Anime Anyone?
« on: April 2, 2009, 07:12:53 pm »
Like a few of us, I use the Media and Arts forum to get tips. Flagpole Corner for me is one of the best things about RAWK.

Anyway, I occasionally watch Anime and currently I'm hooked on Death Note which is quite excellent. I can't find an Anime thread, so I'd like some recommendations. I'm no expert, from what I've watched my choices would be:

Pretty much anything by Hayao Miyazaki
Akira
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Ghost in the Shell
Cowboy Bebop

There are several Miyazaki fans on here somewhere. The mans a genius. I have all his films, and find myself watching them again and again. My personal favourite is Princess Mononoke.

Mostly the Studio Ghibli stuff is what i enjoy, but Im partial to a bit Ghost in the Shell and Stand Alone Complex.

Miyazaki is great.

Ive only seen one Manga film fully, which was Akira, and which was very good.

I cant watch the other ones though. They scare me.

Rozen Maiden is pretty good. Well, Series 1 focused more on a teenager, and got a bit boring, but Series 2 and Traumend focused on seven sisters basically fighting it out and delved a lot further into thier psyches and things like that.

Also, it looke absolutely gorgeous

My friends watch some utter random shit, though some of it is fucking cool. Hokuto No Ken makes me laugh my arse off, it looks like Sylvester Stallone nobbled Bruce Lee and just fucks with everyone.

I've watched a few episodes of One Piece with my little sister and I actually laughed, seems good fun.

The only problem with anime is that Japanese sensibities and culture is so strange at times, so the thoughts and concepts dont always translate well.

One Piece is completely epic. Been going ten years strong and we're only now seeing the first unoriginal idea in the manga. Eichiro Oda is a genius.

Also, concerning Death Note, watch out for the different (and less powerful) ending they gave it (when compared to the manga), and a couple of other stuff they threw into it as well. I felt Death Note was a cool cult manga when it came out, it got totally latched onto by a lot of mainstream fans who then made it uncool. I can't stand some of the fandom either.

As for me, Gundam 00 has just finished it's final episode this week, so good riddance to that. Sengoku Basara just aired last night (an anime loosely based on the Sengoku Period in Japan) and looks to be totally gar from the Raw I watched, I assume it'll get subbed sooner or later. Full metal Alchemist and Dragon Ball Kai are also starting off their first episodes within the next 7 days but I can't be arsed with either of them.

I love Anime, Miyazaki  is amazing, as many have said, the Studio Ghibli works are works of art, and that's before you take into account the excellent stories.

I've become hooked on a number of different series over the years, here's my faves, in no particular order of favourite or of when i watched them

Escaflowne
Noein
Death Note
Afro Samauri
Samauri Seven
Mushishi
Ergo Proxy
Ghost in the shell SAC

I'm sure that there's more that i haven't thought of.....

It's a shame that Anime isn't taken more seriously, but it's because films like Urotsukidōji are "adult erotic" (with raping school girls with large tentacled alien beasts). Seems to me a lot of people who haven't seen any decent anime, have still seen something like this, and it still tars the whole genre in their mind. Other people just say "well cartoons, their for kids" and then proceed to watch something like the fast and the furious.

Filmwise, other that the Ghibli stuff, i do highly recommend these:

Akira (obviously)
Tekkonikreet
Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust
Appleseed
Ghost in the Shell (all of them, i think there's 3 now)

I do completely agree with this though:

The only problem with anime is that Japanese sensibities and culture is so strange at times, so the thoughts and concepts dont always translate well.

That street fighter film is about as far as I got with anime. Downloaded the second film (alpha) but when I went to watch it, it was in japanese with no subtitles  ;D

people just say "well cartoons, their for kids" and then proceed to watch something like the fast and the furious.

You need to tell them the difference! Cartoons are one-offs with everyplots and zero continuity. Anime is the exact opposite of that!

Also, for anyone interested in Death Note, it's mangaka is currently releasing another new series called Bakuman, which has been coming out over the last six months. It's about two students trying to get into the manga business themselves for their own hopes, relationships and dreams. It's not as deep or dark as Death Note was (which maybe isn't saying much anyway) but it's a great view from the inside on how aspects of the business, such as deadlines, contacts, editors, and even anime Voice Acting is all run. There's only 30 or so chapters out currently, and the main plot has only really just got started, but it's a great fun read. There's also a new 'L' so to speak called Eiji Niizuma, who is very very fruity.

