I have given up chewing tobacco a number of times in my life and always gone back.  I always have found the first few days easy, even the first month. It is when it quitting the stuff stops becoming my main priority and I think I am passed it.  Then I have a strong urge and a single moment of weakness and get right back on it.

My point is that the urges will come eventually, even if it is months from now when you are drunk or having a bad day at work or school.  Some trigger will set you off.  Those are the times you have  to stick to your guns and fight through.  Good luck man.

Quit using Champix back in June. Worked amazing for me, I had lost all the urge to smoke. I only took it for about three weeks as well; the full course they give you lasts a few months if I can recall.

Anyways I had smoked from about the age of 15 until 29. Never really affected me health negatively that I could tell. Still played sports (hockey, football), ran, surfed and did everything fine, was never short of breath. I basically quit because I knew it was taking a toll on my body regardless of how much wind I still had. That and I can be quite a vain bastard. I was seriously worried about the pre-mature aging, wrinkles and all that.

I've been relatively smoke free since June. I will admit I still do break down when I am on the piss and I have a few fags. About 20-30 in total since June I guess.

The best thing is I have no desire to smoke in situations where I was previously devouring them  ie. work, driving, before/after a surf. It feels great to no longer smell like ass, my gf is off my back and I've noticed I've got more money to spend on the piss (maybe not a good thing I guess :D)

I'd congratulate you but you're a quitter! People who commit suicide don't get a pat on the back for quitting on life.

At the end of the day you've made a commitment and you've welched on it. :(

Ford's not actually my surname anymore as I legally changed my name. I just can't be arsed changing my name on here. I was born in 87 though.

Stopped just over 3 months ago cold turkey and its not been hard at all.

For me then secret was to sit down and think long and hard about why I smoked and whether I actually enjoyed it enough to continue, as opposed to smoked because its what I always did (BTW I would only ever smoke on the weekend when I was out on the beers).

Once I made the decision that I didn't want to smoke anymore, it was a lot easier than I thought it would be, specially the first weekend where I went out boozing with the lads.

I quit smoking at the end of august for the 4th time i think. It's an utter c*nt to do because smoking goes hand in hand with most of the things i enjoy doing, especially going for a pint or 12. I smoked for 15 years and it's the habit, it's not the nicotine at all. Booze saps most of my willpower for quitting because it's so totally unnatural to have a pint without a smoke and no the smoking ban doesn't help. The first time i gave up i had to avoid the pub. I made it 4 months without going and then caved after the 6th pint.

But i'm doing a lot better this time around and hopefully can stick it out for good cos i hate smoking, makes me feel like shit and smell like an utter twat. For those of you that use nicotinell gum, fair play, i don't know how you do, generally tastes like ashtrays the last time i tried it and i refuse to use the patches full stop.

Best of luck to all you quitters out there!!!
And when you find yourself along the untrodden path
Remember me with a smile, a drink, a gesture or a laugh
And a toast for the man who loves every hour of every day
And a feast for the friends and faces met along way
Gratitude

Anyone who is trying to quit smoking but is struggling a bit, you should read Allen Carr's "Easyway to Quit Smoking."

I was unsure at first, but I have gone from a pack a day to zero. I havent had one in 3 weeks now and Ive never felt better. I stopped having cravings after the first day and now the smell of smoke repulses me.

Good luck to everyone quitting. Remember its not going to be as hard as you think and you can quit as long as you really want to.

quit smoking cold turkey 2 months ago. The first couple days were bad but the positives far outweigh the negatives(Obviously) after 6 years. Feel better, food tastes better, sleeping better. Now I don't want anything to do with the little fuckers.

Worked for me.

I'd done hypnotherapy, patches and will power unsuccessfully.

Was on thirty a day and had smoked for fifteen years.

After my tenth day on this I smoked my last cigarette.

I smoked between 40 and 50 a day - more sometimes. Anyway I decided to quit and it's been 3 days without a fag now. It's fucking murder sometimes, but I'm coping reasonably well most of the time.

I've also decided to eat healthier and I'm doing a weights routine as well. Don't know how long it will last, but I feel determined. :wave

This is what the medication helped with.

You dont suffer that much - it controls your cravings.

Can honestly say I had about three days in six months where I craved hard and that was it.

I'm using the patches, I hadn't heard of Champix.

Still 3 days is an achievement of sorts and it gets easier anyway, so I'm just gonna ride the pain.

Tried on NY.

Lasted about 4 days. My problem is that i can't completely give up. I smoke 6/7 joints a day before taking into account ciggies smoked during the day. For me to go from that to 0, would kill me.

I know a few people that are on it. They say it is fantastic to stop the cravings. However they can make you feel a bit sick.

Especially if you smoke while you are on them..

Also, I think the deal is you take one in the morning and one in the afternoon. My mate the other day forgot to take his one in the morning and he took 2 in the afternoon and he was yaking all night from it.

Going cold turkey is the only way to go though

No, just tobacco.

I heard that Champix stuff had bad side effects??

Didn't have any myself other than them turning my stomach on a few occassions but it didn't make me throw up.

Also, I think the deal is you take one in the morning and one in the afternoon. My mate the other day forgot to take his one in the morning and he took 2 in the afternoon and he was yaking all night from it.

Silly move on you mates behalf as it clearly tells you not to do this if you miss a tablet

I agree, I'd rather just stick with will power ;D

Good luck. I can only tell you what my doctor told me and she has an 80% success rate with it and how easy I found it to give up having smoked for so long by using it.

I have another mate who was on the champix. He was on them for about 4 months. He thought he was no longer addicted so he stopped taking them. 1 week later he is back on a pack a day. Poor bugger.

Willpower is the best way to go I think, as long as you want to quit and you convince yourself that you have had your last ciggie, then you can do it.

Its been three weeks cold turkey for me now and I havent had a single craving.

Just thought I would share my experiences - Gave up last Monday; went to the quack (smoking cessation nurse) had a check up and all that; explained that I was more than ready to give up etc...
She deicided to put me on the program of patches and an inhalator...
Well, 8/9 days later - no ciggies at all, not touched the patches or inhalator etc - Have had cravings etc, have been in social situations etc but I am finding it easier now to ignore the craving...Was with friends on Saturday and could smell it on them and their clothes - it smelt horrible!
Was in a car with 3 smokers most of yesterday - god it was making me sick!!
So, personally I think that I have at last got it right (3rd attempt at quiting); timing seems right, my health has suffered recently, cost implications, kids etc all things that contributed to my decision to quit...
Not saying im over it totally lol - long way to go I believe, but I am well happy with my progress so far.  For me the hardest things are finding summat to do when craving creeps in etc...
20 a day for 20 years no more!!!!
All the best to everyone else out there trying to kick it - persevere!!!
