, is there anyway of fixing this please??

someone please help, would be much appriciated  :'(

If you've got access to another PC, then download ubuntu and burn to disc or USB stick.
You should then be able to boot your laptop into Ubuntu using the disc/USB stick, and get access to your files on the hard drive.

Get a rescue boot CD. Copy the files you need.

With a machine of that age, assume the hard disk is failing and recover what you can as soon as you. Then if the repair options work, it is a bonus.

Probably not as it's another version of Windows.

If it's just complaining about the Registry then the File System is possibly intact meaning you could take the disk out and attach it as a slave to another pc - but it's a bit more complex as a laptop as you won't have a spare bay - and do you know if your file system is FAT32 or NTFS?

The laptop has always worked fine, it was working fine earlier today, it's just when i tried booting it up now its coming back with that message, safe mode etc isn't working either.

If i install a new windows 7 on there will it erase all my documents etc?

Acer have used built in recovery partitions rather than disks for a very long time. When you switch on and the Acer logo appears, press Alt + F10 and if there's a recovery partition then it will load the wizard which has options to restore the OS but maintain your files and folders.

As  the last person said, try the recovery partition first. If that doesn't work, you can use any Vista CD so long as it's the same version of Vista that you had on your machine previously. This is important to make sure that your product key works!

You'll probably want to look into either upgrading the OS on that laptop or else getting a new one, as Microsoft ends security support for Windows Vista this year. That means that it won't be secure from viruses and spyware, and would make it a lot more risky for using for Internet banking etc.

Second this.
