If we sort the deliveries out then this lad will score a good few goals with his head.

Very good debut.

Looks rock solid, and Lovren seems more calm next to him as well, very encouraging signs so far.

Really impressive league debut against one of the leagues best strikers. The word to describe him as above is classy- read the game well, good on the ball and not afraid to do the dirty. My biggest hope is that both him and Lovren can play a good run of games together with Clyne and whoever is leftback- we need to get some consistency and a solid unit with good understanding.

Good debut. He'll get better the more he goes to the gym. Which he's already doing so good work.

Excellent debut - quite excited about this lad, looks like a proper centre back really command his space - will have to wait of course across the season to see more about how he deals with the variety of challenges the premier league throws at him, but he looked very encouraging today and handled himself very well.

Could be signing of the season.

Didn't look weak either, which I know is something he brought up at one point. Kane is a pretty strong forward who likes to be physical and had no issues dealing with him when he needed to!

Yep. Him and Lovren bullied Kane to the bench. Very encouraging, other than a few dumb free kicks by Dejan it was an excellent display and they didnt get a sniff.

I like his style and he's good in the air too which is a breath of fresh air. Those long balls have always been a worry for us as we always had one center back who was bad at them. With Lovren and Matip I'm more confident with our ability to deal with them.

Just goes to show how hard it is spending money on centrebacks.

There's no chance you can get the equivalent talent 25 year old forward on a free transfer.

Looks great. His positioning & general calmness is just what we needed at CB. Big upgrade.

Once Milner has a better concept of the LB position or we sign one have a solid looking back four.

Looked very good, calm, read things well, and brought the ball out very steadily. Played a couple of long passes that weren't so far away too, but when our forwards come to expect them, they could damage a couple of opponents.

Very good game, we need some stability in this position, been a while since you could pinpoint a player as a our best centre-back. Hopefully this is the man to do it over a season. Mane has certainly stepped up, if Matip and Karius improve the first team as much we'll be laughing.

His reading of game is really impressive and how good he is at ball at his feet. He looked very Solid defensively. In midweek game I liked how he was instructing Can in midfield to take proper position. Looks like he can be the talking on organizing defense. At last we have CBs who can head the ball decently. Add Karius to this side (though Mings doing good so far but I think Karius can bring that more commanding display to box) and we look to have very solid defense against balls in box which was our main weakness against physical teams. Long may it continue.... Looks a real bargain on free.

Exactly what I was thinking. Let's not forget we were playing one of the top teams in the league from last season, at their gaff, and he was absolutely mint. What struck me the most was that when I was watching him on the ball or getting stuck in, I didn't have this overwhelming feeling of dread that he was going to do something fucking stupid. There was a zen-like calm and control about his playing. He's gonna be tough to shift out of the starting line up.

If he's doing that after one game, god only knows how good he could be later in the season. The Agger and (cough) Ferdinand comparisons are entirely justified, we might just have a good one on our hands here.

I thought he was really good in a tough match. I like his ranging runs deep into the opposition territory. He seems able to choose just the right time, and has great ball control so one doesn't get that sick feeling in the pit of the stomach that we are going to lose the ball with everyone out of position.

Does anyone else feel much more relaxed now when we concede corners? Matip and Lovren seem to be so much more solid in the air, perhaps just by having some dominating height for once.

So far, so good. Looks like a great addition to our team.

Not getting carried away as in the PL there's all types of tests that awaits but he's settled in pretty well pretty quickly.

Could turn out to be the best free signing we've ever made.
