That Brondby game was dire. Think we had one disallowed after about two minutes then never looked like scoring again. It was off the back of a good run where we had stuck ten past City too. We randomly took a French Exchange student to this one, must have been him who jinxed us.

I don't think so but at the time it was his first away win for about 437 years or something

Only away win in the Premier League, Yes. But don't forget that the dear old face-rubber was also wesponsible for us defeating the might of Rabotnicki and Trabzonspor in Macedonia and Turkey in the Europa League.

Steve McManaman 28' Stig Inge Bjornebye 54' John Barnes 65' Robbie Fowler 70' 71' Patrik Berger 89'

A real roller-coaster ride and one of the best European matches ever seen at Anfield. We were 0-2 and 2-3 down on the night but somehow recovered to win 8-4 on aggregate.

Here is the action from an extraordinary evening http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYjwXpAiZhA

Hadn't realised Maxi's last minute winner was a year ago today. Was boss that, going mental at the reebok.

Think it was on this day we played Cardiff in the League Cup. Robbie Fowler returned and the ultimate non-game changing substitute Nabil El Zhar scored a great goal.

Was also the first time i'd been in the press box for a match at Anfield. Was called in last minute to do it and my ticket was wasted but it was a good night anyhow!

Dan Eggen got the goal for Brondby. He then played for Alaves against us in the 2001 UEFA Cup Final, only to be dragged off after about 20 minutes because we were 2 up and ripping them to pieces at the time.

Sion was an incredible game. They started like a house on fire and could have been 4 up inside 25 mins instead of just the 2 they scored. We were again facing elimination midway through the 2nd half when they led 3-2, only for Barnes to level straight away with a cheeky backheel I think. Two goals in a minute from Fowler made it safe before Berger gave the result a very flattering look with the last kick of the game. I remember their small band of fans brought cowbells with them which I could hear from my seat in row 25 of the Kop!! They also chanted Liverpool in response to the Kop chanting Sion which was a nice gesture.

If I may start the November 1st ball rolling then I'd like to recall a derby at Anfield in 1987 which we won 2-0 with goals from McMahon and Beardsley. This was perfect revenge for them knocking us out of the Littlewoods Cup the previous Wednesday thanks to Gary Stevens deflected shot (anyone else recall Graeme Sharp rounding Brucie at the Kop End that night then missing the open goal?). What really stands out though was a 1st half challenge between McMahon and Reid. Both went flying into the tackle at full pelt, the ball went up in the air, and both got up with a look on their face of 'his cards marked!!' When they turned round and saw each other they laughed about it and hugged each other. Imagine what would happen now with a full blooded challenge like that from 2 players, the ref would have the book out straight away.

12 months earlier on the same date we beat Norwich 6-2 thanks in no small part to a Paul Walsh hat-trick. A 3-0 CL win against Anderlect in 2005 was memorable for a fantastic Luis Garcia header.

1st November 1969 : Derby County 4 Liverpool 0 : Attendance 40,993

Even under Bill Shankly’s eternally optimistic spell as manager, we knew we would lose some matches but the number of teams that thrashed us during that period could probably be counted on the fingers of one hand. Brian Clough’s newly-promoted Rams were one of those teams on this day forty-two years ago. Shankly made only one change from the starting team that had faced Southampton seven days earlier, bringing in Roger Hunt who had scored twice as a substitute against the Saints.

We weren’t the only club to suffer at Derby’s hands. Tottenham had an even heavier defeat (5-0) when they went to the Baseball Ground, where Derby also beat defending champions Leeds United 4-1, Arsenal 3-2 and both Manchester United & Newcastle United 2-0. Derby won 15 of their twenty-one home First Division matches and finished in 4th place with 53 points, two points and one place above us.

I don’t know if our players were over-confident about playing a promoted club but we never got going on the day and were thoroughly beaten by a team that would beat us again at Anfield later in the season a week after our woeful and embarrassing F.A. cup defeat at Second Division Watford.

It was the first time we had conceded four or more goals in a match since losing 5-1 to Ajax in December 1966 and the first time we had conceded four in a League game since losing 4-0 at Chelsea in April 1965.

1st November 1977 : Middlesbrough 0 Liverpool 1 : Attendance 30,952

About 10 minutes after Terry McDermott’s long-range winning goal Joey Jones, who would have run through a brick wall in the Liverpool cause, decided that the best way of preserving our narrow lead was to head-butt Boro’ striker John Hickton. Hickton lost five teeth; Joey received a one-match ban.

David Fairclough made his senior club debut in this match.

1st November 1997 : Bolton Wanderers 1 Liverpool 1 : Attendance 25,000

We got off to a brilliant start with Leonhardsen setting up Fowler before a minute had been played. Robbie would take centre stage on this afternoon. He was put through one-on-one with Bolton ‘keeper Keith Branagan midway through the second half but failed to score the goal that would almost certainly have given Bolton too much to do to salvage anything from the match. A couple of minutes later Fowler flattened Per Frandsen and Dermott Gallagher, who let Jamie Pollock’s crude challenges go unpunished throughout the match, had no option but to send our No. 9 off.

1st November 1986 : Liverpool 6 Norwich City 2 : Attendance 36915

Three goals for Paul Walsh as Norwich concede six goals at Anfield in a League match for the second time, having previously lost 6-0 in February 1979. We had also thrashed them 5-0 in a home F.A. cup-tie in January 1986.

