Seems strange I'm even asking this question I suppose, seeing as the ladies are the champions, but how many teams can get relegated? Two?

Just the one for now.

The league is about to go through its next expansion phase over the next couple of years with the end goal being ten teams in both WSL1 and WSL2. WSL1 currently has eight. WSL2 already has its ten.

At the end of this season, one goes down and two come up to make WSL1 nine teams big for 2016. And WSL2 is then kept at ten by the introduction of the promoted WPL champions. The process will be repeated again the following year to give a 10/10 split in the 2017 season. Don't ask me why the FA have felt the need to do it this way, it's ridiculously overcomplicated.

They need to rest their poor legs as well though (not helped by playing just about every game on artificial turf like). Here's an idea for the FA - on the 'rest' days when one team isn't playing, they could take domesticity lessons and do things like learn how to do the laundry, make a roast dinner, brew the perfect cuppa.......

Birmingham 1 - 0 Liverpool - WSL

Ladies edged out at Birmingham

An injury hit Liverpool Ladies suffered a second successive defeat in the Women's Super League when they lost 1-0 at Birmingham on Sunday.

Going into the game Matt Beard was without injured trio Fara Williams, Asisat Oshoala and Satara Murray, but captain Gemma Bonner had recovered from the knock she picked up against Everton to start.

The exciting Katie Zelem was also back in the team after recently returning from international duty.

The home side started brightly and gained an early lead when Karen Carney converted a penalty after Martha Harris was harshly penalised for a handball.

Beard's charges tried hard to get back into the game and Zelem and Rosie White both went close in the second half.

Libby Stout made a string of brilliant saves to give the Reds every fighting chance but they couldn't find a way past a well organised Birmingham defence.

Substitute Ashley Hodson had a great late chance for an equaliser but her effort just cleared the bar. - liverpoolfc.com

Liverpool Ladies: Stout, Harris, Longhurst (Schroder 72), Bonner, Easton, Omarsdottir, Staniforth (Ryland 60), Zelem, Dowie, Smorsgard (Hodson 60), White. Unused subs: Darbyshire, Pacheco, Dale, Green.

Doncaster 0 - 3 Liverpool - Continental Cup Group Stage - Game Two

Liverpool Ladies bounced back to form in style as goals from Natasha Dowie, Lucy Staniforth and Ashley Hodson earned Matt Beard's side a 3-0 win over Doncaster Belles in the Continental Tyres Cup on Thursday night.

After the disappointing Women's Super League defeat at Birmingham at the weekend, the Ladies continued their impressive cup form at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Dowie scored twice in the Continental Cup win over Everton last week and she soon had her third goal in the competition when she finished expertly after a fantastic pass from Rosie White.

It was nearly 2-0 when Ingrid Ryland broke down the right flank and set up White for a great opening, but the New Zealand international could only fire over the bar.

Staniforth is getting sharper game by game after recovering from an ACL injury, and she soon had her first goal in a red shirt when she netted direct from a corner to make it 2-0 just past the half hour mark.

Captain Gemma Bonner then went close to making it 3-0 when her deflected effort just cleared the bar.

Beard took the opportunity to rotate his squad for the second half and give several players a much needed rest after a tough recent schedule.

Substitute Hodson had a goal disallowed after the break and Staniforth fired just over the top as the Ladies continued to apply the pressure.

Hodson wasn't to be denied though for long and she did make it 3-0 with a deflected strike to set the seal on a fine performance.

Beard's charges have a welcome break this weekend before they resume Super League action with a trip to Sunderland on Saturday August 8. - ladies.liverpoolfc.com

Liverpool 1 - 0 Durham - Continental Cup Group Stage - Game Three

Natasha Dowie came off the bench to fire the winner as Liverpool Ladies kept up their 100 per cent record in the Continental Cup with a 1-0 win over Durham at the Select Security Stadium on Saturday night.

