That's the best to get texts from them conceding Liverpool are OK. :champ

Everything in the second half seemed to hit the net

thought we were really gonna do it that season at that point. think chelsea lost at stoke the same day so we were only 3 off the top.

Ah... Torres hat-trick, Gerrard's cross turned into a goal (deliberate !) and Babel got two goals but one was a fluke.

Think Babel got a shock himself.

Hoping for similar numbers from our new incumbents.

Wonder what Luis will do for his hat-trick?

I remember going to the MyPa47 game. Anfield was alive with Patrik Berger fever, and he helped draw a bigger than expected crowd. It was just after we had beaten Chelsea on the saturday before when he had got a couple. He obliged with a goal, and I remember thinking we had signed a great player.
Unfortunately he didn't quite live up to his early promise.

He was bloody good that Torres lad wasn't he?

Am I remembering this right, was that 1978 Forest game the one where a young Chris Woods came in for Shilton and had an absolute blinder keeping them in the tie?

After having a cup of coffee I am now thinking that was a League Cup final.  Let this be a warning to you youngsters, every pint kills a thousand brain cells!
shilton was meant to have a blinder in the european game too.

as for the Everton game I was in florence for this. was 2 days after i had done best man for my brother there.

was a small wedding being in italy and there was only about 25 at it.

we had met up for a meal the night before but unfortunately my stomach just wasnt the best. was nothing to do with a hangover. we didnt drink much at the wedding because it was simply too dear, (was actually the same wedding venue used by David Bowie). it was 9 euro for a bottle of peroni (the same peroni that cost 70 cent in an off licence the night before). anyway i hadnt slept well as I left the meal early to go to bed early. unfortunately this was ruined by my sister returning with a bottle of wine and my Dad's snoring which would measure about 10 on the richter scale. so much for an early night.

as we were moving hotels due to some of the party heading home and off to other holidays places we kinda start moving in to each others hotel rooms to cut down on bills. whilst trying to find a spot to watch the match. as usual being on holiday i attempted to sniff out places where you would see an irish bar or a big blackboard outside with "games on here".

we eventually found this little tiny pizza place beside the bus station which was actually a lot bigger on the inside than it looked.

my brother and his new wife joined us while some of the others like my mam, my mrs and my sisters and neices went shopping. though we feared not being able to see the game when they returned 5 mins into the game having missed a train to wherever they were going. a few early chunks of pizza and few early peronis settled the nerves as we waited to see whether torres and keane could click.

after an uneventful first half we came to life in the second when a good run and cross by keane found torres free at the back post for 1-0. it was 2-0 just minutes later when torres thrashed in a second from close range when the ball broke loose. needless to say with it being the derby we gave it loads much to the bemusement of the locals. before we kinda nervously and perhaps more embarrassed than anything just sat down red faced. we almost did it again minutes later when torres was denied a hattrick by an offside flag or a foul by kuyt i cant remember which.

the game ended easily enough for us when everton gave up after cahill was sent off for a foul on alonso. 2-0 briefly put us top as we attempted to bribe a few of the wags by buying a couple of slices of pizza. was really so we could see chelsea on after us. i cant remember who they were playing but it was when phil scolari managed them. and in the early part of that season rafas red and big phils blues often traded the lead. possibly against wigan but who knows. the season had been up and running superbly well.

i cant quite remember much of the afternoon, we had been taken it easy i think i remember setting up a dvd for the youngsters to watch. as we were in florence my brother had been looking up fixtures so in serie a that night fiorentina were hosting genoa.

the ticketing procedures were quite strict so when he tried for 6 tickets at the ticket office a few days before he was asked for 6 passports? however the game was unlikely to sell out so we decided to chance it on the day. my mrs wasnt interested in going and i dont think she was part of the original 6. my dad and brother in law on the trip also decided to leave it so my brother and his new wife headed out with her brother and me to watch it.

the security seemed very strict around the ground with passports often produced along with tickets. as we entered the ground we thought it was cool to see your name flash up when your ticket was scanned. but what really surprised us was after all the security checks, once we got in , we could sit where we wanted! bit strange after all the security.

the match itself was really crap. genoa hardly came out of their own half all game and the first half ended with us watching it from up in the gods. the second half we decided to go on the move seen as we were up in the gods and we thought we would head down where there was a bit of atmosphere. the fiorentina fans didnt bother us and we had a pretty decent view of Gilardino scoring the games only goal after about an hour. Gilardino promptly did his knee celebrating, the twonk.

i dont remember much else although the most notable players were montilivio and adrian mutu. i think per kroldrup might have played too and possibly sebastien frey. genoa however never looked like scoring and it ended 1-0. it was a good experience to see serie a first hand.

we finished the night off with a couple of quick pints in a little street bar which was largely empty and retreated to bed for the night. it was something different i suppose ,,,,,,but Liverpool beating everton is nothing new, and its nothing to get tired of either.

it was a nice end to a period i will always remember as being the time my brother allowed me to be his best man. this time of the year will always remind me of that.

that game against the bitters in 99 was on a monday night wasn't it? i remember it because it was my first full day at uni and coincidentally my flatmate happened to be a blue. kevin campbell scored early on but it's probably more remembered for the punch up between westerveld and jeffers.

that 2-1 defeat at west ham in 97 included one of the sweetest volleyed goals you'll ever see from fowler. just majestic.

