Att    44718
Venue    Anfield
Kick Off    15:00
Date    29/10/2000

Liverpool 3 - 1 Everton , Barmby (12), Heskey (56), Berger (pen 78)

I was in the Anny Road for this match and I remember the bitter chants of die, die, Nicky Nicky, die..after he scored our first.
Campbell scored for them just after but we battered them after that...

1978 Everton (Division One) Goodison Park 0-1
Att 53,131

The match that ended our unbeaten start to the League season. We arrived at Goodison with 10 wins and a draw from the first eleven First Division fixtures. Andy King scored a spectacular second-half goal to win the match. It was Everton's first win in a Merseyside derby since the 1971-72 season.

which led to the famous interview with Andy King when some copper interrupted it and told him to get off the pitch

Ian Rush 2' 5' 36' 55' 88' Kenny Dalglish 38'
Att 31,940

Ian Rush becomes the fourth Liverpool player in the club's history to score five goals in a competitive match. It is nearly thirty years since this last happened (John Evans against Bristol Rovers in 1954) and it will be another ten years before it happens again (Robbie Fowler against Fulham in 1993).

1973 West Ham United (League Cup 2nd round replay) Anfield 1-0
John Toshack 22'
Att 26,002

A rare Monday evening match long before Sky decided that day of the week was fine for football. It had been three weeks since the 2-2 draw at Upton Park that caused this replay. Mid-way through the first half John Toshack got in front of his marker to send a header across the visiting goalkeeper and into the bottom corner of the Kop goal. Victory set up a 3rd round tie against the F.A. cup-holders Sunderland at Roker Park.

2008 Portsmouth (Premier League) Anfield 1-0
Steven Gerrard 75'(Pen)
Att 43,378

This made grim watching. Portsmouth manager Tony Adams left Jermain Defoe out of his starting line-up and with that decision disappeared any chance of an open and entertaining game. David James kept us out until Bouba Diop handled an Aurelio corner and Steven Gerrard drove the resulting penalty-kick past James's right hand into the Kop goal.

A third away defeat of the season as our defence of the First Division title continued to stutter. We dropped to 9th place in the table after this loss. It was the 7th time in a row that we had failed to win this particular fixture.

Six minutes of highlights here

After this defeat we would not lose again at Maine Road until Boxing Day, 1985. It was a run that brought six successive wins, five in the First Division plus one in the League cup, in which we scored twenty-one times and only conceded once.

The Blackburn carling cup game featured Heskey taking a penalty to try and get his hat trick, and it was one of the worst pens i've ever seen. A back pass.

This was the game after our win at Stamford Birdge and it kept up our undefeated run. I remeber we were at the top of the table and it was our best start to the season for years. We just seemed to edge out wins from games like this one at the time. I think the next game in that season was against Tottenham away which was our first loss that season.

and Lucas Neill, sent off by referee Neale Barry during our previous visit to Ewood Park on the 13th of September 2003 (the match in which both Baros and Carragher received bad injuries, Carra's as a result of a tackle by Neill), was again red-carded (this time by Mike Riley).

Valencia outplayed us that night just like they had done at the Mestalla a few weeks earlier. The game at Blackburn was when Cisse suffered a broken leg in a totally innoccuous challenge with the Blackburn defender. The poor lad was in absolute agony as his leg was horribly twisted.

Blackburn away I think was a midweek game live on the TV. We went 1-0 up, then I think 2-1 down. They were showing a replay on sky when suddenly then panned back to the game to see Baros running clear on goal and he scored.
Also they had a guy called Grabbi up front who was basically shit but managed to score probably his only goal in england against us.

My first visit to Bramall Lane. Tony Currie scored a screamer from way out to give them the lead then Keegan equalised with a neat header early in the second half.

Bramall Lane was still a cricket ground then was it ? stands on 3 sides and a cricket pavilion, or had they built the new stand ?

It was a Saturday match. Grabbi didn't score in this match, Andy. Blackburn's goals came from Bothroyd and Emerton.

The match in which Grabbi scored was a different 2-2 draw ... on 28th August 2002, which was a Wednesday evening so well remembered!

Corrado Grabbi only scored two League goals for Blackburn. The other one was against Everton.

That's quite right, Andy. Bramall Lane was still used for cricket at the time of my first visit there in 1971. So it was strange watching a football match at a three-sided ground with the cricket pavilion way in the distance to the right of where I was standing. Construction of the new South Stand started towards the end of the 1973 cricket season.

I remember going to this game. Le Tissier scored a really good goal for Southampton which was applauded by the Kop.
Also I vaguely recall one of Fowlers goals coming from a free kick wide out which was basically a ball into the box, but everybody missed and it trickled into the net. But they all count as they say.

Yes. The away end was full and there was a terrific atmosphere. Victory meant that we topped Group B with 12 points and went through with Boavista (8 points). Dortmund finished 3rd also with 8 points but with a slightly worse goal-difference than the Portuguese (both teams had won the home game against the other 2-1 so the head-to-head record was identical).

