Liverpool FC has today announced that Michael Owen will become the club's first official international ambassador.

This new role will see the former Liverpool striker engaging with fans around the world and representing the club at various fan and commercial events.

Owen, a product of the Reds' youth system, notched 158 goals in 297 appearances across seven seasons and was part of the team that won the historic treble of 2001, most notably scoring both goals in the 2-1 FA Cup final win over Arsenal.

He remains the last Englishman and only Liverpool player to be named the best in Europe while at the club, having been awarded the Ballon d’Or in 2001.

As international ambassador, Owen makes a welcome return to the club that gave him his first-team debut 20 years ago.

On the appointment, he said: "As a Liverpool fan I am honoured and delighted to have been asked to play this international role for the club.

"Liverpool FC is the world's greatest football family and it's great for me to be able to represent the club in an official capacity once again."

He was a sensation in his time with us and you can sense when he's commentating, he still has a soft spot for us.

No problem with it at all. Some fans just take this football stuff too seriously. You would think he's a convicted rapist for fucks sake.

The way I see it, if he had not done that, perhaps we may not have won the Champions League that season. He paid his penance by never winning a champions league. So, I'm OK with him as LFC ambassador, though I'd rather Barnes was recognized by the club.

Owen deserves neither the role as ambassador nor all the vitrol he's getting on here. Amazing player for our club, then moved to other clubs. Fans should be thankful for the amount of goals he scored and the trophies he helped us win, but he's just not one of us, like so many aren't.

Don't like the career path Owen took after us, but on the other hand he did win us some pretty big games and was a superb player for us.

I don't care about him being given this role if it helps us. At the end of it he is an iconic Premier league player, and if that helps our profile overseas then that's all I care about.

That's my view at the moment too. So he'll get wheeled out in the summer to do one of his breathtaking presentations (where's that helicopter over Dubai one!), I won't watch it anyway, same as I wouldn't watch it if it was Gary Mac, Phil Neal, Alan Kennedy or whoever else.
