Halfway season to go. interesting to look at 1H vs 2H history, really says we are the only team that has a chance to beat Chelsea to 1st.

After 19 games we now have more points than at any other halfway point in a 20 team league.

What astonishes me is that we only need to take 18 points from the second half of the season to better last year's total. Really an amazing improvement, especially considering our net spend.

Also says a lot about our last season, when we really under-performed. This is why Klopp said he believes in training and improvement than making a whole lot of ins and outs as you would believe was necessary from quite a few of those who thought the likes of Lallana, Lovren, Henderson, or even Firmino weren't good enough and we couldn't do without a lot of transfers. Klopp believed in our squad from day 1 and brought in a few interesting players to paper over little cracks in our game that already had a foundation built in, but without much co-ordination.

We only lost a lot of points towards the end of the season, when we decided Europa was our way to Champions League, that has to be factored in as well.

This season's our best ever points tally in the PL era for the first half of the season and third best of any half season (Second halves of 2013-14 and 2008-09 were better).

After 19 games or new yr turn. What is the highest points tally of all premier league seasons ?

I am wondering how mental the currant Chelsea 49 points is. Is it the most? They were mental in 04/05 too from memory

Cheers in advance

Thats some haul. A possible season total of over 100 points but still total points tells us they will drop points as do all thw other seasons.
Long way to go and they can be caught up.
Hopefully it starts tonight at spurs

This should put the disappointment of drawing at Sunderland in perspective for the doom and gloom merchants - only four times in our history have we had more points (based on 3 for a win) after 20 games! Courtesy of @cchappas on Twitter.

Yup, for PL, Chelsea 52 in 05/06 is the highest..

Next highest for half a season is 49 points: United 2H 08/09, Chelsea 2h 04/05, and Chelsea 1H this season.

48: Liverpool 2H 13/14

47: Chelsea 2H 07/08 & United 1H 06/07

46: Chelsea 1H 04/05; United 1H 12/13; United 1H03/04

Record PL point total was Chelsea 04/05 @ 95 when they went 46/49 1H/2H

Arsenal unbeaten season in 03/04 they went 45/45.

There have been only 6 PL seasons with 90 points or better: Chelsea 04/05 @ 95; United 93/94 @ 92; Chelsea 05/06 @ 91; United 99/00 @ 91; United 08/09 @ 90; Arsenal 03/04 @ 90

When you look at my season-to-go data above, these data points really point out how difficult it will be for anyone to overhaul Chelsea, unless Chelsea have a serious wobble in the second half of this season.

Hmmm is right. Though it must be positive if you syphon off the immediate disappointment at Sunderland.

Definitely, and most probably would have taken 10 points from those four games beforehand. Damn near perfection, ruined by a referee fuck up.

That is a fantastic return considering what we were up against in those fixtures. Everton and City - both highly intense games - and the 44 hour break between City and Sunderland game. Here , is what others faced during this period.

Spurs - Burney, Southampton, Watford , Chelsea
Chelsea - Crystal palace, Burnemouth, Stoke , Spurs
United - West Brom, Boro, Sunderland, West Ham
City - Arsenal, Hull, Liverpool , Burnley
Arsenal - City, West Brom, Crystal Palace , Bournemouth

Apart from us and City, all have had relatively easy sailing. End of the season, we might gain more points from this set of fixtures than what we have now.

That's kind of common sense isn't it?  Of course we're going to play better and have a better chance of winning the more rested we are.  The same will be of any team in the world.

think just shows that for European football next season we are gonna need a stronger squad as it seems we can't cope with a couple of games in a few days

Stronger squad or just more rotation with the squad that we have?

stronger/different as I don't think some of the current not first teasers suits the way Klopp wants to play

Top 6 matches left:

Chelsea: City (H) United (A)
Spurs: Ars (H) United (H)
City: LP (H) Ars (A) Chel (A) United (H)
Liverpool: City (A)
Arsenal: City (H) Sps (A) United (H)
United: Chel (H) Ars (A) Sps (A) City (A)

Arsenal & United have been poor against the Top 6 teams, and they both have tough schedules left (as do City)

Good for us if we can do the job against the bottom 6  :P

Pretty important for us as I think it'll be one of us, Utd, Arsenal for the 4th spot this year.  We need Utd and Arsenal to drop some points and with Arsenal going out of Europe this week the number of points they drop will probably be minimal with the exception of games against the top 6.  We really can't afford to drop any more points this year if we are going to get Champions League football next year.

Hi, long time lurker...first post  8)

I think this weekend could be pivotal in the race for Champions League spots.
Arsenal away to West Brom and Utd away to Boro.  Both tricky matches and not beyond the realms of possibility that we see 2 home wins.  IF, and it would be a big if, we can get a result at City, then follow this up with a win against Everton, we'd potentially be 11 points ahead of Arsenal and 12 ahead of Utd before they play again...and Arsenals next match?  Against City.
