Youth Cup Match Report: Liverpool 6-0 Carlisle
« on: February 20, 2006, 10:18:39 pm »
Liverpool Youth Play Sixy Football

I was quite excited about tonight. Not only was I collecting my Crouchamania mug and t-shirt, but I was also getting to see the young lads as they faced Carlisle in the quarter final of the Youth Cup. It was the first time I had chance to see any of the lads who have yet to get a game in the reserves this season. I wasn’t the only new face though. In the Liverpool line up was Parsonage who has not played for the Under 18’s before and can only be 16 years old at the most.

Carlisle brought a very respectable following. Well it was respectable in terms of numbers, but polluting The Kop with a load of Blue and White balloons and the sound of the boom-boom drum wasn’t to my fancy.

Liverpool, and in particular Hammill, started as they meant to go on. As early as one minute into the game and Hammill beat two men and fired in a dangerous cross which Parsonage just failed to get on the end of.

Parsonage was looking very lively early on and had his first shot of the evening after brilliantly turning his man on seven minutes. Unfortunately he steered his shot wide, but the pattern of the game had already been set.

Before Liverpool really enforced their superiority though Carlisle had a couple of half chances; Thelfall clearing up the first and then creating the second when he miscontrolled. This created their best chance of the night when Antwi had to clear a header off the line. As it happens the whistle had gone for a foul anyway.

On 21 minutes young Parsonage, who sounds like a character from the Vicar of Dibley, was again involved. He jinked past a man and as I was imploring him to shoot he slipped in Linfield who smashed the ball home into the top left hand corner as he advanced toward goal from the right side.

Ten minutes later and Liverpool were two up. Barnett looked to be going nowhere, he decided to go for a shot. This time I thought it was the wrong decision to shoot, but was again proved wrong as the ball beat the keeper all ends up as Barnett scored his seventh goal this season.

With barely time to draw breath, Barnett was again positively involved, as he crossed from the left wing and Linfield rose to head home to join Barnett on seven goals for the season. 3-0.

It wasn’t to be Linfield’s last however it was Barnett who nearly furthered his tally on the forty minute mark. He took a free kick from 25 yards out and with the keeper nowhere saw the ball bounce off the top of the cross bar. Liverpool were now completely dominant and went in at half time with surely an unassailable lead.

Half Time Score: Liverpool 3-0 Carlisle

Bradley the Carlisle keeper was in for a busy night. Four minutes into the second half he was again called into action. This time he made the save of the night preventing Hammill from scoring with a shot that looked to be bending into the far corner.

The usually influential Anderson wasn’t getting much ball tonight, but he was certainly involved, mainly in an ongoing argument with the Carlisle number 5 Kirkup, who was about a foot taller than him. After winning a free kick Anderson nearly had the satisfaction of seeing the big centre half put through his own net as the ball skimmed off his head and slightly wide of goal. He didn’t have to wait long though. From the resulting corner Anderson got a flick and Linfield managed to bundle the ball home for a well-deserved hatrick. He looked full of confidence on the back of his recent impressive run and worked very hard for his three goals.

With fifteen minutes of the game remaining I got a hatrick of my own. Hammill looked up from within the centre circle and shot with the keeper only about seven yards off his line. “No!” I said to myself as I watched the ball fly over the keeper and perfectly under the bar. I have to say it was one of the best strikes I have ever had the pleasure to witness at Anfield!

Liverpool made a few late changes with Anderson, Antwi and Linfield leaving the pitch to be replaced by Barrett, Holmes and Nardiello. Nardiello had only been on the pitch for 4 minutes when he slotted home in the 86th minute after beating his man.

He nearly scored again in time added on and with all due respect to Carlisle a few more goals wouldn’t have flattered Liverpool tonight. It was an excellent performance. It wasn’t just the result, but the style too, it was very good football and a pleasure to watch.

Full Time Score: Liverpool 6-0 Carlisle

Now I’m going to go and get a cuppa in my new Crouchamania mug while all you lot who watched it live on e-season can pick up on all my inaccuracies and over elaborations ...

We must have a good chance to win this cup this season.

Man of the Match: A really difficult selection, Parsonage was excellent in the first half but faded. Charlie Barnett was outstanding, but I suppose it has to go to hatrick man Linfield. He’s on a great run at the moment and long may it continue.

Roberts, Darby, Thelfall, Hobbs, Antwi (79, Holmes), Barnett, |Parsonage, Flynn, Lindfield (82, Nardiello) Anderson (70, Barrett), Hammill

Unused subs: Ryan, Mimms

Nice report there. Was a very good match and agree about your MOTM.

We certainly do have a lot of talent for the future. If Parsonage works on his fitness so he can last the full 90 without getting too tired then we have a tremendous talent for the future.

Hammill was immense and we have a great goal scorer in Linfield. Thoroughly deserved his hat trick. Looking forward to watching the semi.

Ah come on, you're blatantly jealous about the drum! :P

It was a good game though, Liverpool would have got more if it wasn't for some canny defending by the cumbrians.

Why weren't the liverpool fans singing?  We TOTALLY outsung you, and we were away!!!!!  I didn't hear a single liverpool chant.  tut tut.

We nearly opened the scoring too, i'm not sure whether the ball crossed the line or not, but it was from a corner.

It was a good game though, liverpool were just too good.

I went tonight and it was an excellent peformance all round.

Hammil was superb all night and Lingfield had a pretty much complete game - held the ball up well, worked hard, always made himself available and most importantly - but the ball in the back of the net a couple of times.

Glad someone got on it. ;)

As for Parsonage he seems to be quite like Anderson. He was always looking for the ball, very tricky and quick. His decision making was occassionally slow, but was brilliant for the first goal. When Anderson went off he moved up front.

To say he's only just sixteen he certainly didn't look out of place. According to Maldini (who did some searching) he seems to be a scouser too. :)

Excellent Performance from the young lads last night!!

Wasn't sure wether to go this one last light, so glad I did now. Godwin Antwi stood out and looked very calm and assured on the ball, very very hapy with him, and if hes playing regularly in the ressies, looking good for the future!!  Anderson looked pretty impressive too, always chasing lost causes and had a bit of energy to burn, just a shame not to see him net one tonight

Honourable mention to Craigy Lindfield, took all of his goals pretty well, hope he savours that match ball .

One thing I wasnt overly impressed with was that the entire team, probably Antwi aside, looked a touch lightweight, the majortiy of the lads were getting knocked off the ball a bit easily really.

I thought Carlisle did pretty well, they brought at least 1,200-1,500 of the total there, stated at about 2,920 I think? Didnt think it was that low though, all the front 35 Rows or so of the Kop were full

However, not gonna put a dampener on the evening for the young Reds, and I hope that we can have another good young side to emulate that of 1996 and hopefully push one or two of these lads on into the Ressies for next season :wave
