Hope Ings doesn't end up as this season's Lambert.

Should play him on the wing. WingDings.

Absolutely crucial, if we blow this one we're done as a top team, this is an unbelievable chance to return to our perch, we must be patient.

unfortunate not to score tonight, looked decent off the bench and probably would have done alot better job as Origi through the middle.

His first action was to almost slip in Lallana following a throw-in, and then he almost scored a goal after a sublime take down and second touch. That take down to set himself up would have had half of rawk jizzing if it was Coutinho, Sturridge, or even Suarez. Top bit of skill but shame he couldn't finish. He'll probably be working twice as hard in training on his finishing this week though due to that miss so that might be a silver lining :)

He seems a live wire and works his arse off. The more I see of him the more I'm impressed with him. If he keeps on progressing and putting in the effort I can see him scoring a few vital goals for us off the bench this season. He reminds me of a Hernandez type player.
Having Welbeck try and mark Pirlo is ridiculous. It's like trying to get a golden retriever to stop a tennis ball machine.Because one is a machine designed for a very specific purpose that it is peerless at, and the other is a fucking dog.

Looked 10 times better than Origi when he came on, looked hungry for it and very unlucky not to score, excellent first touch but weak finish.

I actually think he is a good backup, his form last year if in any way replicated would really help us.

needs to be played more central. great technique for his chance but a poor finish.

i would like to see him upfront with benteke (and not shunted to the left wing)

I think that second touch has largely gone amiss, it was so neat it was as vital as the take-down. I just wish he'd have put his boot through the ball.

When he was chasing one of the balls down on the wing in the second half, did you see the determination on his kipper?

This lad has got your back Brendan, start him at Anfield against Norwich please.

I think it was the logical finish in that situation, but the keeper speculated well and probably both players were aware that he had just been beaten on the far side. I think it was more down to good goalkeeping and less the finish of Ings. Him upfront with Benteke would be a very good and exciting combination, I agree.

I always wonder why more strikers don't try to lift the ball high into the near post area from Ings' position yesterday. The moment a striker shapes for a shot from that angle, keepers inevitably expect a far post curler and dive that side, relying on their feet to save a near post shot. Put it about shoulder height or higher at the near post and its a goal every single time.

It's a funny one with Ings, because he's almost in a situation where he's won the lottery but can't cash the cheque. Most importantly though, he looks like he does actually give a fuck - that control and shot last night were excellent. Once he gets his first goal he'll be absolutely fine. He could end up being crucial to a good cup run.

Maybe, maybe not. He could have gone for power, which might have been the better option, or lift the ball half way, but in a split second he made a decision that brought a good save from the keeper. The keepers are not helpless in such situations - they get ready for a dive to the far corner and spread themselves big, and that covers 80% of the goal. As someone above said, there are a few spots where strikers score more often, but there is a reason why these shots are not taken as often.

I thought Ings would've been worth a start against Bordeaux, no doubt he'd have been up for it.  He's more of a known quantity than Origi and known for his tenacity and workrate which are not bad ingredients for an away fixture you'd like to win but wouldn't cry if you took a point.  I guess Origi's time in France and familiarity with the environment and opponents might have swayed BR but that could be seen to work either way.

I wasn't thrilled by his signing but I'd like to see Ings given a fair crack at playing off/around Benteke.  Benteke is capable of occupying defenders and bringing others into play but he's been regrettably isolated.  Ings has the workrate to get into attacking positions but he can also contribute by defending from the front.  For me Ings would probably be competing with Firmino for a starting spot in the short term.  We've got no way of knowing how promising Firmino is looking in training, but whoever starts I'd be telling them to give it hell for an hour with a view to subbing the other on with fresh legs.  I realise BR may yet play Benteke in a Todd Malone role, but I don't want to see that again as a plan A unless our style of play is radically altered to suit with plenty of runners breaking forward from midfield and I don't think we've got the pace for that.

Really excellent. Ran his arse off and brought some quality along with it. If he gets sharper as the season goes on and adds just half a yard of pace, he'll be superb. As it is, he's been good. Excellent goal.
Quote from: Dion Fanning

The chants for Kenny Dalglish that were heard again on Wednesday do not necessarily mean that the fans see him as the saviour. This is not Newcastle, longing for the return of Kevin Keegan. Simply, Dalglish represents everything Hodgson is not and, in fairness, everything Hodgson could or would not hope to be.

He should start infront of Benteke if we refuse to play to Bentekes strengths. Love his running & attitude but seeing how he changes the game when on makes me think we should have signed a top striker with pace this summer.

What a shame that this lad will be resigned to crumbs coming off the bench given the grit and determination he showed.

Not only that but his intelligent running , movement, and his goal showed his quality.

A shame.
