The trip up the Aberdeen on the special was ..erm!...an experiance!...especially when the Glasgow Police joined us!...on the way back there was an ale ban and they took loads of ale away..except two clever scousers who hid their bottle of rum in the toilet cistern and looked like the tin man with cans stuffed down coats arms and up our trouser legs....the bizzies turned all the lights of so it helped me and me mate bevvy under the bizzies noses.....maybe I wasnt so clever though....the train got into Liverpool at 7:30am and I went straight to work!!...uuurgghhh!!!

Oh and Terry Macs goal was a beaut!!...the Aberdeens Manger was so embarrased by the defeat he resigned from football and has never been heard off since!

Atletico Madrid - One of the best Euro aways due to the friendliness of the Atletico fans. It was immediately clear there were no hard feelings that their favourite young striker now wore the all red of Liverpool. In fact, just the opposite. They still worshipped him, as of course we did at that time, and although they might've wished he was still an Atletico player, they were proud of how well he was doing at Anfield.

Before, during and after the match, Torres songs were belted out. Their Frankie Valli version followed by our bounce, followed by us singing their Frankie Valli version and them bouncing. The Stadio Vicente Calderon was an atmospheric place and looked incredible, absolutely packed to the rafters with passionate Atletico fans. The fact that Torres was injured did little to dampen the mutual adoration of him, although the travelling Kop of course found room for an Ole Ole Ole for Florent Sinama-Pongolle as well as plenty of "He drinks sangria" for a certain little legend.

I might have this wrong, but I've got a feeling that when Marseille played there a few weeks before there was crowd trouble. I think Uefa wrongly saw the Liverpool match as a potential flashpoint and were threatening sanctions which the Spanish knew would not be necessary.  In the event, I think any sanctions were postponed. We ended up stood right next to the Atletico fans with little or no segregation and the mutual respect and scarves that flowed between the two sets of supporters made a mockery of Uefa concerns. I got a huge hug off one Atletico fan at the end as we poured out of the ground to be met by a guard of honour of applauding Spanish fans. We applauded back, then dived into a nearby bar and went through the entire repetoire of LFC songs old and new, pausing between each one to let the Atletico fans have their turn. Big plastic pints of Mahou flowed, people climbed onto tables to sing and dance and the bar became one big fiesta. A special atmosphere and a great trip.

1975 Real Socidad (UEFA Cup 2ed round 1st leg) Atocha 3-1
Steve Heighway 20' Ian Callaghan 61' Phil Thompson 82'
Att 16,256

One of the best European aways ever and still at a time when very few supporters did them by making their own arrangements rather than booking on organised trips. My own trip started badly. I went to the wrong port (Dover) and had to get a taxi round to the right port (Folkestone) to join the ferry I knew my friends were on. Across the Channel, into and out of Paris and a long overnight journey by train crossing into Spain in the south-western corner of France. Real Sociedad play now in a shiny new stadium but back in 1975 they were using the Atocha stadium which was right by the railway-station. The locals were absolutely brilliant. They treated us like kings everywhere we went. A few of us couldn't face that bloody train journey back so the morning after the match we shared a taxi to Santander and caught a ferry that was going to Southampton. It was the first time I had travelled through the Bay of Biscay and it was quite wretched. I made a mental note never to use that route again. Well, we got back to land safely and I had a full 24 hours to recover before getting on the move again to watch the weekend's home match against Derby County.

Mark Wright 65' Steve McManaman 79' ??red card for what player??
Att 55,000

I remember watching this on television. Don't think many supporters made the trip to this one. We fought back to equalise twice and with the score at 2-2 things were looking good. Then Bruce Grobbelaar gave away a penalty and was sent off for the same incident. David Burrows replaced Bruce in goal and guessed the right way for the spot-kick but it was just out of his reach. We conceded a fourth goal just before full-time to leave us with a very difficult task to turn the tie round at Anfield, a task we were unable to achieve because the Russians beat us again.

2005 Fulham (Premier League) Craven Cottage 0-2**
Att 22,480

This match was sandwiched between a terrific Champions League win at Anderlecht and a miserable League Cup defeat at Crystal Palace. At Fulham Harry Kewell started for the first time since the Istanbul final five months earlier. Fulham dedicated their victory to Johnny Haynes, who had died four days earlier.

I remember going to that 0-0 thriller with coventry. Can anyone remember if Bruce had a bad illness around then? Can remember their fans singing "where's your keeper gone".

The Wimbledon game was one of the early ones played while the Kop was being rebuilt and had no roof. We'd been blessed with decent weather at previous home games, but about 15 minutes in the heavens opened, and it poured down non-stop. I remember chants of "sing when we're soaking" and "we want a roof!" There was that much water on the pitch that I feared the game might get abandoned near the end.

Keane took his goal well in Madrid. He then missed a much easier chance by trying to showboat when all he had to do was knock the ball over the line. He then did the same thing at Bolton a few weeks later.

1971 Huddersfield Town (Division One) Anfield 2-0
Tommy Smith 57' Alun Evans 80'
Att 41,627

Smith missed a penalty at the Kop end that led to his goal. Huddersfield goalkeeper David Lawson guessed the right way by diving to his left and pushing the ball away. Not far enough though. Smith, following up, reached the loose ball before any defender and squeezed his shot in at the near post before Lawson could fully recover from making the original save. It was the 6th of 10 penalties that Tommy Smith missed for Liverpool in competitive matches.