For anyone who wants a read of any series, go to www.onemanga.com . It has everything. There are plenty of anime streaming sites but I would recommend you download them in full quality with english subtitles for the best experience.

Sorry to be so anal about this but "Anime" as defined,  is simply Japanese animation. Much of it is as shallow and as poorly executed as the generic tripe we've grown up with in the west.

Ooo, I almost forgot. Before I go to bed, someone here HAS to tell me they're a fan of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Please. You don't know manly until you've seen that shit.

Orange shades = manliness cubed ;D

I know I'll be repeating what some have written above but some, I feel essential viewing for ye olde burgeoning anime fan includes:

Cowboy Bebop, arguably the the best all-round series out there and undoubtedly the best for converting the uninitiated or skeptics into fans. Unless you're under fifteen or utterly abhor action, it cannot come more recommended.

Death Note, a masterfully executed exercise in suspense that raises some genuinely troubling and ambivalent emotions in the viewer.

Akira, which perhaps only along with Spirited Away (also recommended, along with any other Studio Ghibli titles) is an anime that's achieved mainstream acceptance.

The Vision of Escaflowne, has aged visually and has somewhat left of centre character designs, but is still visually arresting, with outstanding plotting, direction, voice acting (in Japanase, the English dub is a mixed bag) and character interaction, and was a unique fusion of shonen and shoujo that blended together seamlessly.

The Irresponsible Captain Tylor, is as fresh and appealing now as it was in the early nineties and is the perfect antidote to anyone who finds they can't turn on a television these days without discovering a clumsy, sanctimonious sci-fi show that takes itself way too seriously, on every other channel.

Berserk, a drama-horror set against the back-drop of some of the best realised historical fiction this side of Guy Gavriel Kay. Be warned; it makes holocaust movies seem light-hearted.

Once you've these under your belt, I might recommend Neon Genesis Evangelion (if only to understand what all the fuss is about), Fruits Basket (for its heart warming/wrenching cast), Ghost in the Shell and Ghost in the Shell: SAC (which make most live-action sci-fi series/movies look ham-handed and awkward by comparison) and once you've digested a significant amount of anime, have a gander at Excel Saga.

And if you like to get the old gray matter stirring, watch and be sucked in by Serial Experiments Lain.

Neon Genesis Evangelion
Absolute classic - only watched the thing last year and I thought the art and concept was 10 - 20 years ahead of its time. Wouldn't look out of place at all if it only were released today.

Rurouni Kenshin
Azumanga Daioh
Super Dimension Fortress Macross

Don't really like the animes nowadays because too much emphasis is put on how the anime looks rather than the story and characterisation. Naruto, One Piece whom are very popular have to try too hard ie. bombastic characters, use of superpower to justify extravagant plot devices.
Someone should do the right thing - go back in time to 1992 and destroy the codes to Championship Manager before it is ever released

We weren't meant to like it. It was a recovering manic-depressive's deconstruction of the prevailing mecha series trends, and its fans of the day, and otaku culture in general, and in that, it succeeded beautifully.

But NGE is definitely not a series for a new anime viewer.

It's the same thing with reworked art and animation - I'm fine enough with the original. The original as mentioned is so far ahead in time that it looked closer to a year 2006 release rather than one from 1996.

I loved NGE back when I was 14. I thought it was some deep shit. Then I got older and realised there wasn't any real meaning behind all the random Christian symbols everywhere. Amazing how man people that show suckered in.

Last decent anime I watched was The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Very funny show.. but you do need a little bit of familiarity with anime conventions to understand all the jokes.

It actually does as the Judeo-Christian symbols were meant to represent an idea or thought from the artists' viewpoint. Shinji's elevation in EVA-02(?) to form the Kabbalah has some symbolism to Judaism - can't remember which.

That is quite possibly one of the most amazing yet upsetting films i've ever seen, anime or live action. Pure emotion and should be held up as one of the best war films ever made in my opinion. If any of you haven't seen it, you really should, and if it doesn't move you, you're a cold hearted bastard.
And when you find yourself along the untrodden path
Remember me with a smile, a drink, a gesture or a laugh
And a toast for the man who loves every hour of every day
And a feast for the friends and faces met along way
Gratitude
