Going to Manchester
« on: August 7, 2013, 08:30:38 pm »
Good night,

A mate and I are coming to Liverpool for a long week-end to see us play against Stoke. We'd like to go to Man City - Newcastle as well, have already booked tickets etc. There is one thing, the train website isn't really helpful. Does anybody have experience with going to Lime Street and go to Oxford Road from there? Is it possible to just go to Lime Street, pay by cash and get on the train we want to get on?

And if so, does anyone know whether the prices on offer(there are fares for as little as three pounds) will rise to a higher amount when we go to Lime Street and buy the ticket on the day of travel?

Many thanks!

If you're going from Lime St to the Etihad then Piccadilly station is better as you can walk to the ground from there. It's the stop before Oxford Road.

You can get tickets on the day but you'll pay full fare. However it's off-peak if you travel after 9:30 so shouldn't be too bad. It's about £12 for a single journey and £14 for a return ticket.

Just be careful as there are two services to Manchester. The one to Piccadilly is run by Transpennine Express but there's a slower one to Manchester Victoria run by Northern Rail.

Thanks. I think we'll be cancelling the tickets in that case and just go to Lime Street and get that one. You're sure we can pay by cash?

Yes, you can buy a train ticket at the station in cash, at just about every single station in the country.

Absolutely 100%, you're tickets will probably still be valid though as oxford road is about two minutes from Piccadilly and most tickets will have "manchester stations" printed on them.

The cheaper £3 will only be valid on that particular train. So if you miss it, you'll pay the full fare.

Northern rail run to Piccadilly aswell, takes the same amount of time.

There's an east midlands service too, all just under the hour mark.

Don't get the local stopping one, as that takes an age. If in doubt ask as you board how long it takes to get to Manchester

Unless money's really tight, I'd be getting a taxi to the Etihad from either Oxford Rd or Piccadilly station.  It is a good 20 min walk to the Etihad if you know where you're going, and it's not that well signposted.

At certain times, very very early in the morning or late at night. But with guards at the ticket barriers at lime st and Piccadilly the odds are shortening (this is from someone who for over two years made the trip to work)

Much easier just to switch to the tram at Piccadilly Station that now goes direct to the Man City stadium.

Used to be able to do that loads, but these days they have guys when getting on and off at the stations checking for tickets so is a lot harder.

If you pay by cash at Lime Street make sure you show them your match ticket to the city game so the people in the ticket office can give you a 'travel validity pass' - if the police do a random spot check on the train and you are found going to Manchester without a 'valid reason' to travel they can assume you're a hooligan looking to cause trouble. Especially on the Transpenine ones mentioned by ManchesterBlue above, as these ones stop outside Old Trafford.

Old Trafford train station is only in operation on match days.

Seeing as he's going for the City game, Man Yoo won't be at home.

I now live in Manchester and travel over for the games. Never had any issue with needing a reason to travel

That would be quite shit though since our tickets are kept apart for us at the Etihad. I guess the 'order confirmation' thingy would do though.

They are cracking down, and I think it applies to non-matchdays as well. My cousin was on a manc-liverpool train yesterday evening and said a 65 year old woman got escorted off at Warrington because she didn't have the correct documentation, the police were saying to each other stuff like "we've got another hooligan" etc.

Look, I was just trying to signal something that I'd been told. I didn't have to say anything but the original posters request was fare enough. I just didn't want his trip over to see the mighty reds to be spoilt - things like getting thrown off the train for being a hooligan won't encarraige members of the #allred family to come over will it? I wish you'd all stop bickering and get the thread back on track. In trying to police this place, some of you are getting ideas above your station.