After victories over Everton and Doncaster Belles, Matt Beard's team recorded another crucial victory as they put themselves in a great position to reach the quarrter-finals.

The Ladies dominated the game and the scoreline could easily have been a significant one, had it not been for a truly inspiring display from Durham stopper Anna Moorhouse.

With an important Women’s Super League clash with Bristol coming up next weekend Beard chose to rotate his squad.

Strike duo Dowie and Rosie White were given a rest on the bench, Katie Zelem and Ashley Hodson were given starting berths and there was the welcome sight of Satara Murray on the bench after her recent injury.

Liverpool Ladies started the game in lively fashion, passing the ball with precision from left to right, and they came close to an opener after seven minutes. Hodson broke clean through after charging through the Durham defence, but could only fire wide of the target. It was a great chance.

Hodson was causing all sorts of problems down the right flank and another run and cross ended with Kate Longhurst’s goalbound shot deflected away to safety.

Beard’s charges continued to dominate possession for the rest of the half but the Durham defence stood firm as the Ladies looked to get the vital opening goal.

On 24 minutes Line Smorsgard was unlucky when she connected with a Katrin Omarsdottir cut-back but Moorhouse made a good stop to keep out the effort.

On 32 minutes Longhurst then cut inside and saw her effort well saved by Moorhouse, and Lucy Staniforth then had a case of misfortune when her brilliant 30-yard free-kick came back off the bar.

On the stroke of half-time Smorsgard was desperately unlucky when she produced a great turn and guided an effort inches past the post.

The Ladies continued to keep up their pressure in the second half and captain Gemma Bonner was unfortunate when her low drive was superbly kept out by Moorhouse.

Frustrated with his side’s finishing in front of goal, Beard turned to Dowie and White as he made a double substitution with the pair replacing Smorsgard and Omarsdottir.

Dowie almost scored with her first touch a minute after entering the field, but the inspired Moorhouse was the obstacle again as she palmed her goalbound effort over the bar.

Two minutes later a superb pass from White put Dowie clear, but again Moorhouse was unbeatable as she made a brave save.

Dowie wasn’t to be denied though and the predatory No.9 broke the deadlock on 66 minutes when she slotted home from close range after superb play down the right from Hodson.

Moorhouse then produced several more outstanding stops to keep out Hodson as Beard’s team searched for more goals and White drilled a shot onto the bar.

There was another injury worry for the Ladies when Longhurst had to be helped off the field after a fall in the penalty area and Beard will be hoping his No.7 can make a quick recovery for the crucial fixtures that lie ahead. - ladies.liverpoolfc.com

Before our next game we have the small matter of the Champions League draw. There are two big changes this time around; one specific to ourselves and one for the tournament in general. Unlike last time, we will now have seeded protection for the Round of 32. And the general tournament change is that the Round of 16 is now also seeded as well (remaining top 8 coefficients), in order to try and fix a problem which plagued for years and that was big teams facing each other too early. It makes our R32 much easier which is welcome. It makes our possible R16 potentially much harder than it otherwise could have been, but that is for another day.

Seeded
FFC Frankfurt (GER, holders) coefficient 72.680
Olympique Lyonnais (FRA) 115.080

Draw Basics
• The 24 clubs from the 15 countries with the highest rankings according to the access list were given a bye to the round of 32.
• The other places were filled by the eight qualifying round group winners.
• The 16 sides with the highest coefficients will be seeded and placed in a separate pot from the unseeded teams.
• No club can meet a team from their own association.
• The seeds will play the second leg at home.
• Matches 7/8 & 14/15 October.
• The round of 16 draw is now made separately after the round of 32 ties are played.

Liverpool 2 - 0 Bristol - WSL

Natasha Dowie scored twice as Liverpool Ladies got back to winning ways in the Women’s Super League after a 2-0 win over Bristol Academy at the Select Security Stadium on Saturday night.