Yes it was a Monday night. Gerrard also saw red for attempting to castrate Kevin Campbell. Staunton made a great save in goal as well! I remember this for the aftermath more than anything. As a crazy student (or not, pretty tame really) three of us Reds drowned our sorrows and ended up back at a mate's flat to try his newly ordered bottle of absinthe. He told us to have a couple of shots and wait half an hour for it to kick in. Well half an hour later he was spark out and me and my mate walked home thinking it was all quite tame.

Woke up the next morning with a wheelbarrow and pelican crossing light in my room.

That Charlton game was utterly dispiriting. A Kevin Lisbie hat-trick. Kevin Lisbie?!

We'd started that season playing some nice stuff but the results weren't really going our way and this just summed it up. I think we played Owen up top with Kewell, Smicer and Diouf in behind him. We should have cruised it but kept shooting ourselves in the foot. Lisbie won it late on by winning a 50/50 with Finnan ("he's useless, get rid etc etc"!) and curling home the winner.

best memory i have i spose is the midgets hattrick

rapid bucharest game was dreadful , think i fell asleep. think diomede actually played, olympiakos i dont think we even had a shot all game. chelsea match was a bore too

thing most headwrecking with chelsea actually, had arranged to meet mates. of course me dad rings me 20 mins before the game as im literally about to walk out the door and hes looking for a lift home.

told him repeatedly "im in a hurry and i want to watch the game, ill be there in 10 mins DONT GET ANOTHER DRINK im in a hurry"

timed it so i could get him, go home and run for the pub and i would have been on time

10 mins later, i walk in to pick him up. of course hes sitting there with a full pint. missed the start of it.

Kevin Lisbie's career highlight on this day! Had forgotten all about that. Think Owen scored that hat-trick after being in for some stick as he hadnt scored in about 4 games

Remember that as being the first game where we really looked like we'd replaced Souness.  In the previous season, despite finishing second and reaching the European Cup Final, we never seemed to get to grips with his absence - Molby took time to bed in, MacDonald was never really up to the job and Wark's game was more about ghosting into the box rather than controlling the play.

The Molby and McMahon pairing took off in that game - it just seemed to really gel for the first time. Molby showed that he had the skill to carry the ball and the vision to use it, McMahon was the steel protecting the defence.  We looked like a team gone stale towards the end of Fagan's time; this marked the point for me where Dalglish set down a marker for the future and changed the dynamic of the team. Didn't turn out too bad, really.

Were Molby and McMahon the preferred midfield partnership for the season then? I only remember the Cup Final from that season where I think Macca was a sub (unless he was injured and missing altogether?). Who played central midfield alongside Molby that day, Whelan? Or Kevin Macdonald?

McMahon got injured towards the end of the season and MacDonald came in. He did ok but was severely limited in what he could bring to the table. We were on a winning run so Kenny kept the team unchanged when McMahon got back to fitness and he stayed on the bench in the Cup Final, with MacDonald alongside Molby (actually, he played quite an advanced role if I remember correctly) and Whelan on the left.  It wasn't till Barnes came that Whelan moved into the centre on a regular basis.

Were Molby and McMahon the preferred midfield partnership for the season then? I only remember the Cup Final from that season where I think Macca was a sub (unless he was injured and missing altogether?). Who played central midfield alongside Molby that day, Whelan? Or Kevin Macdonald?
think whelan mainly played on the left that season, and stayed there til barnes arrived. kind of like when meireles used to play there at the end of last season

cup final team i think was
                                 brucie
                    nicol lawro jockey beglin
             johnston molby mcdonald whelan
                              dalglish
                                  rush

sub (unused) mcmahon

dalglish was probably used a lot deeper that game, almost a 5 man midfield. i watched it on dvd there a couple of years back. dalglish sat back a lot and mcdonald actually made a lot of great runs into the box at the start of the match. first 20 mins he was probably our most dangerous player.

Cheers boys. With a lack of live games on TV back then I can only remember the Cup Final (plus maybe Chelsea away in the cup) being on TV. I also got taken to a 5-0 v Birmingham (Gary Gillespie hat-trick!) but I'll have to sit tight until April/May time before unleashing that one.

