MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay -- Uruguay soccer great Alcides Ghiggia is in critical condition in a coma with multiple injuries and breathing problems following a traffic accident.

His son, Arcadio Ghiggia, told the daily El Pais newspaper in Montevideo on Friday that "doctors are doing all they can."

He says there's nothing to do but wait and see.

Alcides Ghiggia, 85, scored the goal that beat Brazil and won the 1950 World Cup for Uruguay.

El Pais reports that a heavy truck ran a stop sign and slammed into Ghiggia's car Wednesday.

A couple of years ago, he gave a motivational talk at a company I worked for. He is pure class, and as quick of mind as when he was Uruguay's #7. Get well soon, you legend!  :champ

"I look at him doing all sorts of crazy shit and mostly I burst out laughing at his insane genius.
I mean, if his first reaction to a ball bouncing in front of him 40 yards from goal is 'I'm going to whack this into the net from here', you just have to laugh at the sheer improbability of it all."