Matt Beard received a pre-match boost when Kate Longhurst was able to make the starting XI after recovering from the knock she picked up during the Continental Cup win over Durham last weekend, while Dowie and Rosie White resumed their partnership in attack.

The Ladies made a bright start and after just four minutes free-kick specialist Lucy Staniforth was unlucky when her set-piece was well saved by Mary Earps as she pushed the ball away for a corner.

Beard’s charges opened the scoring on 16 minutes and it was no surprise the goal came from Dowie, who took her tally to six goals from her last six games. Ashley Hodson was the creator with a great run down the right and her cross was met by Dowie at the back post for a tap-in.

Despite their lowly position at the bottom of the league Bristol didn’t lose heart and they came close on 26 minutes when Christie Murray’s effort was well held by Libby Stout.

Then a minute later Stout had to be on alert again when she darted from her line to block out Jade Boho-Sayo who was breaking through on goal.

Two minutes from the break Dowie almost made it 2-0 but Earps was the obstacle as she denied the No.9 at point blank range.

At the other end Murray broke clear but Stout was on hand to make a brilliant save to preserve Liverpool’s lead.

Beard made a tactical switch for the second-half with fit again Satara Murray replacing Longhurst.

The half became a bit of a midfield battle but the Ladies were always dangerous on the counter-attack.

One or two debatable offside calls denied Dowie and Hodson when they were played clean through on goal, and only a horrible bounce denied the No.9 when a superb pass from Katie Zelem player her through on goal.

It was 2-0 on 70 minutes and again it came through the same combination. It owed much to a brilliant run down the right from Hodson and Dowie was on hand to fire her cross into the back of the net.

Hodson was unlucky not get the goal she deserved five minutes from time but Earps made another great save to keep out her close range effort.

After three games without a win in the league this was a much needed three points and thoroughly deserved.

Liverpool Ladies: Libby Stout, Martha Harris, Maz Pacheco, Becky Easton, Gemma Bonner, Katie Zelem, Kate Longhurst (Satara Murray 45), Ashley Hodson, Natasha Dowie (Line Smorsgard 80), Rosie White, Lucy Staniforth (Katrin Omarsdottir 60). - ladies.liverpoolfc.com

So a win tonight puts us through?

A draw would have been enough so our win just made progression even more comfortable. There is no advantage gained from going through as group winner or runner up or 3rd place finisher so our final game isn't for anything but bragging rights now.

Liverpool 2 - 0 Sunderland - Conti Cup Group Stage

Natasha Dowie and Katrin Omarsdottir were on the mark as Liverpool Ladies qualified for the quarter-finals of the Continental Cup after a 2-0 win over Sunderland at the Select Security Stadium on Wednesday night.

Matt Beard’s charges made it four straight victories in their group after previous successes over Everton, Doncaster Belles and Durham.

A few weeks earlier both teams had played out a 2-2 draw in the Women’s Super League, but this time Liverpool Ladies were the superior side and created a whole host of great chances to have won by a greater scoreline.

In the opening two minutes of the game there was an injury scare for Sunderland when two of their players Gemma Wilson and Victoria Williams collided with each other.

After treatment both players tried to play on but Williams was the one that came off the worst and was forced off the field after seven minutes.

Liverpool Ladies then went close from a corner but Kate Longhurst could only fire the ball over the bar from close range after a great delivery from Rosie White.

Dowie was unlucky when a superb cross from Gemma Bonner fell invitingly in the penalty area, but the No.9 glanced her header just wide, and a minute later the exciting Ashley Hodson burst forward in typical style down the right, and her cross was just cleared away as White looked set to pounce.

Matt Beard’s side were dominating the game but just couldn’t convert their superiority into goals and there was always the danger of Sunderland breaking through on the counter attack.

On 21 minutes a slip from Bonner let in Beth Mead who was running clean through, but from out of nowhere the always dependable Becky Easton arrived in the nick of time to make a fantastic last-ditch tackle.