It was Stephen Wright's only senior goal for Liverpool. Then 21-years-old, he is still playing professionally in the English game, Hartlepool United being his latest club.

That was the goal that completed his hat-trick. He took a free-kick on the right in front of the Paddock, Rush went for it but didn't touch the ball, which bounced past Tim Flowers into the Kop goal.

Le Tissier scored both Southampton goals. Here is a description of the goal you remember from a match-report of the time :

"Iain Dowie headed the ball down to Le Tissier, who flicked the ball from his left foot to his right and back onto his left again, comprehensively beating Mark Wright before drilling precisely past Bruce Grobbelaar on the half-volley."

Villa finished 4th this season so the 2 points we took from them on this day were crucial, especially as we were thoroughly thrashed 5-1 when we went to Villa Park six and a half weeks later.

Correct. Murphy and Riise scored our goals that night after David Dunn had put Blackburn ahead. Damien Duff ran rings round Abel Xavier, but he wasn't alone in doing that.

Going back to October 29th and the games against Luton in 1983, and Brighton in 1985. Ian Rush was reluctant to play against Luton as he had a minor injury. Joe Fagan persuaded him to play, and the rest is history. Tony Woodcock also scored 5 that day as Arsenal won 6-2 at Villa. The Brighton game Rush miseed because of injury. Paul Walsh scored 3 to add to the 2 against Luton the previous weekend, so Dalglish dropped himself when Rush was fit again. Walsh scored 18 in 26 games before getting injured himself, and made a significant contribrution to our success that season. Walsh wanted to leave prior to the Luton game as he wasn't playing.

Hmmmm.... memories.  That Brondby defeat was a sickener.  They were bloody rubbish. We were worse.

My favourite memory from that bunch is last years late winner from Maxi at the Reebok.  Once again, they were bloody rubbish, we were worse, but we dug in and a sweet back heel from Torres found Maxi who bundled it into the net.  5000 travelling reds who were becoming innured to getting sod all on our travels by this point went absolutely ballistic and bounced to the Maxi song for the remainder of the game.  In fact we bounced right out of the ground and and all the way to our cars, coaches and trains.  MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAXI. MAXI RODRIGUEZ runs down the wing for me!

1914.  Last game before the upper class buffoons that ran the country (plus ca change eh?) decided that slaughtering half the young lads of footballing age was more important than having footy fixtures?

2007?  I am not going to embarras myself by guessing... oh alright... Pegguy?

1972 Leeds United (League Cup 4th round) Anfield 2-2
Kevin Keegan 31' John Toshack 80'
Att 44,609

An opportunity for some sort of revenge over Leeds for knocking us out of the Fairs cup two seasons earlier.

I remember watching the highlights on television that evening. Keegan headed into the Kop goal to give us the lead but Leeds equalised with a scruffy goal and then took the lead through Peter Lorimer. John Toshack got our equaliser with a fierce drive into the roof of the net.

The attendance of nearly 45,000 was a reflection more of the intense rivalry between Liverpool and Leeds at the time than any great interest in the League cup. Although still seen as a second-rate competition by many supporters, Bill Shankly took it seriously enough by making only two changes from the team that had drawn at Norwich in the First Division the previous weekend (Hughes for Thompson and Toshack for Boersma).

Pegguy Arphexad had long moved on by then. He was released by Liverpool in the summer of 2003.

In goal against Cardiff was the waste of space otherwise known as Charles Hubert Itandje.

It certainly was. After getting a draw in Copenhagen two weeks earlier, we expected (and were expected) to win.

Norwegian Dan Eggen headed in a right-wing corner at the Anfield Road end to knock us out. We would come across Eggen again in happier circumstances. He was a member of the Alaves team that faced us in the 2001 UEFA cup final in Dortmund.

A sad exit from the competition we had won for the previous four seasons :(.

Joe Fagan left Kenny Dalglish out in favour of Michael Robinson, something he later admitted regretting.

A real roller-coaster ride and one of the best European matches ever seen at Anfield. We were 0-2 and 2-3 down on the night but somehow recovered to win 8-4 on aggregate.

1976 Aston Villa (Division One) Anfield 3-0
Ian Callaghan 76' Terry McDermott 80' Kevin Keegan 86'
Att 51,751

Missed this yesterday. Think this was the first match I attended without 'adult supervision'.

Stood at the front of the Paddock and it was jam packed. Abiding memories of the day were of Emlyn Hughes getting caught dawdling on the ball while it was still 0-0 and the Villa player had a clear run on the Anny Rd end goal. Chance was missed but I remember the feeling of incredulity in the crowd that Hughes had made the mistake, a sign of how highly he was regarded I suppose.
Callaghan got a beauty at the Kop end to break the deadlock, smashing one into the top of the net from around the edge of the box.

Apart from the War's early months, our main scorer that day was to be associated with the match fixing scandal of 1915.
Frank Pragnam had a prolific ratio of goals per game during his time with Liverpool.
Details of the scandal are for another date ;)
