Sunday bevvy in Town
« on: October 23, 2010, 10:54:17 am »
Going on an all-dayer in Town tomorrow (Sunday), but haven't been to Town on a Sunday for ages. Where's decent nowadays? We're all out on the arm, so not arsed about where there's loads of birds, just want a laugh and a good drink. Ta.

I was in there for the first time last week and have to agree with your verdict on the place.

Rigby's/Lady of Mann court yard if it's nice. If not either is nice enough to go into to sit off and have a leisurly afternoon of making merry.
If you stay round that end you've got a couple on the corner of moorfields and Tithebarn street (the Lion and the The Railway) plus shennanigans as well.

Can't be arsed with the centre of town, round there or upto Hardman street is best i'd say.

Anyone know what time Bier Keller opens?

Not sure mate, website not up and running yet either. Know what your saying like, has potential to be better than it is, still think its a boss place for the beer selection alone.

But then I love that part of town, Dale Street is fooking boss.

Beer quality not in bottles was shite (from a few people), staff spend more time playing with their phones and ignoring customers.

Fair enough. Can't say I had the same experience with the staff. One of them even got round the bar and helped me carry the round to the table.

It was also very empty every time as well according to a few on friday nights.

Can only assume they've sorted the staffing issues out?

Yeah, it's been empty the three times I've been, but to be fair, I don't think all that many people know about it. It only opened in July apparently. I'd rather it be too quiet than too busy anyway. If it was on Seel Street, it would be full of biffs.

With your newish name and it being on Stanley Street...

Excelsior is supposed to be re-opening as well, so another pub this side of town.

Yeah i think Punch wanted someone local to run a second pub. The landlords in The Lion turned it down i think.

Nice one if the ol Excelsior is re-opening, used to meet up in their before diving into the Ship & Mitre next door - which, for all its glory can get too packed!

Another suggestion for Sundays - a mooch up to the Philarmonic and The Pilgrim, both top end of Hardman Street, even further if you fancy a walk is the Blackburne Arms.

Think The Lion ones are pissed off with Punch saying how good they are in local papers and that all Punch pubs are receiving discounts to help them in the recession when they're not.

One local brewer charges Punch (well they dictate) £55 a barrel, they said it would charge The Lion £60 if it was a freehouse. Beer actually costs them £90 via Punch.

That's on one beer alone, and the brewery delivers direct.

Thats a ridiculous margin when they're supposed to be trying to help pubs survive.I heard some of the rents the landlords are being charged and i was truly astonished.

In fairness they have turned it around a bit, as you say it used to be well dodgy pint in there and the whole place was looking a bit scruffy, but think they may have had new people in and improved it a lot.
Lucky the place didnt burn to the ground when the Korova next door went up a few months back!
