Thought he was brilliant today...Gerrard was having an off day but he ran his socks off and earned the penalty that finished the game off

Another great game from Joe today. He got forward as well as defending and helping out Alberto (Balotelli did a very good job there as well).
Yes it was a soft penalty but he was grabbed and we got the decision. For their 'penalty shout' I think that if Adeybayor goes down then he wins the penalty but that doesn't matter now any way.

I thought he drifted in and out of the game today.  Didn't really make a telling contribution until the penalty (which was soft to be honest).  First time I've seen his massive lack of core strength actually used as an advantage though. He's just so easy for players to hold off when compared to henderson and gerrard, it hurts our pressing.

Still, did his bit and won the pen.  It's not like Can is making a pressing case for his inclusion yet either.

Ahh yes but what does Allen actually do? You know apart from winning the ball back, controlling possession, closing down players, earning penalties and covering the full backs.

Other than that he does fuck all to justify his place in the team.  8) 8) 8)

Allen says we're too honest and too nice.

He then goes and wins us a soft penalty (and it was, no matter how soft) that changes the game.

Does a lot of the dirty work for us, but good to see him getting in the box as well.

Allen and Henderson are such role models out there for us. They so very rarely make a mental error and their ability to get around the pitch and actually impact the game once there, is such a bonus from the middle of midfield.
Almost identical penalties won by Allen today and at old trafford.

Lucky to have both of them, even if Allen sometimes gets forgotten about. Love him.

I thought Allen was excellent and I'm pretty certain he was brought off because he was on a yellow rather than his level of performance.

Excellent, boundless energy and does the dirty work in midfield.  Showed his value to the team and squad again.  He can be more effective in attack, he has the ability, but think he's started this season very well.

Allen:
Quote
“We can be too honest and too fair at times,” the midfielder said. “It can be seen as a good thing but at this level you need to be clever at times. At times we can maybe stop things at source and save ourselves a lot of trouble.”
Done that today.

Had an OK game but was solid defensively. You could out someone in there with better offensive but would he gives us good balance.

He's tailor made for games like this. Very rarely makes a mistake and he's always available to help out in defence or for the pass. He's not a world beater, but like Henderson, he's just the right kind of player for this team, and I think people are sometimes guilty of overlooking that for outright star quality.

Jesus what options we have in Allen, Coutinho and Lallana! And options is the salient point, because these players will be chopped and changed depending on the opposition and the needs of the team, because they all have different attributes. What a luxury to have!

Great game from Allen today, and fantastic work in winning the penalty that effectively killed off Spurs' resistance. He's clearly taken his own advice - could have tried to stay on his feet, but a penalty offered a much better scoring chance from that position, and as long as the referee sees it, that tug-back is a penalty every time. I had Joe down as being at the bottom of the pecking order for our senior midfielders, but if he keeps his performances up, we're going to have so many fantastic options in midfield.

Going to get a chance, with Ballotelli changing the way our midfield will tend to be shaped, to stake a claim for a regular first team spot. Be interesting to see if he can take it.

Think it will either be him, Coutinho or Lallana in that position depending on oppostion. Away from home against the top sides you'd want Allen

Yeah that's what I was just thinking. Home games you'd expect either of the other two. Allen does a good job of balancing the team when he plays.

Competition !!

Whoever is making themselves undroppable will win the battle. Allen continues to impress but he has a mighty battle on his hands to keep Coutinho and / or Lallana on the bench.

It is Gerrard who should really be looking over his shoulder.

Special mention to Allen, took a booking to prevent a possible goal & very intelligently hit the deck after feeling contact to win the pen.

Thought he had a pretty good game today. He went down  easily on the penalty, but I wouldn't call it a dive. He seems more assured and confident, particularly going forward, compared to last season.

Allen was interviewed this week, saying how the team needed to be more cute and clever in certain situations and better manage parts of a game, and hats off to him he done exactly that today, taking the booking and then winning us a penalty.

He's a brilliant footballer who probably doesn't get as much credit as the other lads, but nonetheless he is an invaluable player in our team to have.

It was a dive because there's no doubt he could have stayed on his feet, however by the letter of the law it's a pen and it wouldn't have been given if he stayed on his feet. Right decision by Joe and another solid performance.