I was at that Everton game in 1987. It was my first sight of the new team that Kenny built and I wasn’t disappointed. The build up and finish to Beardsley’s goal was superb but the main thing I took away that day was the sheer size of the Kop and also the massive Crown Pains tin they had on the halfwayline before the game! I just remember being amazed to see Everton colours on the Kop and also people being passed down to the front and taken away by the St John’s Ambulance. I didn’t know what was going on to be honest. My Dad had tickets through his work that meant we got to go in the Trophy Room afterwards as well for some chicken drumsticks and other classic 80’s buffet fare – a perfect end to a great day.

Heggem scored a lovely individual gaol in the game against Bradfor, we’d fallen behind very early possibly through Dean ‘Alehouse’ Windass. Thankfully we recovered quickly. And that Spurs game from a few years ago was absolute robbery. I think we hit the bar about 3 times, we certainly had a ton of chances to kill the game off. Then Carra scored an OG late on before Pavlychenko tapped in a rebound deep into injury time. It was our first defeat of the season and a travesty.

Robbie's first goal of the season but it was only the fifth time he had started a match in 2000-01. This extra-time winner was his 151st senior club goal. He was unlucky not to score in normal time when a low drive hit the base of a post but bounced out. Emile Heskey can consider himself very unfortunate to have been sent off by referee Rob Harris right at the end of extra-time. There was some pushing and shoving between Heskey and Chelsea's Winston Bogarde but Harris could only find fault with what the Liverpool player was doing.

Nick,

Heggem only scored three times as a Liverpool player but two of them (this one against Bradford and one up at Middlesbrough on Boxing Day 1998) were pretty special. I found a clip of the Middlesbrough goal only a few days ago. I had not seen it since the day of the match. I think the goal against Bradford was pretty similar, wasn't it ?

And Yes, it was Dean Windass who scored for Bradford.

I can fully remember the Boro goal now but I think they were both similar. From memory (and probably not seen it since he scored it!) he jinked past a couple of defenders before tucking it away nicely. Felt so sorry for him with his dodgy hamstrings. He scored home and away against Middlesbrough in the 1998-99 season. The away game (on Boxing Day 1998) we have already mentioned; the match at Anfield (also a 3-1 win) was on Saturday the 6th of February 1999. Although I don't remember his goal in the Anfield match, it seems from a match-report I have found to have been a good one :

"In the 44th minute Redknapp's typically intelligent play on the edge of the area resulted in him playing in the overlapping full-back Bjornebye whose far post cross was volleyed in spectacularly by his Norwegian countryman Heggem."

The last of Vegard's 65 first-team appearances for Liverpool did indeed come in that 4-0 win at Derby in which Emile Heskey scored a hat-trick. Heggem started but was replaced by Danny Murphy in only the sixth minute, confirmation that he was breaking down it seemed almost every time he tried to make 'yet another comeback'.

Absolutely right. It was Matteo (Harkness was an unused substitute), reported by the Guardian thus :

"Middlesbrough's hopes of salvaging something from the game were increased slightly when Beck broke through but was tripped by Matteo and produced a theatrical flourish as he hit the ground, ensuring the Liverpool defender was handed a red card."

2000 Chelsea (Worthington Cup 3erd Round) Anfield 2-1
Danny Murphy 12' Robbie Fowler 104'
Att 29,370

Very eventful game Fowlers first goal of the season, Heskey
sent off, extra time, Zola scoring with a header for the Chelsea and a streaker (think it was the famous one) who just before the second half kicked off dribbled the football from the half way line to beat De Ghoy in front of the Kop.
It was my girlfriend's (now my wife)first match, remember her saying why was the balding player(Gary Mac) who came on as a sub not playing from the start as he was class.

the header that garcia scored in that anderlecht game is one of the best i've ever seen. he was outside the penalty area when he headed it.

and here it is ... at 4 minutes 11 seconds on this clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12hulV91a8I

But he wasn't outside the penalty-area when he headed the ball ... as the replay clearly shows at 4 minutes 19 seconds.

I watched that Spurs game in 2008 in a bar in Manchester. We fucking battered them for about 60 odd minutes. Should have been out of sight (sound familiar ?) Spurs seem to get confidence from our profligacy, and came into the game. Carragher got an og, and we became shit, and the inevitable happened in stoppage time.
The bar full of mancs went crazy, and it ruined my night out !!

Still can't believe we lost that game. Wonder how many 'drop Carra' threads there were on here after that og?

November 2nd takes me back to a 1-0 win v Leicester at Anfield in 1985. Nothing unusual in the fact that Ian Rush got a late winner, but their young keeper Ian Andrews was magnificent in that game making a string of top class saves.

Bruce Grobbelaar said afterwards "They love good goalkeepers here and he's won the hearts of all our spectators. He proved again that Leicester produce quality people in that position. He's in line with the greats like Gordon Banks and Peter Shilton." The most memorable save came when Jan Mølby's fierce free-kick was deflected. Although the ball barely left the ground, Andrews defied logic and the laws of physics by somehow flicking it over the bar. Big Jan commented simply "I could not believe it".

Sorry, day late. I had tickets to see Underworld in Brixton after this match and had arranged to meet mates in a pub south of the Thames & knew if I didn't get off sharpish it would take forever. I was therefore hanging around the exits ready to leg it and wondering how the hell we were only going to get a point from the game when Pavl...Pavyl...that Russian fella...scored. I never leave early but on this occasion I just turned and ran down the steps as soon as the goal went in. Made it straight onto a train at the overland station near WHL and so avoided the long walk down Seven Sisters and just sat there in disbelief shaking my head. The draws that killed us that season started coming not too long after and, though we won the next two, I think some of our confidence was dented. It somehow felt significant, even though it was relatively still early in season.

As for the gig? Rubbish. I like Underworld & had seen them absolutely rock the Roundhouse the previous year, but for some reason I just wasn't in the mood. Ruined my night out too Andy.
