When we were competing on all fronts under Rafa I remember we could field a completely different starting 11 and still have it be fairly competent. With Champions League football now on the horizon that's what we need, we need to be able to field a completely different 11 and feel comfortable that they're capable of getting the job done.

Mignolet/Signing

Johnson/Signing - Skrtel/Signing - Agger/Sakho - Flanno/Signing

Lucas/Gerrard - Allen/Henderson

Coutinho/Suso

Sterling/Borini - Suarez/Signing - Sturridge/Signing

If Barca appeal their ban successfully we could go in for Valdes. Coleman would obviously be a brilliant signing for right back but Everton would be very reluctant to sell. We've been linked with Coentrao for a while so he could be a target for left back. Konoplyanka and Adam Lallana would be great for the two up top signings. Imagine going into next season with a squad of that strength.

Hmmm I don't know mate. Our starting 11 is fantastic but going into a 50-60 game season with this squad would be suicide. Ayre has just come out and said we'll probably see a very different squad next season than this and I can see the logic in that thinking. We'll be found out for lack of depth if we're playing an extra 15-20 games next year.

I'm normally a big fan of cohesion and not making too many changes to a squad but when you're playing that many extra games I think it's a necessity. As long as we keep the same key players and the same spine to the team I don't think it'll disrupt things too much.

Transfer window thread hasn't opened yet and some absurd suggestions by you anyway :wave
We can think absurdly if we go into next season as league champions, with one of the youngest squads in the league, and a manager who has turned every young player with potential to gold. We play some of the most exciting football in Europe, and our atmosphere is slowly being restored to its once grand self. With those famous European nights coming back to Anfield everyone is going to want to play for us. FSG have money to spend, they've shown that with the Red Sox. I honestly believe we will be making some big statements of intent this summer.

Edit: Also I'm not saying we'll go out and sign all those players. It would be madness to suggest I could predict every one of our signings. Might as well put the lottery numbers up while I'm at it. The first part is me simply identifying the weakest areas in the squad and the second I'm just saying that some of these players would be a good option to approach, they are the standard of players we should be aiming for, and they would work well in our current squad, but they are by no means the only options out there.

It will be interesting to see how Rodgers/this team does against European opposition.

With Brendan only having limited European managerial experience, that being the Europa league. It will be interesting too see how we fair, he's a continental style coach anyway so I have no doubt were going to light all four corners of Europe up once again. I just cant wait....fuck the world cup!!!

I'll be happy if we don't spend in squad players. We have plenty.

We should go for 2 stellar players, ideally 1 versatile midfielder who can play AM and a solid right back to rotate with Johnson. I wouldn't rule out getting well established players like say Rakitic. We can try developing Suso, Dunn, McLaughlin, Wisdom, etc looking further ahead.

Going for 8-10M players that won't start would be a real waste.

Not trying to make this into a transfer thread though.

Sigurdson must be gutted. He said before our last game vs Spurs that he didn't regret it, but that's exactly what a person who regrets it would say. With United looking to get a top manager again and you'd expect Everton to strengthen further, Champions League football looks pretty unreachable for Spurs

We're likely to get a 'tough' group, but I'm thinking not too many of the big guns would fancy us from Pot 3 either, fantastic to have these games again. As has been mentioned, whatever happens with the title race, it's target achieved for the season, now just relax and see.

Sigurdsson should be grateful that he's earning £55k as a direct result of the form he enjoyed under Rodgers' management. He should also be grateful that he's earning that much at a club where he still has a decent shot at getting games next season.

I guess that's a way of looking at it.

I think he could have featured a decent amount of times for us even with our superior quality to Spurs. Granted he has looked a bit lackluster despite his odd spell of good form but Rodgers would have turned him into a better player than we're seeing atm. I still think there's a player in there somewhere but obviously now with where we are we'll be looking at a higher caliber of player.

He would have been useful in 2012/13, but he lacks the pace and fitness levels for our current style of play. And on the ball, he's very one dimensional. His technique is great when he has time to line up a shot or pass, but he's not going to get that at a big side unless he's moved into a deeper position... but he simply lacks nearly every quality necessary to play anything resembling a holding role. He'll do well when he eventually gets sold to Stoke or West Brom where he'll be able to sit behind the striker and work inside huge gulfs of space, but he's made to be the star of a mid-table club, not a squad player for a title contender.

In any case, he shouldn't have any regrets. If he was good enough, Spurs would have qualified for the CL when they had Bale, but he wasn't. Coutinho is. That's why we'll be playing against Madrid Hotspur next season while they'll be "rebuilding" under whoever wasn't good enough to get the United job.

I do think mobility and direct play is something that can be taught to a midfielder as Henderson has been taught under Brendan but I agree with you that he (Sigurdson) is in no way good enough to be in the squad of a title contender. Perhaps he was just in his element at Swansea.

In any case Coutinho is a far, far better player with huge potential. Liverpool certainly don't have regrets. It's funny in all the signings we've missed out on in recent windows none have really come back to bite us on the arse yet. Salah looks a decent player but I can't say I'm losing sleep over him.

Anyway I can't wait to have the likes of Henderson, Coutinho, Suarez, etc experience Champions League nights at Anfield for the first time. I was at our last Champions League game vs Florentina (which we lost), it seems so long ago I can't believe that was the last time we played in it. I've really missed it.

An ideal group would be a group not that tough but with tasty clubs- i.e. no disrespect to Eastern Europe but not a group that takes us to Russia, Ukraine and Greece as our three trips.

A lot of our fans were saying that, when Spurs spent 100m, got what looked like 5-6 quality players "without Champions League" and Arsenal had bought Ozil.

Good scouting, smart spending and a good manager with a vision. Any club with that can compete for top four.
