They wore the jersey..they could have been legend..
« on: February 22, 2012, 10:10:50 pm »
This is for the players that could have been greats but events conspired against them.

I'll go first.

Markus Babbel.

When we were shite average that guy shone, he was immense. But for illness he would have been a legend. And we took him to our heart.

Rob Jones

Possibly the best right back I saw at the club. Including Phil Neal. Once described by Ryan Giggs as the toughest opponent he faced, before injury curtailed him.

Who were possibly the great Reds that never made it..

We where far from average when we had Babbel, we did the treble and finished 3rd in his first season.

Torres. If a couple of  situations went the other way, he'd still be ours and still be the best striker in the league.

Rob Jones is an excellent shout. What a brilliant defender he was and what a shame about the injuries.

In recent times I' d say Xabi Alonso, Torres and Owen. Danny Murphy at a push?

Alonso won the CL + FA Cup, i think he is a small legend already..

agree with Torres, he could have been a legend.

Sure Ged won us a few pots, I had high hopes, we all did,  but back then we were average.

If my assistant had not signalled a goal, I would have given a penalty and sent off goalkeeper Patr Cheh. he beeped me to signal the foul. The noise from the crowd  stopped me hearing it, I have been involved at places like Barcelona, Ibrox, Old Trafford, Arsenal, but I've never in my life been involved in such an atmosphere. IT WAS INCREDIBLE

I'd add Jari Litmanen. He was a truly world class player when we signed him, but hardly played the guy. He had a great football brain, superb touch and personified pass and move. I watched him play against Villa away and he was magnificent playing in a three with Gerrard and Smicer.

Just to put a twist on it. Although he was a legend in his 9 years here, I'd throw in Craig Johnston.

Retiring at the age of 28 to look after his ill sister.

Yes, he did it all, but he also could of done a lot more.

1. Don't call them pots as if they were mere distractions
2. The sheer number of games in 00/01 proved that we were more than just an average team papering over cracks - you can't play 60+ matches and still keep going in the 120th minute in a mtach in May.
3. Don't ruin an interesting premise of a thread with a veiled attack on Ged's achievements

If Owen had retired injured in 2004 he would be regarded as a legend. It's what he did after he left that has damaged his legacy. In truth he was a sensational player for us - his loss...

Kevin Sheedy.  Didn't really do it for us, and had to mave to Everton to get a regular shirt.

That said, who was he going to oust, in what was arguably the best midfield in England, Europe, and arguably the world, at that time.

It still upsets me to think how magical Torres/Suarez partnership would have been.

Watching the Premier league years from 2006 seeing all his goals and watching his goals in the CL, he had everything. EVERYTHING

Without doubt the biggest mistake of the lads career, and the biggest loss of a 'potential legend' for us.
We’ll still finish in top four - and they won’t. You can quote me on this in May.

Isn't that the point of the thread? Players who are not legends but given a different set of circumstances may have achieved far more at the club and them possibly become legends.

how many players that play for a club actually go on to be "legends" though a few players on this where decent enough players does it matter that they didn't become legends

I started the thread. I belittle no-one.

Its more about who could have been legend but events of the time prevented them?

Let me try again..Wayne Harrison

When we bought this kid, it was unique for Liverpool.  We didnt spend that much. He was a fortune.
