Does Luis Garcia count as a legend or could have been one?

It's a tough one isn't it? You'd like to think that all of the 2005 Cup winning boys could be considered as legends, but I think that goes some way to dilute it's status. How can you have Kenny, Rush and Luis Garcia in the same bracket?

Perhaps there is another tier for players like Luis. Perhaps 'folk hero' or something like that.
I think the same, can't stand him, but if you could have a £1million pound cheque or steve bruces head hollowed out and filled with pound coins which would you have?

I consider Alonso a legend...he was here long enough and did so much for our club. I think the two guys from my time of watching Liverpool would probably have to be Macscherano and Torres. Mascherano is a great players and one of the best at his position in the world. I just wish Torres stayed a little bit longer.

Mascherano is a good call. He had a big impact but didn't stay long enough to cement his position as a legend. He was a key figure within the squad and the fans adored him. Same with Torres. Neither of them won anything but played some amazing footy while they were here.

A mention for Steve Staunton-sold by two liverpool managers and never replaced by anyone close to being as good as him.Should have been our first choice left back for 10 years plus.

Gone through 6 pages and only seen the mention of Dudek once, obviously he's not up there with the likes of Rush, Dalglish, et al. But on the basis of the arguments over the fifth cup and who made it possible (garcia etc), surely he's in with a mention?

Or is there a glaringly obvious reason i've missed. As with Shevchenko ha!

The thread isnt here to point out legends, it's here to point out players THAT COULD HAVE BEEN LEGENDS, if circumstances had been different.
I think he has a point. If we include players with the ability of Mellor or Warnock, then it's a quite pointless even discussing the topic (some might say it's pointless regardless, but I think it's a bit of fun). I mean, in what extraordinary circumstances could Mellor, for example, have become a legend?

You could make a case for every single Liverpool player then, but I thought this was about those player who had the ability, but for other reasons didn't quite reach the heights we had hoped. Rob Jones for example, was an outstanding player, only hampered by injuries. Had he continued at the level he showed in his first few years, I have no doubt he would've been a legend. But Mellor? Or Warnock? Or Meijer?

Owen, Babbel, Litmanen, Anelka, Morientes, Alonso, Mascherano, Torres,...

Would have to go for the last three as they became real big players at LFC, when we were close to a real peak. Will always remember what they did, but they could have become real legends.

We saw Owen's prime and in a few more years I think he'll be considered a legend for us.
2001 triple and the league cup in 2003 - he was hugely important in those.

Nah, I don't think Owen will ever be considered a true Legend. And it's not without regret that I say that.

He's an unusual one though, in that his failure to be a legend has nothing to do with how he performed for Liverpool (or for how long).
Rather, it was the manner of his departure and his actions ever since.
He burnt his bridges, then circled back around and pissed all over the charred remnants.

It's a pity really. I was born in 1988, and as a kid he was my hero.
And his stats are pretty impressive. 158 goals in 297 appearances in all comps, 118 in 216 in the league.
He's 7th in the all-time scorer list, at one time he was our all-time top scorer in Europe (having since been replaced by Gerrard).
He was top scorer at the club 7 years in a row.
Plus, as you say he was instrumental in the 2001 treble, and winning the 2003 League Cup.

At the time, I though it odd, the way the crowd never seemed to take him to the same way that it need for many other players.
Looking back, it seems that maybe others could see what perhaps my idolatry blinded me to - it was never about the club, it was about him.
And that's why he can never truly be a legend.

I haven't read the whole thread but when you say 'in conjunction' I'm presuming fans have done the same as me (I posted earlier in the thread) and picked out players they saw potential to be legends - ie for me in recent history Torres. I agree that some mentions are puzzling - ie in your list Warnock (frankly, bizarre) but I think you're being a tad harsh on fans' hypothetical fantasies.

As for a guideline to legends, altho that wasn't the purpose of it, here's a few

Does Luis Garcia count as a legend or could have been one?

I would have loved to have seen Garcia and Torres play together.
Reckon Garcia would have been a legend with a couple seasons of them together.

Not a legend, see no reason he couldn't be considered as a 'could've been'

Craig Bellamy. Still the chance there, but you look at him and wonder why we didn't end up having 6-7 years out of him.

Yossi Benayoun - should've seen an awful lot more of him than we did. Managers have their favourites though. I'd have had him starting every week myself. Always had something about him. Not just quality-wise, but some of the moments he'd pick as well.

Anelka, Litmanen, Kewell.

Rafa said he didn't want to get rid of bellamy but had to sell him to get torres - let's be honest, he wouldn't have produced what torres did before he fucked off (okay, last 18 months were tarnished by injury etc but rafa did right at the time)

Not true, he was on his way to the top end of the legend bracket (see brackets below). In time he'll still be seen as a legend albeit a tainted one.

How can you have Kenny, Rush and Luis Garcia in the same bracket?

Depends how big the bracket is.

Played for liverpool - big bracket.
Had more good than bad moments in and LFC shirt - smaller bracket.
Gave me some of my happiest memories of the club - legends bracket.
Amongst the best to play for the club - top end of the legends bracket.
Kenny Dalglish - In his own bracket.

Goodbye & thank you Rafa. You've given us more than we ever had a right to expect from you and you stayed loyal and fought for us even when some of our own turned on you. I truly hope that you find somewhere with the support that you deserve & win everything in sight.

Wasn't the only striker at the club is all I'll say. I wouldn't have argued with him selling Bellamy at the time over Kuyt or Crouch, but I guess that says something for what Rafa managed to get out of Bellamy.

Also, people always say we got rid of him for Torres. You can equally say we got rid of Bellamy and brought in Ryan Babel. Just sayin'...

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but we wasted Bellamy first time out and we missed out on 5 years of someone who has shown they can be a top class player.
