There is no way Flanagan is first choice ahead of Johnson. A couple of good games and 1 goal against Spurs doesn't change that.

Do you not believe that when a player has been performing consistently 2/3 levels below his potential and looking like he belongs in a relegation team for nearly 12 months, he should be dropped at least temporarily? If not in a situation like this, then when ever will youngsters get promoted and be given a proper run of games?

Anyway this is the Sakho thread so let's not continue this here.

True but even a '2/3 levels below his best' Johnson is better than Flanagam

Alright, if that's how you see it. Let's avoid contaminating the Sakho thread with a separate debate.

Johnson is a fine full back on his day, but he's no Lahm. 2/3 levels below his best, he's most certainly not better than Flanagan.

Given the way Johnson has played for the last 2 months, I'd say it changes 'that' quite drastically.

Anyway, I'd say Brendan is resting him for the Derby and doesn't want to risk rushing him back in. That decision, if it were true, may have gone against us today.

In any case, I can't wait to have the lad back.

Knowing our luck, he'll get subbed out and then reinjured.

8 days till the Derby, any chance we'll see him back for that?

We look soft as shite when he's not playing, would be nice if he can stay fit all season now. I don't know the stats but is he out most effective defender?

Can't see us winning the Derby if he's out. The only defender in our squad that can keep Lukaku out IMO.

Lukaku will have a field day with a CB pairing of Skrtel and Toure. I'd much rather try Kelly at CB than Toure against Everton.

Really? Replace the player who is constantly tasked with marking the opponent's big man, and has most often done a fine job? For a young player returning from injury that has played in 6 games since September 2012 - never in that position?

But yes, I wish Sakho would be able to play as well. But to replace Toure with Kelly? Ehh No.

Is it possible that Brendan is playing it down with Sakho and Allen, and purposely didn't put them on the bench Saturday to shock Everton on Tuesday when they both line up?

Probably clutching at straws though...

For all of his aggression and prowess in the air, we've really missed his passes out from the back. Neiter Skrtel nor Toure does that.

his actual aerial challanges won stats aren't that great, I think sktrel and agger where ahead of him, but yer I agree, also he seems to be criminally underrated by oppo supporters, possibly because he can look so clumsy despite being our best and most assured defender by far

The Johnson who is currently playing is far worse than the Flanagan of this season before his injury.

Doesnt apply this season, sorry.

I don't know what his 'best' is, but he hasn't been anywhere close to it for the last couple of seasons, injuries notwithstanding.

On current form, Flanno is far better than Johnson and I mean the 'far' part. Better defensively, keeps the ball going forward, participates in our approach play and shows some good intelligence and awareness. The only slight flaw has been his rash tackling.

With respect, that is the strangest and most suicidal idea I have read for a while on this board. Kelly hasn't played as CB for a long time - let alone in a crunch game like that and against such a formidable opponent as Lukaku. Secondly Kelly has not been the same player since his last injury.

I sincerely hope you are joking. Kelly at his best would do a good job against a speedy centre forward, but he hasn't shown any signs that he is close to that level or indeed will ever reach that level since he has returned from injury. I think Toure and Skrtel will rather relish playing against Lukaku. They are the 2 most physical CBs we have in the squad. I would worry a lot more about them if it was someone like Aguero turning them inside out.

To be fair to indian red, i can see why he is so worried at toure playing  centre back v them, but almost certainly  kelly would do  even worse! no way could we risk kelly, got a  feeling the bitters will score 2 minimum, but thats not to say we wont get 3!

Toure has looked comfortable playing as the right sided CB this season, especially in the games where he's been paired with Agger. That hasn't happened that many times this season though since Skrtel has been rocksolid for the most part. Toure on the left is another matter though.

Hopefully we see a Skrtel-Sakho partnership tomorrow.
