Awful that. We weren't even bad, just completely mediocre. Can easily fix it in the second leg, but I'm feeling pretty negative right now.

- We have lost two of our three piano players. First Coutinho, then Mane. We have also lost our best midfielder in Henderson, and best defender in Matip.

And at least two if not three of those should play a part on Sunday, so things should improve.

Something wrong somewhere. Missing Hendo certainly - but even Milner and Clyne aren't playing well.

The only regular who can be reasonably proud is Lallana.
I thought Lallana was awful.

- We are a rollercoaster team by nature. We have ups and downs. Sometimes the ups last longer than the downs, sometimes the reverse. I advice to enjoy the ups while they last.

Looks like we're running out of steam

Virgil van Dijk Very impressive again
Was made to look impressive though, against Spurs he looked like a championship player the other week.

Can, Lucas and Sturridge were woeful.

Feels like we've been lacking creativity for a while now, very worrying with Utd coming up Sunday and them on fire.

Coutinho looks good and relativelymatch sharp. We need him to get 60mins at least on Sunday.

Karius played well.

Otherwise,  utter, utter shite.

As bad as the humbling we received from Stoke a few years ago. Unbelievable luck that we didn't lose 4 or 5 nil and still have the chance to progress in the second leg.

United on form against that defensive performance we fielded tonight....does not bode well.

Shite. most players had a decent break between matches too. Shite showing.

I think there's usually calls for a scapegoat after a bad performance, but aside from a couple of small errors I don't think any of the players were particularly bad - I think the problem was systemic. It brought out the best in noone.

Well that wasn't very good was it. A shame, but not the end of the world. I feel for Can, it's really not working out for him at the moment. He was never this bad before for us, only when he played CB for us under Rodgers perhaps. But these past performances are just quite awful I'm afraid.

Southampton were the only team pressing tonight.

Whatever happened to: our energy, quick decisive passing, quick flowing dangerous breaks, goal threat and pressing?

All seems a very long time ago.
Ever since the city game.

No pace no party.

Klopps play does not work as well without pace. Our man with pace has gone. We choose not to replace, our own doing. Fucking stupidity. 5 more huge games this month too.

January is not over yet lets just wait and see before the bashing starts.

Well that was shite. We looked totally devoid of ideas. That is three dodgy performances on the bounce now, though admittedly one of those was a team of kids.

The midfield in particular was dreadful tonight. Caught in possession too often and too many slow, innocuous and predictable passes. No zip to our play whatsoever.

Let's pray that Klopp can get them back up to scratch for the weekend.

Don't think we're dealing with mane missing. It's all too rigid whereas when we were scoring for fun it was all about the ultra flexible positioning of our top 3 / top 5.
Tonight was just too one dimensional and easy for Southampton.
Our aggressive pressing has also dropped off. Don't fancy Can and Lucas in the same team. Lucas has a very defensive mind set and I'm not sure what Can is supposed to be. He's not a destroyer, ala Steve McMahon, he's not creative, he's not fast.  I just don't get his role.
Oh well, let's do s Villarreal and break them to pieces in the home leg.

Not an irrecoverable result (well, not unless we play like that again) and all things considered we're actually very lucky at coming out of that 1-0 down. Big improvement needed in the second leg if we're to have any hope of progressing, but I suspect Southampton will just park the bus and frustrate us, and it'll probably fucking work as well.

More concerning though are the question marks that have been brewing for a number of weeks:
Defence. For every half decent run of 2-3 games where none of our defenders colossally fuck up, suddenly everyone is out in force declaring that the defence is fine, but then you get games like tonight's just that wee bit too often for me to think that we're particularly good back there. When you cough up goals as cheaply as we do, you won't win shit.