Kevin Keegan 36'
Att 35,027

Keegan's goal looked like giving us a narrow lead to take to Hungary but Ferencvaros equalised in the last minute through János Máté. That goal proved crucial because the second leg was goal-less and so we went out on the Away Goals rule.

Well to add to the story... mate was in Spain at the time of that match.(Honeymoon).  Wanted to know where he might watch on TV.  Found the name of the guy who ran the Supporters Club in Madrid for him.

Couple of emails etc and he was sorted for watching. Night before the match, he got a phone call from one of the Madrid ex-pats offering a ride & tickets to the game.  Even took the new wife up for the day.

Memorable time for them both.

That Boavista game was almost an incidental backdrop to a huge outpouring of support for Gerrard Houllier who was still in hospital at the time.   I remember that the bottom shelf of the away end, where we were, sang the "Allez! Allez! Gerard Hoooooooooooooooullier!" song with accompanying bounce for the entire second half.  I think I lost 12lbs.

Their fans were brilliant and formed a guard of honour for us as we left the ground.  Applauding us out of the stadium, ended up swapping my shirt for a Boavista one. A decision which almost had repercussions later that evening.  It was a nice night so we decided to walk back into the centre of Porto, which was a bit of a trek, about half way back we got stopped by a group of lads blocking the route, pointing at me and saying something that my very rudimentary Portuguese translated as being the Porto version of "have you got the time on yer Boavista bastard".  Thankfully the hurried production of a LFC scarf and my bemused protestations of "Liverpool!" soon had us receiving apologies and shaking hands before continuing onwards.

Gary Gillespie 71'
Att 12,452

This was during the period when Luton Town's Chairman David Evans had banned away supporters (this ban was finally lifted in 1990). I got a ticket from a contact who lived in Hertfordshire. There was a strong Police presence throughout the day and a lot of people wearing our colours were turned away either as soon as they arrived at the railway-station or as they approached the stadium. It was strange being at a match where officially we had no support. But when we score it is very hard not to show your feelings in some way. We were rather fortunate to win this one but this team didn't know what the word defeat meant. Mick Harford caused us a lot of problems and I remember Luton hitting the woodwork a couple of times. We rode through the storm and eventually got the breakthrough when Gary Gillespie headed in a left-wing corner from John Barnes with twenty minutes left. On the way back to the station I saw lots of people wearing red but there were still a lot of Police around and they just wanted us out of their town as quickly as possible.

They were the second. Ferencvaros were the first early in 1968. I don't think it happened again until Genoa won at Anfield in 1992.

Gillespie's goal was pretty much met with silence, Yes. I was in their rickety old Main Stand. A few Reds jumped up when the goal went in but I somehow managed to sit on my hands and do nothing to draw attention to myself. I noticed a small pocket of our supporters lower down to the left of where I was sitting but I don't recall seeing anyone thrown out because they were wearing the wrong colours.

One of the stands just looks like a row of conservatories.

David Evans (Luton Town's Chairman and also a Conservative Member of Parliament) introduced the Kenilworth Road 'away ban' after Millwall supporters trashed the stadium during an F.A. cup-tie in 1985. The ban started at the beginning of the 1986-87 season and also required home supporters to carry identity cards when attending matches. Away fans returned for the 1990-91 season and the controversial plastic pitch was replaced by grass a year later.

1981 Manchester United (Division One) Anfield 1-2
Terry McDermott 74' (Pen)
Att 41,438

This was a real sickener for many different reasons. That it was against United, that it was our first home defeat of the season, that they scored their winning goal in the last minute, that I think victory might have taken United to the top of the table briefly. Just a bad day all round, especially sinking to the mid-table mediocrity of 12th place, the same position we would occupy after losing at home to Manchester City two months later.

1970 Ipswich Town (Division One) Portman Road 0-1
Att 22,577

My first visit to Portman Road. Our away form in the 1970-71 season was truly dreadful. We lost eight times, all without scoring, and only managed to score twelve times in the twenty-one away games. Defeat at Ipswich was our fourth successive away loss (3 in the League, the other in the League cup) and we didn't score in any of them.

1972 AEK Athens (UEFA Cup 2nd round 1st leg) Anfield 3-0
Phil Boersma 9' Peter Cormack 28' Tommy Smith 78' (Pen)
Att 31,906

I usually watched home matches from the Kop but for some reason I went into the Anfield Road End for this one. I think this was the first time I did that. I don't remember many English-based Greeks being there (that would certainly be different nowadays). There wasn't the constant pushing and shoving that you get on the Kop so I had a very good view of the game as it unfolded. I remember being anxious that we should score another goal in the second half but also not concede one. I had already booked to go to the away leg two weeks later and I was very keen that we would take a healthy lead over there. Tommy Smith's late penalty and a strong and settled defence gave me my wish and I could now concentrate on the forthcoming trip to Athens knowing that bar a sensational collapse we were through to the next round after this comfortable three-goal victory.

leeds

I wondered if someone would pick me up on that!  Yes, I know Leeds beat us at Anfield in the Fairs Cup semi-final of 1971 but I thought we were talking about continental opposition as opposed to English/British opposition.

That Beşiktaş game was bloody damn awful; they scored off a deflected shot, and we just couldn't get going. Gerrard scored with a late header but too late. We beat them 8-0 at Anfield 2 weeks later when they basically gave up.
