If you just want a cheap one Amazon is probably best, I got one for £70 off there.

Other than that there's a big Halfords on the retail park near Aintree racecourse and a specialist shop called Formby Cycles just by Tesco on the bypass.

I'd get a road bike or at the least a city bike, it makes it so much easier work for a regular commute. Smithdown isn't really that mountainous and unless you're riding through the park or hopping up and down the pavements a mountain bike will make everything harder work.

I'd echo the suggestions to go for a hybrid rather than a mtb.  Get something decent but with a solid front forks rather than suspension.  If you think you might want the suspension then try and get one with lockable front shocks - though that will probably put you into a whole new price bracket.

Then you'll know there's a bike shop on Smithdown (Smithdown Cycles, I believe it's called). Might be worth popping in there.

gonna give that one a look in but wanted a few to compare

thanks for all replies

yeah i want a fixed frame bike, no suspension, going to do a few charity rides to, one from Southport to Woolton in the summer, so my mention of mountain bike was just in preference rather than skinny tire road race bikes

Want something as light as possible, but then I have seen one for less than 50 notes in sports direct, dunlop or something....

just noticed on halfords the town trail bike.... sounds like the one for me

Nick one. That's how most people seem to obtain bikes these days.

That's what I got, a nice Scott Sportster hybrid with lockable shocks, great bike. I have just got my mits on a Marin for a bit of off-roading of the weekend though  :D

See of your work can get on the cycle to work scheme mate, not got the link buut if you google cycle to work scheme you should get it.

You can pay for your bike ove rthe year and its taken out your salary pre tax so you get a 300 pound bike say for 200 quid