Midfield. Atrocious tonight. My personal view of Can is that he isn't a very good midfielder period but even if I were to be kind I think it's fair to say he's been very poor this season, a few goals aside. Doesn't look anywhere near a first-eleven quality player. Wijnaldum is very much a complimentary player - he looked excellent with Lallana and Henderson and Coutinho and Firmino ahead of him but knock a few of those out and he looks lost and out of his depth. Very much a player (so far) who needs everything to be going right to have an impact. Lucas was simultaneously actually alright and also showed why he doesn't play in midfield anymore, and in any case that he's had to come in at all is a bit of a sad indictment of our depth and quality in midfield. Lallana is too often being shunted out of midfield because of our poor depth in other areas of the field. We need at least one more top midfielder to compete seriously - no more projects, or potential.

Attack. Probably one of the harder areas to judge but I think we're lacking overall.
- Firmino is a good player but his form is atrocious and yet our depth is so poor that he plays regardless, when he probably should have been dropped 4-5 games ago.
- Sturridge, for all his quality, just doesn't convince in a Klopp team whatsoever. Yet to see him have a really standout game and these are the times of matches he needs to be up for it and making a positive impact in, but once again it passed him by. Not a long-term option for us.
- Origi I rate a lot, but he's just yet another player in the "potential" category, where it seems we have been perennially stuck for years now. We need something a little more proven to properly succeed.
- Good to see Coutinho back, but it's desperate that the functionality of our attack seems to depend on the fitness and form of just 3 players, and at the moment one is having a fucking mare, one is half-fit and the other is in Africa. We need at least one more player on a similar level - not back-ups, youth players or shoddy fits.

For me tonight was the culmination of weeks of poor form (masked by ok-ish results) and showed just how far short we really are. One positive was the much improved, assured display of Karius, who looked a different bet altogether tonight. Apart from that, that was worrying.

Football is a squad game. We need to sign better players. Every team gets injuries.

Every team has their piano players. Even Barca suffers if Messi is out for long, or Iniesta. They basically lost the league during the period when Iniesta was out. Chelsea have been lucky not to lose Hazard or Costa, likewise Leicester with Mahrez, Kante and Vardy last season. We became a different team once we lost the likes of Alonso or Suarez. Some players are more important than others. It's denial to say the opposite.

Not a disastrous result in itself, but what's really worrying is that our performances are getting worse and worse. Can't remember the last time we actually played really well. We showed resilience against Everton and Man City, but when was the last really good performance where we played with energy, dominated and created chances?

Well that was very poor.

Tippy-tappy sideways slow football ain't going to beat a park-the-bus team. What % of possession did we have yet we did nothing with it. We were ponderous and had nobody upfront moving.

The only good thing is that we only lost 1-0 so we are still in the tie.

The worrying thing is that we've looked very poor recently......tired and slow.

Really agreed
Really missed pace with Mane
And can/Lucas had no pace in the centre of midfield
We were extremely poor tonight
We really need hendo matip back
And swap origi for Sturridge

Time will tell. Our squad is stretched big time at the moment and performing the way we have without Phil and Matip out so long has been rather astonishing and is a testament to how Klopp has formed this group of players.

Karius was brilliant tonight. Not going to talk too much about the rest. It's half time and we're lucky to be still in it. Fingers crossed we didn't use all our luck up for the weekend...

We have been quite the same since we switched Firmino out of the middle. Put him back in the centre with Coutinho on his left and whoever on the right.

No player deserves any credit tonight but I thought Lucas and Can were shockingly bad.

Can people stop saying it feels like a win, it doesn't. Our midfield was bullied from start to finish. How Lucas is still at this football club I'll never know. So physically week with fuck all pace. With the money at our disposal how have we put ourselves in a position of playing Emre Can and Lucas in a cup semi final. Just shocking and yes my head has fell off!

in my opinion when we have a full team and theyve had a few games on the trot we're great. When we have to rely on other players to come in theyre either pretty average (Can, Lucas, Klavan) or we lose the energy and dynamics of our pressing and attacking game (Origi, Sturridge). When we have at least 3 of them together we're not the same team.

Not sure how we set up on Sunday but id like us to play the Coutinho, Firmino and Lallana trio we've seen work effectively in away games. That leaves a space in midfield for one of Can or Lucas provided Henderson is back (which is essential now) or we go with a youngster...

Its becoming fairly obvious (this game highlights as well, if not better than others) that we need to address the midfield in the summer.
