Rivaldo vs Valencia. Criminally underrated these days, was a stunning player.

Maradona 86 ...the man just carried the team to a Final and was outstanding in nearly every match for them. Not quite a single performance of course but a multiple of them

Yeah...this. I can particularly remember semi-final v Belgium. Kicked all over the pitch.

Joao Pinto in Sporting Lisbon 3-6 Benfica. He scored an hattrick and his performance that night is yet considered the best performance ever by a player in portuguese league.
How this guy never left Portugal for some bigger league is beyond me.

Topped off with a overhead kick in the last minute to get them in The Champions League if im not mistaken, good shout

I agree about him being underrated, even since I dont think theres been a more technically gifted player than him he was an absolute genius

Good shout. Wasn't it his screw up that lead to Croatia's opening goal?

After that he just proceeded to own ass IIRC

I've seen José Luis Chilavert play many great games, including that World Cup game against France.

I also remember Michel Preud'homme against Netherlands in the 1994 World Cup.

But the one I'd like to say as my #1 in this category is Oleg Salenko against Cameroon in the 1994 World Cup. Salenko wasn't exactly a world class player, but he scored 5 goals in that game. It was just insane.

As soon as I saw your name as the Last poster in the thread I knew it was going to be a nomination for Tino!
I should give Keith Gillespie a special mention as well.  He probably played the best game of his life, down that wing like a Whippet and swinging the ball in so perfectly for Tino to nut them in.

PS
Kenny Dalglish was Managing us at the time as well.

Aye. He made the mistake, and from then on in put the best performance I've ever seen from a right back. He was a force of nature.

Also, seen as a lot of people are mentioning Ronaldo away to the Mancs in 2003, a special mention to Raul's performance in the first leg at the Bernabeu. They ripped United apart and Ferguson came out after the match and called him the best player in the world.

This Barca team delivered so many top class performances that they don't even look special any more. But if I have to pick some out, I'd say:
1. Real Madrid-Barcelona 2-6 Messi and Xavi
2. Barcelona-Real Madrid 5-0 a whole bunch of players
3. Barcelona-Bayern Munich 4-0
4. Barcelona - ManU both recent finals
5. Arsenal-Barcelona 2-2 It was an absolute beauty to watch

These are however more of a collective performances rather than individual performances. Recent great individual performances from other teams:

1. Atletico Madrid-Chelsea Falcao
2. Malaga-Zenit Isco
3. Germany vs England and Argentina in WC2010. Any player, but I'd give it to Sweinsteigger. Again, more of a team performance.

Redondo is a great shout. Ronaldo took all the plaudits for that hat trick game but Redondo was mesmeric in that tie, especially the second leg.
You're mistaking the 2000 QF with the 2003 QF, Redondo didn't play with Ronaldo in the same Real Madrid team mate.

Beckham didn't come on, he played the full 90 minutes.

Got to be Rivaldo v Valencia for me. Easily the best hat-trick I've ever seen and it was such an important match for them too.

My recollection of the Greece game is that Greece were more than a match for England but two moments from Beckham meant England qualified.

AFirst half was dreadful, but last 20 mins was a bombardment.

Is that counted as a 'performance' then? I would have thought that it would be over the whole match, whereby the team are generally in control. It's similar to the FA Cup in 2006, I don't think Gerrard had a great game - we did draw 3-3 after all - but that match was defined by moments, of which Gerrard provided a four memorable ones, which was enough. That's my interpretation of it anyway, I'm sure others will disagree.

Beckhams second half was indeed an awsome performance. Probably his best game for England imo. I see what you are getting at though.

I still think overall one of my favourites was McManaman for Real Madrid in the CL Final... It was an absolute masterclass from him start to finish... Dominated the game.

Stephane Henchoz against Barcelona at the Nou Camp. Was a 0-0 draw I think but he was magnificent that night.

Gonna throw something a little different into the mix;

Craig Bellamy
Liverpool vs Manchester City
25th January 2012
Anfield

One of the ones i was going to post.

Also a couple of Momo ones that are often forgotten;
Chelsea in Charity Shield.
Barca in the Nou Camp.
Think he was also amazing in the Gerrard final as well. Also the game against West Ham just before the final.

Other mentions Kaka vs the manc's in 07.
Aimar in Rafa's Valencia against us.
Now you think Ronald McDonald gonna go down to the basement and say, "Hey Mr. Nugget - you the bomb. We sellin' chicken faster than you can tear the bone out. So I'm gonna write my clowney ass name on this fat-ass cheque for you."

Ronaldinho at the Bernabeu seems like an obvious choice. It was before the era of superhumans like Messi where doing something like that left you genuinely awestruck.

Neuer at the Westfalen in his final season for Schalke was amazing. I mean Joe Hart was impressive and all but he mostly dealt with shots outside the area. I'll never forget Neuer rushing out against Lewandowski saving the ball with his ribs before sprinting 30 yards and catching the ball when Götze crossed it. Didn't believe it was happening when I watched it. Had some insane saves where he frankly had no right to get a hand to the ball.

And although I don't remember the game myself, my grandfather swears that Buffon vs. Milan (think it was '95 or '96) was the best goalkeeping he'd ever seen.

Pirlo vs. England was an amazing performance, despite the game being relatively boring. Considering Pirlo was done, after the full season he had with Juve and the way he almost single handedly spanked England was, not simply something you admire, something you'd show any midfielder learning how to play the game.

Ariel Ortega vs. Jamaica in the '98 World Cup. Granted not the biggest of occasions, but he was unstoppable. Scoring two, supplying another two and being instrumental in every play they had. They had 3 players on him and he just trolled them by passing the ball, evading the defenders like an offshore account does tax fraud, before picking the ball up again and strolling away with it. His finish for the first was sensational, brilliant technique, his 2nd was brilliant and his passing was as great as you'd want from any Argentina #10 and I still can't believe Argentina only scored 5 that day.