I'll never forget that glorious summer's evening when I stuck on Ceefax and saw the headline "Liverpool swoop for Leonhardsen".

I think the select few who keep posting in this thread enjoy it, better than nothing I guess!

that chelsea match was one of the worst games of football i've seen. barely a shot from either side. 4 days later they came back to anfield and stuffed us 4-1.

I'm going to post every day. Whole idea was to create a post a game on its anniversary, share a memory type thingy.
Any suggestions, HELLRAZOR?

Think Owen scored that hat-trick after being in for some stick as he hadnt scored in about 4 games

12 hours and 20 minutes apparently. check out gerrard's ball for the third goal!

I went to that City away game. sat/stood in that temporary corner stand they built at Maine Road. At that point in the season we were doing very well, winning every week. But the wheels came off spectacularly soon after; I think we beat Leeds away soon after and went top. We barely won a game in the winter, and finished well outside the top 4.

Olympiacos in 2004 was, aside from Istanbul, the best European away I've been on. Just goes to show the match result doesn't always have much bearing on whether it's a great trip or not.

The first bonus was the hotel - despite being a £20-a-night cheapie, we found out it had a small pool up on the roof and, as it was warm & sunny, we put sight-seeing on hold for a while, stocked up on a few cans & spent a couple of hours drinking & sun-bathing & enjoying the views across Athens. Perfect way to unwind after the early morning flight.

This was the day before the match, so later that afternoon we headed off to see some of the sights of Athens, the Acropolis etc, then jumped on a train down to Pireaus to have a look at the stadium and pay our respects at the Gate 7 memorial. We tied a couple of Liverpool scarves to the memorial there (including my pride & joy first ever scarf with "Record Eleven Times Champions" and a printed image of a very young Kenny on it!) and got chatting to a Gate 7 supporter who invited us over to their supporters club and gave us each a Gate 7 supporters club t-shirt with "We're back" written on it. Spent a bit of time there chatting with their fans and left with a warm glow of euro away friendship, the best kind of feeling.

Back at the stadium, we had a walk round the ground & bought a few souvenirs in the club shop, then as we were passing by the main entrance, a big group of people were being ushered into the stadium. There was no time for discussion & everyone had the same idea anyway, so within seconds we'd tagged on the end and in we went. Inside, we turned left, trying not to look at the security guard behind the desk and followed a few of the group into a lift. I'm not sure what we thought we were doing, but it all happened so quick there was no going back. When the lift opened we were in a bar with these big glass windows overlooking the pitch on which Rafa was deep in conversation with Harry Kewell (maybe he was telling him he was going to be on the bench!). The rest of the team were going through their training session paces and we just stood there watching with beers in our hands laughing our heads off at how easy it had been to get in.

Match day didn't start off quite as good for me. We went up on the roof for a morning swim and I managed to kick a floor tile that was sticking up and sliced part of my foot off. Blood everywhere I hopped back to the room and got it cleaned up. The lads were off to see the Olympic stadium, but I had to stay behind to save my foot for the match.

When they returned we went off into town and had the usual pre-match belly filler with copious amounts of rough wine. I can't remember the next few hours too clearly, but I know at one point we found ourselves in the Hellenic Liverpool supporters club watching re-runs of old Liverpool matches. I think we'd been invited there by a Greek Liverpool fan we met ina bar, but we didn't stay too long as watching old re-runs of matches on the telly wasn't really what we wanted at that point.

Outside the ground, an embarrassing (and potentially match-missing) incident. I'd stuck a small 5cl bottle of ouzo down my shorts for match refreshments & just as I got to the turnstiles, stood right next to a few of the Merseyside constabulary who were there on duty, the bloody thing fell out & smashed on the floor. Luckily for me, all I got was a few 'looks' off them and hurried into the ground.

Oh yeah, and the match itself. Erm, we lost one nil.

Good on yer, I love this thread and i've read it every day, even though for the last few days my memory has let me down on the games.  Should get my bro to register on RAWK he has a frighteningly compendious memory for every game we've been too.

I am finding that the aways stick in my head a bit better, something about the regular routine of the home games that erases them from my memory

WILLIAM ''BILL'' SHANKLY, OBE. 2th September 1913 -- 29 September 1981

Been on the receiving end of a few head butts over the years following this Club. When we first heard that Shanks was ill and in hospital, I made a pre-emptive comment. Older brother dished out the usual punishment. We knew Bill was a fighter, didn't we?

To this day I can still hear his distraught voice with the message 'He's gone'.

No need to ask who. Our most loyal and loved Manager had passed. How did you hear the news?

Tell me about your feelings of this great man and the part he plays to this day in our lives?

R.I.P. Bill