Two minutes later a superb pass from Omarsdottir sent Dowie racing clear, but after holding off the defender she blasted an effort that came back off the bar.

On 31 minutes the Ladies should have scored. Katie Zelem chased a loose ball and collided with the Sunderland goalkeeper Hilde Gunn Olsen, but as the ball dropped invitingly White’s effort lacked power and was cleared off the line.

Beard’s charges continued to dominate possession and look the more potent threat in attack, and Dowie missed a golden chance eight minutes before the break. Longhurst broke clear down the left flank, and her cross found the unmarked Dowie who could only blaze her effort high over the bar.

The second-half began with both sides in lively form going forward. Only a fantastic block from Easton prevented Mead from finding the net, while at the other end Dowie saw her low drive superbly kept out by Gunn Olsen.

Martha Harris was then denied by the Sunderland stopper after a flowing move, before Liverpool Ladies eventually broke the deadlock on 59 minutes.

White’s corner from the left found the head of Dowie who made no mistake to net her eighth goal from her last seven games.

To be fair to Sunderland they didn’t lie down after conceding and found some momentum as they began to put pressure on Liverpool.

Beard’s charges had to be at their best defensively and as tempers began to fray from both sides skipper Bonner was booked for a late challenge on Mead.

Carlton Fairweather’s side almost got a late equaliser but Libby Stout made a stunning stop to keep out Mead’s goalbound drive.

It was a big moment in the game as in the last minute Beard’s side made certain of victory when Dowie’s cross from the right found Omarsdottir who slotted home for 2-0.

Overall, once again the magnificent home support was a big help for the players and they played a big part in the team managing to hold off a spirited Sunderland side and reach the last eight of the competition. - ladies.liverpoolfc.com

There are reports in America than Matt Beard is leaving us for Boston Breakers. They apparently have an announcement due in a few hours time. It's pretty much confirmed here though: http://equalizersoccer.com/2015/09/22/boston-breakers-hire-matt-beard-coach-liverpool-nwsl-fawsl/

Nice of them to wait until our season is finished before saying anything. Or better still, don't say anything until we have first. For a league that likes to claim it is the pinnacle of the professional women's game it sure does leave an awful lot to be desired when it comes to conducting itself professionally.

All the best, Matty, it's been real mate - thanks for the amazing work you've done and all the best in Boston! Pretty poor of them to announce it before we could though, eh? Will be interesting to see who's coming in - kell, any goss on that front?

As far as I'm aware the two have no connection at all. I wouldn't mind FSG being involved with them though but purely because it would give us reason to include our women's team in the summer trips to America. I've always wanted that. It would be nice having us versus Boston as the Fenway Park game curtain raiser. I just never envisaged Beard being in the Boston dug out for it.

I've got nothing. I couldn't even start a rumour myself because a replacement doesn't spring to mind. Leagues in places like France, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Netherlands, Spain have only just started. Australia and Italy are about to start. There is so much overlap with Europe caused by the WSL being a summer league that it's very difficult to know if any managers currently employed there would be available nevermind interested.

Japan are about to finish. Norway, Scotland, Sweden, Russia finish in November. Likewise England. America and Iceland finished. If his successor comes from within the women's domestic game then I'd have to expect them to come from one of these places just because they have a close season when we will and it fits better with changing clubs. Although having said that, our pre-season doesn't typically kick off until the new year so it's not as if anybody who is currently employed would need to leave immediately.

There's plenty of options out there though. I haven't touched on the international scene. Who knows if any from the men's game would throw their hat into the ring. What's POP up to these days? ;D I shall keep my eyes peeled for goss.

Liverpool vs Notts County
Arsenal/Man City vs Birmingham

All dates and venues TBC

City have remained in the competition after their charge for fielding an ineligible player was dropped. But I can't elaborate because that is the extent of the details made public.

Great to see the Belles promoted back to the top flight where they belong (before the FA fecked them over) - Reading go up too. Looks a very close fight to see who'll go up as Champions...
