Bizarrely reminded of a young Michael Schumacher in that interview.

Spoke very well for a young man.

Let's hope he's the player we need.

he looks a bit like a German who has had the sunbed all summer, got that uber confident posture.

Hope he does awesome for us, I would have liked a more proven right back considering Johnsons huge dip in performances, and the fact flannagan hasn't played at right back in a year now, and now we have an unproven young player. But hopefully he makes the step up.

Nice little piece of business this...

And I have to say, it is really great to avoid going to the STF too often, not really following any rumours, except when they occassionally pop up on the Facebook-feed. It makes the summer so much more relaxing and it makes visiting the Liverpool-forum so much better, if you're surprised with a new signing... :)

As I've made clear in the other thread, I rate this lad so highly. Really pleased and surprised that we've been able to get him out of Madrid, regardless of the type of deal. Excellent work by the club. Top prospect this one.

Smaller data sample sizes, but you can clearly see why we wanted him - 2 areas we had to improve, 1) Stopping crossed, 2) better in 1 v 1 situations.

I would hazard a guess Moreno's stats are similar.

Andy Hunter in the Guardian:

Seems like Atletico pay us a fee if they recall him next summer.

Andy is the only person I have seen say this.

Didn't the Liverpool Echo say we can buy him next season?

Well that certainly puts it in black and white doesn't it!

Looking forward to not having to watch on as our fullbacks helplessly allow cross after cross to get floated into the box (as was the case vs United on Monday night). Everyone including myself have had a go at Mignolet's and the Cb's lack of commanding the box on crosses, but getting better and more aggressive fullbacks to stop crosses really tackles that issue at its source (literally).

Btw, I'd be interested to see how Manquillo stacks up against his fellow AM defenders too, because I'm sure they've all got pretty impressive numbers here because of the tight defensive system AM play under Simeone that makes it hard for players to dribble past people (as they're often doubled up on the wings).

I'd love to know what Rodgers' plan is for this guy, because on the face of it this is a very strange signing.  Perhaps we literally just want cover, and we're not too fussed if he signs permanently.

Yeah, just seems a weird thing for a club like ours to do.  I imagine we're still heavily scouting right-backs.

Steve Nicol criticises Manquillo loan.

Speaking on Extra Time, Nicol said: "It is a strange one. The guy hasn't played. He didn't play in the Atleti B team either, so this guy doesn’t have a lot of minutes behind him.

"I'm really not sure where the connection comes from and I'm certainly not sure scouts have seen him play because the guy hasn't played. I'm a little sceptical. Hopefully, it turns out, but it's a little strange."

"As a player, being loaned out is a bit of a slight on you," he said. "I don't see players having loyalty to the teams they are with because they are owned by another side.

"What if this guy sits on the bench for Liverpool? How happy is he going to be? Not only is he on loan, but he is not playing.

"I don't understand why a team of Liverpool's size are doing that."

Yip- stop those crosses and I'm sure our CBs would all of a sudden look like world-beaters again.
Well- not world-beaters, but they've been made to look like amateurs and are the laughing stock of the league due to this alone.

Steve Nicol living up to his tag of being one of the thickest players to have played for the club.

'I'm certainly not sure the scouts have seen him play'.

Anynway welcome Manquillo, very exciting signing.

If you have a centre back like Sami who is imperious in the air then by all means allow crosses to come in all day long. If you have a centre back like Skrtel who has a head like a sheriff's badge then you have to stop crosses coming in at all costs.

Pretty dreadful but his interceptions stats are very impressive which suggest he stops the ball even reaching the attacker to cross in the first place.

You got the number for his blocked crosses? Can't seem to find that stat on Whoscored or Squawka.

Interesting that Skrtel has such a high Crosses Blocked stat. I wonder: does that mean he spends a lot more time than you'd expect out on the wing covering Johnson, or that he's simply really good at blocking crosses?

Probably a bit of both to be honest. How many times have you looked down our right side and thought, "Where the fuck is Johnson?" and you will see he is in the opponent's half jogging back not looking arsed. This is usually preceded by him losing the ball.

To be fair, the whole point in having mobile CMs is they cover the gaps the fullbacks leaves. See Argentina at the World Cup.

It's clearly an important reason why we went for him.

If a cross gets blocked you stop a goal scoring attempt, it's one of the major factors why our defense was shocking last season, we let so many balls get into the box, then the benny hill scramble that ensued usually ended up in a goal. Stop the source stop the threat.

A defender who is good at 1 v 1 (this is the type of player Rodgers wants) should have very low dribbled past, very high interceptions, very high crosses blocked - means a front foot aggressive player.. Exactly what we have lacked for years.

I think Rodgers sees this kid as a spanish Zabaleta. The reason I say this is because Zabaleta is very good defensively and he also bombs forward with his overlaps which contributed to a lot of City goals. You don't see Zabaleta beating or trying to beat 1-2 players like Johnson does, but he has a higher number of assists and goals than him. That is because he just gives and runs into the space available rather than what Johnson does which is BEAT the person and run into the space available.

So as Manquillo's main assets are pace and defensively sound, I expect (once settled) similar performances.
